*Jays POV*
4 days. 4 whole days since the boys left to go home. 4 days since it first started raining. 4 days that I stayed awake at night because I was petrified. 4 days that I had survived on drinking coffee and whatever food was left in the cabinets and fridge. 4 days I had been completely alone.
I was sprawled across my couch, watching some random program on the television when it happened. A loud boom of thunder shook the house and a particularly large strike of lightning cut across the sky, and just as it touched down, the power went out.
"Fucking hell! You have got to be fucking kidding me! No no no no! Why?!" I screamed out to no one in particular.
Did this really have to happen? And especially while it was evening time so I couldn't see anything in the apartment and I had no candles? I quickly unlocked my phone, checking the time and battery level. It was already 10 PM and I had 87% of battery left so I decided to just call it a night.
Changing into what I believed to be my pajamas, I slumped back into the bed. I just layed there, completely still, taking in the sound of the rain beating down on the rooftop. I was somewhat tired but sleep completely evaded me.
The lightning from outside illuminated the room, engulfing it in a odd blue color. I slipped out from underneath the covers and walked my way over to the window just to the left of my bed. I watched as the rain beat down on the pavement, the window pane, and anything else it could. As it did before, the rumble of thunder shook the house, sending a chill up my spine.
The lightning struck down with such a fierceness, it was stunning. No doubt, I was scared but something kept me drawn to the window. Maybe it was the way that something so beautiful could be so dangerous, or maybe it was the way that the lightning twisted and curled up into wicked designs as the rain poured down around it. It was simply captivating and apparently lulling because before I knew it I was walking towards my bed where I fell asleep instantly.

Sun streamed through the windows as I made my morning coffee. I suppose the lights came back on sometime during the night as I was sleeping because when I checked as soon as I got up everything was back to normal. I poured the beverage into the mug I had set out of the counter, careful not to burn myself with the hot liquid. I checked my phone for any messages as I retrieved the little bit of milk I had left in the fridge, only to have one from Becky wishing me a Happy Thanksgiving. I set the milk down on the counter and walked over to the back of the front door where I had a calendar tacked up. I stared at it, eyebrows scrunched together. It was already the 28th? I had seemed to be so caught up in being scared that I hadn't noticed what day it was. But then something dawned on me. November 28th. Oh no.
*Flash Back*
"What?!" I screamed down the receiver, possibly blowing out the person on the other lines eardrum, but I didn't care at all.
"Jayel, I'm going to need for you to calm down." The female officer, Officer Jeanty, spoke trying to calm me down but failing miserably.
"Calm down? Calm down?! My parents were murdered and you want me to calm down?!"
"Honey, I know it's alot to take in, but breathe. I can hear you starting to hyperventilate and we don't want that. We are trying to work on this case as soon as possible and find out who did it ok? All we know so far is that it happened this morning, November 28th at 9:04 AM. It appeared to be a gang affiliated crime. Are you there? Jayel? Jay-"
I hung up. This was way too much to take in. I sunk down to the floor and my sobs overpowered me. Why did this have to happen to my parents? All they did was go out on a walk and in return the were shot and killed in what had appeared to be a gang initiation thing.
I just sat on the floor of the house that my now dead parents and I lived in, and just cried. Alone.
*End Flash Back*
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. I had to remind myself to do this otherwise I would begin to hyperventilate as I had did this same day a year ago. It didn't even seem as it was just one year, it felt like 5 since I had last seen my parents, or my brothers for that matter. I truly did miss them, but what they did was the best for all of us in the end.
I guess I couldn't really be mad at them for putting me in an orphanage 8 months ago considering they couldn't support me. They all had their own kids and wives, so who was I to get in the way of that? Sure I was their little sister, but it wouldn't be fair and just plain wrong of me to bring them down financially. And looking on the bright side, if they hadn't I would've never met Becky or got this job.
Pushing away the negatives thoughts about my parents and brothers, I walked back over to where I had set the milk and my drink on the counter. I poured the milk in, taking a sip of the hot concoction. I smiled as the drink warmed up my whole body, something that always made me feel good. I walked over to the kitchen window, drink in hand, admiring the way that drops of rain dripped down off the windowsill. I sighed, knowing this was going to be a long day.
