The 5 of us gathered in the sitting room to listen to what Lisa had to say. Michel sat next to me and placed an arm around my shoulder to calm me down. I could see my father watching us through narrowed eyes but I couldn't bring myself to care. Jack was sitting as far away from us as possible and Lisa remained standing behind the sofa.
"Your father and I did have a relationship and we were in love. The morning before he left, we had a huge fight and...I'm the one that told him to leave. It wasn't the other way around," she said as she looked between Jack and me. I looked at my father who couldn't meet my eye.
"I'm sorry Emma, I should have told you but I was scared that you would leave and I would lose you too. You were the inly person I had left. That summer when I met Lisa, your mother and I were barely speaking to each other. I was so young and angry and," his voice trailed of as he looked at me. I knew that it had been a mistake but that still didn't excuse what he had done but I also knew that I wasn't the one who needed an apology. I'd gotten the answers I needed but his apology had to go to someone else.
"I'll forgive you if you come with me to see mother," I said in a low voice. He looked up in surprise but there was also a small bit of hope. I realized with a jolt that he still loved her, even after these past 2 years.
"Of course I'll come," he said.
In the end, Michel, Father and I had decided to go visit mother. Lisa had chosen to stay home and Jack stayed behind with her. I still couldn't believe he was my brother. Over these past few weeks, we had shared that kind of relationship but the feeling that we both actually shared blood was still shocking.
"Did you know that Lisa was pregnant when you left," asked Michel. I looked up to my father who had buried his head in his hands.
"No, I would have stayed and made sure she was taken care of before leaving." Michel nodded and turned away as the rest of the ride passed in silence.
Despite the lack of conversation, we seemed to reach my mother's house in just 15 minutes. Her house was huge with an equally big garden and tall pillars on both sides. There was a beautiful fountain at the center of the garden and it was tree-lined on both sides. Michel walked in front while my father and I trailed behind at a much slower pace. No matter how slow I walked, I made it there nevertheless. The initial excitement I'd had of seeing of my mother came and my heart started to beat faster. Michel looked at me once and I nodded before he rang the doorbell. I held my breath as the door swung open. On the threshold was my mother, looking exactly as she had been when she'd left.
