The seven boys are at the local park. Yoongi and Hoseok have just started walking around the track, Jimin heading towards the couple to walk alongside them; Taehyung, disheartened at being left by himself, joins Namjoon by renting a bike of his own and joining him by riding them around the various bike paths in the park; Seokjin and Jungkook are heading towards a bench underneath a tree, the elder's hands hidden in his pockets.
"So what's the surprise?" Jungkook asks eagerly as they sit down.
Seokjin pulls out a small bottle, smiling widely. "I'm guessing you know what—"
"Bubbles?" A grin spreads across Jungkook's face.
"I thought you'd like them," Seokjin laughs, handing the bottle to the younger. "Here."
The sun is setting, a gentle breeze flowing through Jungkook's hair as he unscrews the cap, grinning widely when he pulls out the wand. He huffs, and a few bubbles come out. Seokjin pops them with a laugh, the sunlight hitting one side of his face.
Jungkook isn't paying any attention to Seokjin anymore, his attention fixated on getting as many bubbles out with a minimal amount of solution. He is aware, in the back of his mind, of Seokjin's giggles, which honestly sound like the most beautiful noise ever, but none of that is important when compared to bubbles.
A particularly loud laugh reaches Jungkook's ears a few minutes later, and he glances up to see Seokjin; the elder male is reaching up to pop some of the bubbles that have gone too high up, his long fingers stretching out, and with a brush from his fingertips, the bubble pops, vanishing into nothing. The golden rays of the setting sun illuminate his hair, making the normally brown strands look blonde. A smile involuntarily makes its way across Jungkook's face as the two meet eyes.
"What are you smiling at?" Seokjin asks, leaning over and mussing Jungkook's hair. "Me?"
"No," Jungkook giggles breathlessly, blowing more air through the bubble wand to mask his sudden embarrassment.
And when Seokjin slides over, his hand running through Jungkook's silky locks and coming to a rest at the back of his neck, Jungkook can't help but wrap his arms around Seokjin's waist and hold him close, resting his head on the elder's shoulder and prompting a laugh from Seokjin. "What's with the sudden affection?" he asks softly, warm breath hitting Jungkook's temple.
"I don't know," Jungkook admits shyly, a bashful smile inching across his face. "I just felt like it."
"You felt like it?" asks Seokjin, voice turning into a giggle at the end. "Well, what if I just felt like doing this?" He leans down and pecks Jungkook's cheek, pinching the younger boy's nose as he pulls away.
"Hyung," Jungkook complains, pushing Seokjin away as his heart clenches, "what was that for?"
"I felt like it," Seokjin echoes the younger's previous statement, retracting his arms and sitting up straight. Jungkook takes the hint and sits up as well, eyes darting up when he hears a yell of "Seokjin hyung!"
Namjoon is running towards them, phone in his hand and a bright smile on his face. "Hyung, I got it!"
"Really?" Seokjin stands up. "You actually—?"
"Yes!" Namjoon wraps his arms around the elder, his entire face illuminated by his smile. "I finally got it!"
"Got what?" Jungkook queries, rising to his feet.
"I got a record deal!"
The teenager's eyebrows shoot up into his hair. "A record deal?"
"Yes!" Namjoon exclaims, eyes crinkling up into crescents as his lips upturn. "I got signed onto a company, and I'll make music, and—" He exhales gleefully. "I need to tell Hoseok and Yoongi hyung, see you later." He sprints off in the direction of the track, shirt flapping wildly in the wind behind him.
"That's awesome," Jungkook breathes, sitting back down. "When Namjoon hyung gets famous, I can tell people that I'm friends with a celebrity."
Seokjin snorts, flicking Jungkook's temple, eliciting a hiss of pain ("ow, hyung!") from the younger. "You're so stupid."
"I'm not."
"Only stupid people would say that." When Jungkook pouts, Seokjin lips upturn in amusement. "Okay, fine," he relents, "I guess you're not that stupid." Jungkook only shakes his head and turns away, making Seokjin laugh again. "Okay, okay, sorry, you're not stupid. Happy?"
"Yeah."
"God, Jungkookie, you're so cute." He exhales in content before something flickers in his eyes and his grin fades slightly and he sighs again, this time in disappointment. "Hey, Jungkook?"
The boy turns his head to look at the elder, an uneasy feeling settling in his gut. "Hm?"
"So you know how I'm head chef at my restaurant?"
"Yeah."
"So basically," Seokjin takes a deep breath, "I'm going to be a guest judge on this cooking competition." He wets his lips and continues, "I'll be gone for a week for that, and then I'll be at my parents' for another week. So, I won't be around here for two weeks."
"Two weeks...?" Jungkook echoes, feeling as though the wind has been knocked out of his lungs. What is he going to do for two whole weeks without Seokjin?
"Don't worry," the elder says hastily, giving Jungkook's shoulder a gentle squeeze, "we can still text each other and stuff."
"Yeah, but— two weeks..."
"I was kind of worried about telling you," Seokjin admits quietly, "since we hang out so much. I don't even meet up with Namjoon as much as I do with you, and I've known that kid for years." A nervous laugh comes forth his lips. "We can text each other everyday, and— and maybe even FaceTime if the wifi is good enough. I— I wouldn't bet on that, though," he adds anxiously.
"It's fine," Jungkook says lowly, brows knitting together. "I'll be fine."
I can handle myself when Seokjin hyung's not around. I was totally okay before I met him.
And as Seokjin slips their fingers together, Jungkook realizes, with a bittersweet ache in his chest that simultaneously terrifies and excites him, that he might be in love with Kim Seokjin.
