It was my first day back at work and I was quite reluctant to leave Brooke at the daycare.
Bones saw this and was trying to comfort me.
We got to the Jeffersonian day care and dropped her off asking for updates throughout the day.
I left the Jeffersonian reluctantly and went to the FBI building.
As I was driving my phone rang and I answered.
"Reagan"
He told me the address of the case.
"I'm on my way." I said.
This was a good thing if I had a distraction then I wouldn't think about being away from Brooke.
I picked Bones up on the way and we went to the scene.
"Lived here my whole life and I never knew there was a military base in the middle of New York City." He said.
"Yeah. You learn something new everyday." I said. "Hey where's the Vic?" I ask the cop on scene.
"PTs are attending to her inside the house. When we got here military police had already secured the scene." She said leading us to the house.
"What's the story?" I ask.
"Mary Ann Russell, 27 made the 911 call, she was beaten up pretty bad. Trying to find out the occupants of the house, trying to see if anyone else is involved. There's a lot of blood." She said quickly trying to catch us up.
"What going on? What happened?" I asked when they brought the bruised and bloody woman from the house on a gurney.
"Multiple contusions and lacerations." He said quickly wheeling her.
"Ma'am? I'm here to help, can you tell me who did this?" I ask her.
"Tommy... Tommy." She breathed out.
"Tommy did this to you? Who's Tommy?" I ask.
"No, my son Tommy," she said frantically.
"Where is he? Where is Tommy?" I ask her getting by her side.
"He's at school. Please, you need to get to him before John does." She said.
"Who's John?" I ask trying to get out the way of the paramedic and still hear her.
"My husband, he's John Russell." She said.
"Your husband? He did this to you?" I ask.
"Yes, he just, he just went crazy. Please I don't care about me, but don't let him get to my son." She pleaded.
"We'll find your son ma'am, can you tell me the last time you saw him?" I question her.
"Uhh, we had breakfast and he took the school bus."
"What school?" I asked quickly.
"PS623" she answered and I told Bones.
"I'll check it out." He said
"Do you have any idea where your husband would take your son ma'am?" I asked.
"I don't know, he just snapped." She said as they lifted her into the ambulance.
"Agent Reagan." A voice said behind me and I turned.
"Sir."
"Major Harris." He introduced himself.
"Ok."
"You ordered uniform officers to search this post?" He asks.
"Yes, I did." I said.
"Let me clarify something for you, this is a military post, that means you go through me." He said and I shrugged my shoulders.
"Roger that, sir. Do you mind telling me who I'm looking for?" I ask.
"Corporeal John Russell. Stationed here with his family between tours in Afghanistan." He said and I nodded.  "Now CIC is looking for them that's our criminal investigation command."
"I'm familiar with them, I served in the army." I admitted.
"Well then you should understand the protocol." He said.
"Oh no, I understand protocol. I just don't like following it." I said. "Did Russell go awol?" I added.
"Look we'll take it from here." He said.
"I don't think so. My jobs not done here until that little boy is found. And corporeal Russell to." I told him.
"You're making a huge mistake agent." He said and turned and walked away.
"Wouldn't be the first time." I said and turned to Bones when he walked up to me.
"Who was that?" He asked.
"Army hardass. Reminds me of my drill sergeant. What'd you get?" I asked.
"Tommy made it to school. But I just got off the phone with them, his father picked him up about a half hour ago." He said.
"Let's go find this guy." I said walking to the car.
I was sitting in my office looking for leads when my cellphone rang.
I looked and saw it was dad.
"Yeah, dad." I answered.
"I was just calling to see how your first day back was going." He said.
"I'm fine." I said and rolled my eyes knowing that wasn't the reason he called.
"Good. Then just remember what sister Margaret Mary always said." He told me.
"You really going to tell me to play well with others?" I ask.
"Yes, I am. You know that technically that this is there case." He said.
"Yeah, and you and I both know they don't have the resources." I said.
"Which is why it's going to be a joint investigation." He said and I huffed.
"You got it, commissioner." I sighed.
"And why you should remember some of her other words of advice." He told me.
"Never give up without a good fight." I told him.
"That's not the one I was thinking of." He said and hung up.
"Reagan." Bones said walking into the office.
"Yeah I'm thumping Russell's cell. Looks like he hasn't used it for hours." I said.
"According to the school John Russell picked up his son at 9:45, said he had a doctors appointment." He told me.
"And that didn't raise any red flags with them?" I asked my brow furrowed.
