Five years have gone by since the children's first birthdays, the children were six. "James waits up!" Lena called out running far behind James and his best friend August, "I wanna play with you guys!" She whined.
"No, Lena it's an all-boys club! No girls!" James would call back and close the door to the attic, where their so-called club was.
Lena kicked the door as she approached. "I HATE YOU JAMES!" She would yell and cry.
For several years things never changed, the two boys would tease Lena, and when August wasn't there to rescue James from Lena, Lena would force James to play dress up, or have a tea party with her.
"Daddy, I don't want to come back here ever again!" Lena would say on the way home, "James is so mean, and he smells!" She would go on. "Lena, baby, we must be nice to them, they are important to us, we could become very powerful in the name of wealth one day," Her father would answer back.
"Why are grown-ups always talking about money?" Lena would ask and huff.
James, on the other hand, replied in the same manner.
"Mom, she's a terror! She is super annoying! And she made me put on makeup!" James went on explaining.
"James, isn't she a very pretty girl, hmm?" His mother would try.
"What!? Ew Gross! She the ugliest thing I've ever seen!" He would say storming to his room.
Oh, but did his mother have plans for him.
As they got older, they became reserved than at each other's necks. James would go out and play baseball with August in the backyard. Lena, on the other hand, would set up a spot on the porch steps with a good book and a cup of tea.
Their parents started to become worried as their children distanced themselves. "Luke, what if they don't fall in love?" Caroline, James's mom, would go on to say, "what if we don't combine our family's?"
"Now, now, Caroline, we will just have to force them together, not base it solely on love," Luke, Lena's dad would reply patting her hand ever so slightly.
"I'm trusting you, Luke." Caroline expressed her anxiousness by bit her lip gazing out at the children as they played.
