"We should really stop and make camp. It will be nightfall soon." I say pushing myself off the tree. "Good call, I don't know how long Octavia will last without rest. We'll leave first thing tomorrow." Clarke replies standing up.
I pull off my backpack and zip it open, pulling out a tarpaulin that I found in the drop ship. I chuck it towards Finn and he grabs it, starting to open it up. "Jasper and Monty, go find some long sticks to hold up the tent, I'll go find some rocks to hold it down." I say walking a few meters away and I start to pick up some tennis ball sized rocks.
After about an hour of trying to get the tent to work, we had finally managed to do so. It was almost already nightfall, and we used the last minutes of light to set up a fire.
We sit around the small campfire and watch as the bright orange sparks travel up into the air, looking like stars. The fire was the only light source around us, making everything illuminate in an orange glow. "So," Clarke says, gaining everyone's attention, "What exactly is your name. We know everyone else's except yours." She asks me. The group looks over at me expectingly.
I look down into the fire, not replying for a while. "I don't have one." I state, keeping my eyes locked onto the fire. Everyone's eyebrows shoot up. "You don't have a name?" Finn asks.
I shake my head stiffly side to side. "How don't you have a name?" Monty pushes on.
"I was taken to the Sky Box before my shit ass parent could name me." I say matter of factly.
"I'm a twin, and as you all should know, it's illegal to have more than one child on the Ark, so I was taken away. Apparently my parents weren't floated because they 'couldn't control' whether they had a twin or not, so the council made them choose, me or the other baby." I continue, answering everyone's unasked question. "I'm sorry to hear." Octavia says, softening her tone.
"I don't need all of your pity, especially yours Octavia. I have lived this long without family, and I can carry on without." I say bitterly. Octavia opens her mouth to say something, but I cut her off. "At least you knew your family before you got locked up, I've never seen anything outside my grey cell." I say to her. She shuts her mouth standing, and makes her way to the makeshift tent, clearly upset.
I notice Jasper hadn't said anything through that entire ordeal. "What's got you all quiet? That's not like you." I ask him, looking towards him. "My Mom said I had a twin sister that died during birth." He says quietly. "Do you know your twins name?" He asks questioningly. "No, but I partially remember my Mother's name, I heard Chancellor Jaha talk about her outside my cell. Something along the lines of Anne, or Angie." I say biting my lower lip in concentration.
"Angeline?" He whispers aloud. "Yeah that's it. Wait how'd you know that?" I say standing up slowly.
"Because that's my Moms name." He says in a low voice. The other three watch on, not wanting to interrupt.
"What?" I say, his words not completely registering in my brain.
"You're my sister?" He says, but it comes out more of a question.
"That's impossible." I say, denying his statement.
"You're my sister." He repeats.
"No." I say harshly.
"Think about it, this all make sen-" I suddenly lunge for him, an evil glint in my eye. I wrap my hands around his throat, before Jasper can comprehend what is happening. "Why you? Why would they choose you over me?" I hiss out loudly, specks of saliva shooting onto his face. He wraps his hands over mine, digging his nails in, trying to gasp for air. He looks into my eyes, his face contorts into that of fear.
"Let him go!" Monty screeches, as He pulls at my arms, trying make me let go, but my grip was like iron. Out of nowhere, a brute force bowls me off Jasper, and onto the ground. I look up to see Finn looming over me with angry expression. I look over to Jasper to see Monty placing his fingers softly onto Jaspers reddened neck. "What the fuck were you thinking?" He yells down at me.
While all this was going on, Octavia had come out of the tent and was looking at us all with worry at the sudden noises.
My eyes glass over, coming to the realisation of what I had done. I stand up hesitantly, keeping my eyes to the ground in defeat. I walk towards the tent, giving Jasper one last glance to see that Clarke had come to his aid. I walk around Octavia as she stares at me with a look of confusion.
I sit myself in the corner folding my legs, and put my face in my hands, sitting like that for what seems like hours. Not crying, just thinking.
There is a sudden pitter patter on the top of the tarpaulin, and it starts getting faster. I hear a few of the group cheering in surprise and Joy. Was it... raining? I lift my head up and look out the doorway of the tent, and surely enough there were water droplets cascading down from the sky, to dampen the dried earth.
I've read about rain in the many books I've read, but I didn't expect it to be so.. Wet? I push myself up from the floor and stand in the doorway, looking up to the sky. I am too focused on watching the sky, when I feel a set of hands pull me out into the rain. I look forwards to see Clarke's encouraging grin, in which I don't return. "We should collect the water." I say to her. "Good idea, we're going to need it." She replies.
I pick a leaf off of a tree beside me, and it had a deep cup, perfect for holding water. The Clarke follows my actions, as we rest the leaves on the ground to collect the water. Unfortunately, as soon as the rain appeared, it had stopped. The leaves were half full, but it was enough to get us through the trip. "I think it's time we all get some shut eye." Clarke says heading towards the makeshift tent. Everyone except me and Jasper head towards the tent, and Monty gives us a hesitant look before ducking his head into the tent after everyone else.
I turn my head to meet Jaspers cautious gaze. "How's your neck." I ask.
"Sore." He says simply, putting a hand to his neck in emphasis.
"I didn't mean to do that to you, it was in the heat of the moment-" I am cut off. "I understand why you're mad, but what I don't get is why you're made at me." He asks with a frown.
I let out a grimace, remembering my actions. "When you get locked up in a cell all your life, you have a lot of time to think. A lot of time for your anger to boil, and when that rage reaches a certain point it gets hard to control. Don't get me wrong, I still don't like you, and I probably won't for a long time, due to the fact your parents chose you over me, but it's them who I hate, not you." I say taking a step away from him, closer to the tent.
"Our parents." He states. Confusion sets in my features. "What?"
"Our parents. They birthed the both of us." He replies, trying to get me to understand.
"No Jasper, they will never be my parents. What kind of human are you to be able to choose one child over another? That's not what a parent is, that's what I would call a monster. You may love them, and you may trust them, but if I ever see them again, I'll kill them without hesitation, just like they did when they handed me over to the Chancellor." I say walking back into the tent.
As I enter the tent, I see that Monty, Finn and Octavia are fast asleep. Clarke looks up at me from where's she's lying and sends me a sad smile. I sit myself down in the farthest corner from the others and rest my head down on top of my hand with my back facing the group. I lay there for a while when I hear Jasper enter the tent and lay down, not knowing I was still awake.
Throughout the night, I don't manage to sleep a single minute, but I do hear someone get up, and not long after, another person. After around half an hour, none of them return, and curiosity gets the better of me. I get up and tip toe my way outside and gasp at what I see. Everything was illuminating a vibrant greeny-yellow colour. My eyes go wide and I grin as I lift my arms to touch the trees glowing bark. The luminescent mushrooms and bushes under the trees made everything glow around me. I look over across the clearing hearing voices and see Finn and Clarke talking. So that's where they went for so long. I let out a half smile and decide to leave them alone.
I sit down outside the tent door leaning against the tree and see Octavia cuddled up against Jasper, and Monty to their right slightly snoring. I lean my head up against the tree and close my eyes, finally drifting off into a peaceful slumber.
