Teenage Dirtbags

Here's a poem that I wrote in my English class, for a competition, but I didn't win, so I thought I'd share it with you.

You spend your whole time as a child waiting for your teenage years

They always say that your teenage years are the best one’s you’ll ever have!

They’re lying.

The struggle to become your own person overtakes your life

Wanting to express yourself through your bewildered appearance

Restrictions being thrown you like daggers, every time you seem to find pleasure in things

Lying awake at night on your soggy pillows, pondering where those days had gone

Those days...where everything was sweet, and the only problems you had we’re quickly fixed by your parents.

You longed for those days of innocence.

Once simple relationships become complicated

Your mind is now a mind of its own

Your parents aren’t cool any more. You don’t plead for their attention any more.

No, you shut them out. You slam your door.

Friends become people you think twice about

They aren’t just those people you play with any more

They could hurt you... if you let them.

It’s your choice. It’s your life.

Live it!
