I wake up startled, as someone nudges my shoulder, making me fall down to the ground. I blink a few times before looking up to see Finn glancing down at me. "Rise and shine, sleepyhead." He says, reaching his hand out in front of me. I take his hand as he pulls me up, and I dust off my pants looking around.
I noticed that it was a little later in the morning and I frown up at him. "Why didn't you wake me earlier?" I ask.
"I figured you needed the sleep, you were snoring quite loudly." He says jokingly.
"I do not snore." I say defensively. "Plus, I don't usually run off much sleep anyway." I finish.
"That's my point exactly, you needed the sleep." He says as I stand up. I look around to see that the tent had been packed up and everyone was sitting around the burnt out fire eating what I think was small red berries. "So, you and Clarke eh?" I say smirking slightly.
"Nope, not even going there with you." He says walking over to the others. "Aw, c'mon!" I yell after him but he ignores me. Rude.
I walk over to the rest of the group and fold my arms across my chest. "So when are we heading to Mount Weather?" I ask, looking over at Clarke.
"We leave now." She says standing up. The group follow her actions and we stand there waiting for Clarke to elaborate.
"We need to find a way to get across that river without getting mauled to death by that thing." She says, looking over at Octavia who gives her an awkward smile in return. "I have an idea on how to get across the river." I say, speaking up, "We make a rope out of all this vine and we tie it to a sturdy branch and swing over it."
"That's a genius idea." Monty says. "Let's get cracking."
***
We had made the rope, and it was pretty strong, so there wasn't much of a chance it would snap, now all we had to do was find a good enough tree to tie it around.
Finn and Clarke were the ones carrying the rope, while I was at the back of the group thinking of what we will do when we reach Mouth Weather. Jasper was walking in front of me next to Monty, and I can see the nasty purple bruising around his neck. I look to the ground at the same time Clarke speaks up.
"This looks like a good branch!" We look over towards Clarke who was currently lifting the rope up to Finn who had climbed the tree and was starting to tie it around the branch tightly. We all stand around the rope as Finn climbs down and holds it in his hands, pulling it to see if it would hold.
"You wanted to go first, so quit stalling." Clarke says with a smile. "Mount Weather awaits." I say after her.
"Just hang on till the apogee and you'll be fine." Jasper says to Finn. "Apogee, like the Indians right?" Finn replies with an amused smile, testing the rope again.
"Apogee not Apache." He says back.
"He knows. Today Finn." Clarke says impatiently.
"Aye, Aye, captain. See you on the other side." He says with a mock salute, pulling the rope backwards for better momentum. Just as he was about to jump, Jasper stops him. "Wait." He says, putting his hand on Finn's chest to keep him in place.
"What?" He replies. Jasper looks towards Octavia, who is looking right back with an expression I can't quite put my finger on. "Let me."
"Wait Jasper-" I say but Jasper cuts me off. "I can do it." He says nodding his head with a small smile. Finn hands him over the rope with a look of respect, while I stand there biting my lip with worry.
'Why am I worried?' I ask myself.
"Knew there was a badass in there somewhere." Finn says giving him a pat on the back. Jasper takes a few nervous deep breaths as Finn says a few things under his breath that I didn't quite catch. "See you on the other side." Jasper says to us all, grinning slightly.
We all let out a few chuckles as he pulls back the rope for a better swing, and jumps off the rocks. I hold my breath as he literally flies over the river, letting out a few Whoops, and cheers. When he reaches close to the end of the river, he lets go a little early for my liking. I bring my hand up to my face ready to hold in a yell, but he makes it over with no inches to spare. His legs skim the edge of the river and he goes crashing into the dirt face first.
He does a few rolls and we all rush to the edge of the rock to see if he's okay. Finn catches the rope as it swings back over to us. "Jasper you alright?" I yell across the river as he gets up stumbling forward. He had a huge grin plastered across his face and he throws up his arms while yelling, "We are Apogee!" We all burst out into cheers while at the same time, laughing like maniacs.
"You did it Jasper!" Clarke yells out, still cheering. Jasper does a funny happy dance while spinning around. We start laughing then Finn pulls Clarke towards him handing over the rope. "You're up Princess." He says grinning.
"Come on Clarke, you got this. Whoo apogee! " Jasper yells across the river in a sing-song voice. I look over towards Jasper once again as he bends over frowning and picks up what looks like an old metal sign. He holds it up above his head and I let out a huge grin at what it reads. Mount Weather. "We did it!" I yell out excitedly.
"Mount Weather, Whoo!" He calls out. We all let out another round of cheers, that is, until I see a dark blur or colour zoom across my line of vision, and straight into Jasper's chest with a resounding thud. The force of the spear had him slamming back into a tree.
"Jasper!" I scream out, followed by the yells of others. "Jasper!" I yell out once again, running to the edge of the rock, about to jump into the river to get to him, when Finn loops an arm around my torso, keeping me grounded. "No!" I cry out. "Get down!" He yells out behind me. I don't listen.
You see, out of every bad situation I have been in, which is a lot, now would have been the best time to listen to someone's advice. In this case, I did not.
I push myself up from behind the rocks we were crouched behind, to grab the rope, but my body is pushed back from the force of an arrow hitting my shoulder, ripping through my flesh. I let out a cry of pain as Finn and Monty pull my body towards them forcefully, just in time for another arrow to hit right where I was moments before. Finn holds me down in case I tried getting back up, as Clarke holds the arrow in place over the wound to stop the blood flowing out of the arrow hole.
"You should have listened to me!" Finn yells in my ear. I push Clarke's hand away and replace it with my own, and snap the majority of the arrow off, so it wasn't a meter out in front of my face, leaving the arrow still imbedded into my aching shoulder. "We're not alone." I say, looking around into the treeline.
***
We are all running through the forest, zigzagging through the trees with ragged breaths, trying to escape whatever through that spear. Monty trips, and falls head first while Octavia and Finn runs up to him, and yank him up off the ground. "Monty, come on, get up!" Octavia says breathlessly. "We gotta go!" Finn continues. I finally catch up to the group after falling behind due to my latest injury.
Clarke looks down to the ground towards a few scattered, blackened bones and kneels down. "What the hell are they?" I ask, bending over to catch my breath. She picks up what looks like an animalistic skull then looks back up at us. "What are they?" She says in reply.
"We are so screwed." Octavia says, but right afterwards, there is a loud scream heard in the distance, back in the direction of the river. Clarke drops the skull in surprise.
"Jasper. He's alive." I say, before turning around and sprinting back the way I came. "No wait, wait!" I hear Finn say, but I don't stop.
I run for a while, and Finn and the group catch up to me just in time for him to hold me back. "Stay in the trees." He says quietly.
"He was right there." I say looking over to where he once lay. "Where is he?" Monty asks.
"They took him." I say standing up from my crouched position. "Wait, what are you doing?" Clarke says standing up in front of me to block my path. "Going back. We won't be able to help Jasper without reinforcements." I say walking around her, to the direction of the camp. "Right, we could use some more hands." Finn says following behind me.
