Finally. It was finally happening. My emotions refused to accept the reality of what was occurring. It felt just like a beautiful dream. I’d known all along that I wanted this to happen, but I had denied myself simply because I was afraid of him. I thought he hated me. But I was wrong. My heart galloped within my chest as I waited for him to speak.
“Hero, I…”
I was buzzing with anticipation. The excitement was almost overwhelming. I waited.
“I…” he tried to say something, and apparently failed, before sighing “Hero, I can’t tell you here. I want to take you someplace better.”
He took my hand and lead me outside through the back door. Once outside, we climbed down to the beach, and he then took me to the farmost corner where I saw a small cave hidden within the rock face, barely noticeable from where we were standing. We climbed to it and sat inside. The view of the ocean from the cave was the most stunning and breathtaking one I had yet seen. The black sky was glittered with thousands of stars casting a glowing reflection down onto the calmness of the water. Gentle waves slowly consumed the soft sand before disappearing again into a cluster of decorative foam. A single bird was singing not too far away. It was perfect.
“This is amazing!” I gasped, gazing up at the bright stars which were scattered across my line of vision “How did you find this place?”
“I just came across it on a walk one day.” Rocket shrugged.
“It’s so beautiful.” I whispered.
“I’m going to finish off what I wanted to say before now.” Rocket announced. I turned to face him, and waited intently. He leaned towards me and planted a soft kiss on my lips.
“Hero, I love you.”
My happiness at that point was completely overpowering. All my sensations seemed to dance and buzz with pure exhilaration. I thought for a brief moment that I might faint, but I soon managed to overcome that. But at the same time, it felt very strange. It was an alien kind of feeling, experiencing this much affection for the boy who had pretty much denied my existence for the past four years. And seeing him being so open and honest like this almost made it seem as if he had transformed into a completely different person. I was highly content with this, nonetheless.
“Rocket…” I had to force out the words which were apparently being trapped inside my mouth by my unsteady nerves, and when I did manage to speak, my voice was a mere strained whisper, “I…I love you too.” I finally managed to say it.
“Every person I met since my parents died gave up on me pretty quickly…” he muttered “I was adopted by at least two other families before you guys came along, and they just couldn’t put up with me. But you kept trying. No matter how much trouble I caused…no matter how callous I was to everyone…no matter how many times I insulted you or anyone else, or broke anything, or hurt anyone, you guys just brushed it to one side and acted like it never happened. I have to say, I’m very impressed.”
“You worried us.” I admitted “You were so anti-social and quiet, yet you always seemed adamant on breaking some kind of rule or offending someone. We knew that this type of behaviour wasn’t normal for a boy your age, so we really wanted to help you.”
“I probably owe you about a million apologies…” Rocket muttered regretfully.
“Don’t bother.” I smiled “You’re forgiven for every single one of them.”
“Thanks.” a smile spread across his beautiful lips “But can I just ask you to be really, really, really careful? Please?”
“Why?”
