05) I'd really love some advice from you or just to get some stuff off my chest..

My friend told a teacher about self-harming who then spoke to me and then my parents, who made me see a doctor, who had referred me to a specialist. The thing is, the school is giving me counselling after the Christmas holidays and I'd rather that, but I dunno how to tell my parents that when I wasn't ready for anyone to know:/

Also, any things I could try to distract me when I get the urge to cut?? I've tried phoning a friend and the elastic band, they only work for a while... Sorry this is so long but thank you so much if you answer, as it would really help me out, UK 13, nearly 14 btw if that makes a difference x x x x

Firstly, I'm awfully sorry that you've had to go through all of this.

The thing is, the fact that you're getting help is extremely brave of you, and since it's your road to recovery, you have to do what you think is right for you. If you'd rather see the school counsellor, then you have to be straight-forward, and tell the truth.

Chances are, your parent's will want you to be happy, and they'll want what's best for you.

Maybe tell them that you at least want to try it out with the school, and if it doesn't work, you'll see the specialist - compromise.

Sit them down, and say something like, "Mum, Dad, I know that you want me to see a specialist, but school has offered for me to see one there, and I think I'd feel a little more comfortable seeing a counsellor at school. Could I at least try it out, and If it doesn't work, I'll see the specialist?"

Now for things that you can do instead of cutting:

Hide everything that temps you to self harm, and keep them out of reach.

Exercise. Seriously, exercising not only is good for your health, but It can be a great stress reliever, and can make you feel tons better.

Try cold showering. It's really difficult to do, but when you have urges to cut, just get into the shower and make sure that the water's cold. It usually works :3

Try writing, or singing a song. I like to go into my bedroom, and turn up the music as loud as I can, when I feel like cutting. Then I'll just sing, until I start crying, and it sometimes makes me feel a little better.

If none of these work, then maybe try self harming with something less dangerous, like a pen. I sometimes jab myself with a pen, until I've calmed down a little. It's better than using scissors, knifes, pins, razors, ect. :3

It is possible, to stop self harming, even if it doesn't seem like it. I've gone two weeks without cutting so far, and I'm hoping that I don't do it before the New year.

You have to be determined, and you have to want to get better. The fact that you're getting help though, shows that you're doing the right thing.

I wish you all the best; good luck!
