*Mitch’s POV*

I swaggered into school.  I was instantly surrounded by, well, everybody.  Being the most popular at school came with a price.  You couldn’t go anywhere without having someone with you.  And I loved every minute of it.  I always had some nerd doing my work for me in some hope I would give them my time, I always had some girl wanting to be with me.  I walked up the corridor to my locked with the mob of people behind me.  Standing outside my locker were two of the people I trusted the most.  Sky and Bodil stood, laughing at the crowd of people behind me.

“Really Mitch?  It’s only the first day of school for Notch’s sake!” Bodil said in his Bulgarian accent.  I laughed at him.

“Hey I don’t control the school.  I don’t encourage them” I said back to him, flicking my brown hair out of my golden eyes as I did.  I heard a girl sigh and smiled.

“Yes but you don’t exactly discourage them either do you” I hit Adam over the head laughing.

“So, what do we have first?” I asked for no one in particular.  A voice in the mob shouted:

“You have Maths Mitch!”  I smiled into the direction I think the voice came from.

“Well, lezzgo!” I shouted, draping my arms over the shoulders of Adam and Bodil and walking to Maths class.  The mob followed us, picking up a few stray people on the way. When we got to the door of Maths there was a bit of a scuffle as everyone who actually had maths with me had to get to the door and everyone who didn’t just stood there.

“Right guys if you don’t have maths with me then just piss off” I said, not so kindly.  They followed my instructions and scarpered.  I knew they would be back by first break.  I walked into the classroom, picking all the seats at the back for me and my friends.  I had heard that all of my other friends would be joining me, Sky and Bodil.  I heard a loud bang as the door swung open.  I knew who it was before I looked up.

“Bajjjjjjaaaaaaannnnnn!”  I heard a voice yell.

“Tyyyyyyyyyyyy!”  I yelled right back.  Behind him I saw Jason and Matt.  This year was going to be great. “Guyss I haven’t seen you for ageeeeeeeeees!” I yelled at them pulling them all into a group hug.  They laughed and sat in the spare chairs I had saved for them.

“Hey Mitch did you hear the news?” Matt asked me.

“Nahh, what news?” I said.  I had been in another part of Minecraftia for summer vacation.

“They’re letting 3 hybrids into this school.  Hybrids for Notch’s sake.  They have to move down a year though, because they’re not smart enough, so they’re in our classes.  One’s in this one actually” I was shocked at Matt’s words.  Not because Hybrids were coming into this school, but by the harshness in Matt’s words.  He sounded like he hated them.  Yes I didn’t like them and maybe they shouldn’t be here but I didn’t hate them.

“Really?”  Sky asked him, he nodded back.  Everyone’s eyes widened, and I mean everyone.  The whole class listened in to our conversation.  They always did.  My fault probably, the perks of being popular.

“Yep.  They don’t belong here.  They’re worse than animals.” Matt continued.  This comment drew a few nervous laughs, but most people looked at me to see how I would respond.  I just widened my eyes slightly, shocked again at Matt’s words.  Most people did the same.  I sighed.  I wonder what it would be like to not have everyone copying every damn thing you do.

My thoughts were interrupted as the door banged open one more time.  This time it wasn’t a student though, it was a teacher.

“Everyone settle down.  TY sit down.  SKY stop throwing paper at Ty.  Thank you. MITCHELL stop talking.”  When she had finally got us to shut up and sit down she relaxed.  “Thank you.  Today we have to welcome a...special...person into this class.  Now he’s a Hybrid and I will not tolerate any bullying.  Everyone please meet Jerome” There was an audible gasp as a huge furry creature walked into the room.  Under the matted fur I saw two chocolate brown eyes looking around in fear.  I felt pity bubble down in the pit of my stomach but pushed the feeling away.  I wasn’t going to feel pity for this creature.  “Mitchell” The teacher’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

“Yes Miss?” I sighed.

“You will be taking care of Jerome for the week as you both have the same timetable, so Bodil could you come sit here at the front and let Jerome sit next to Mitchell?” I gaped at her.  I had to look after this thing? Brilliant just brilliant.  I didn’t look at him as he sat down next to me, after a bit of a huff from Bodil.

“So I guess I’m looking after you for the week.” I whispered to him as Miss started teaching some kind of equation.  Something like speed = distance/time.  I wasn’t concentrating.  I was just trying to make it less awkward between me and...Jerome did Miss say?  He just nodded, not looking at me.  I sighed and tried to make conversation again. “So...what Hybrid are you?” He mumbled something. “What?”

“A Bacca” I gasped.  They were meant to be next to extinct.  They were also meant to be really dangerous.

“So...I’m Mitchell but everyone calls me Mitch” I said, deciding to introduce him to everyone. “This is Sky, Jason, Ty, Matt and that guy who was sat where you are is Bodil.  Guys this is Jerome and we are going to be nice to him, okay?” I said, glaring at Matt as I did.  He nodded quickly.  He knew better than to double cross me.  I could turn the whole school against him. “Good” I smiled at him and turned back to Jerome “Well, now you’ve met everyone.”

“Then who are all these people staring at you?” He asked me timidly.  I looked around and instantly wished I hadn’t.  The whole class was watching us, listening into our conversation.

“Yes?  What do you all want?” I asked them not too kindly.  They all quickly turned around.

“Are they all your friends as well?” Jerome asked me looking confused.

“No.  They wish they were but they’re not” I answered his question.  He just stared at me and we spent the rest of the lesson in an uncomfortable silence.  The bell went and I grabbed my stuff.

“Come on we have PE” I said to Jerome and walked off expecting him to follow.  He took too long and I got to the corridor before he left his seat.  I was instantly surrounded.  He came out of the classroom looking around for me, thinking I had left him.  I tried to call him but he didn’t here.  I sighed.  Time to use my popularity I guess.

“EVERYONE SHUDDAP” I screamed.  Everyone went still and looked at me.  “Thank you.  Jerome, let’s go to PE” He came to me, looking scared and we walked off.  After a second everyone followed whispering about me and Jerome.  I just ignored them.  After this week was over I would never talk to him again and my life would go back to normal.  I would never be friends with a Hybrid.