"They said the parents were not divorced and the never had any indication that he could be a danger to his child, although one of his teachers said he made this in art yesterday." He said and handed me a picture of John Russell shooting Tommy and his mom.
"Well that certainly raises a red flag with me." I said looking at the picture.
"I just need you to answer a few questions for me, about corporeal Russell." I said to major Harris.
"Alright. What are your questions?" He asked.
"Does he have a weapon on him?" I ask.
"Corporeal Russell signed out his weapon from the armory yesterday and never returned it." He told me.
"Does he suffer from PTSD?" I ask.
"He signed this form at the end of his last tour assessing that he is fine both physically and mentally." He said handing me the file.
"Also means that you talked him into signing this at the cover your ass meeting where there are 50 other soldiers down and you say 'hey, you can go home as long as you sign this piece of paper saying the the nightmare you went through won't have any effect on you and it won't follow you when you get back home." I said getting pissed off.
"He knew what he was signing up for." He told me.
"Oh, give me a break." I said. "Did you kill while on you tour? Check. Did you see dead bodies? Check. Did you see your buddies bleed out and die right in front of you? Check. Did the army help you cope with any of this? No can do." I said and closed the file.
"Look, in case you haven't noticed, this country is at war. The men you got going in, that's what this job is." He said.
"I know what the job is. And I went to those briefing and I signed this piece of crap myself so I could get home to my family just like corporeal Russell did." I said.
"What do you want me to do? Stop everything to cater a soldier that's gone off in the deep end?" He asks.
"I'm not asking you to change the protocol here. We already failed this guy, I'm just asking you to help me get him and his boy back safe." I said.
"CIC have allegations of wrong doing. When that investigation is complete, we share our findings with the appropriate military commands." He said.
"Military command. The last I heard this was a joint investigation." I said.
"No, a joint investigation involves more than one person. Not one person with a grudge against the military demanding information that we are not required to share." He said.
"I don't have a grudge against the military. I just don't like you." I said plainly.
"Well then we have found something that we have in common." He said and walked away.
"Hey." Bones said when I walked into my office.
"Hey."
"So it looks like Russell was paying out of pocket to see a doctor, Alex Dawson." He said and I froze.
"I know that guy." I said. "That's the guy they sent me to for anger management."
"Guess he's not to good at his job." He joked.
"That's funny. Anything on the license plate reader?" I ask.
"No." He said. The phone on my desk rang and I picked it up.
"Reagan."
"Yeah, ok." I said and hung up.
"The kid called 911." I told Bones and walked out to where they had the call.
'911 what's your emergency?' Said a voice.
'I'm scared.' Said a little kid.
'What's your name?'
'Tommy.'
'What are you scared of?' She asked.
'My dad. I'm scared of my dad, he's acting weird and I just want to go home.' He said.
'What are you doing?' Said a mans voice.
'Nothing.' Said Tommy.
'Who's with you Tommy?' Said the woman.
'No, no.' Said Tommy.
'Can you tell me a location?'
'Give me the phone. You're talking to somebody give me it!' Russell demanded.
'No, no.' Tommy fought.
'Give me it!' Russell yelled then the line went dead.
I had tears in my eyes. We had to find this guy before he hurts someone.
"Lt. Reagan. I got a message that you wanted to talk to me." Said Dr. Dawson.
"Yeah. Uh, a phone call would have worked." I said.
"I had a meeting nearby, thought I'd drop by in person." He said.
"Right. Uh, appreciate it. Can we go over here?" I said.
"How you doing?" He asked.
"Same old, same old." I said quickly.
"Is that good or bad?" He asked.
"Uh.. Little bit of both. I didn't call you about me. I called about a patient of yours. Corporeal John Russell." I said.
"I know. And you know I can't discuss patients." He told me.
"Not unless he's a threat to himself or to others. He kidnapped his kid, beat up his wife, I say that qualifies as the latter, wouldn't you?" I say.
"Aww, come on. I mean the army is giving me the run around we're running into a brick wall here. Can't you give me something?" I pleaded.
"Umm, I- uh I only saw him twice." He stuttered.
"You only saw me twice so I know your a quick study." I defended.
"Doc, I promise you we are on the same side here."
"He's still operating as if he's in the middle of a war. Instead of back home where it's safe. The extreme vigilance, paranoia, all ways post traumatic stress disorder can manifest." He answered.
"You know I hate that word, right? Disorder. I feel like we're talking about a damn vending machine instead of a soldier."
"Russell has done 3 tours on the first one, he was right out of high school. It's taken its toll." He said.
"I mean is he capable of murder, suicide, both?" I question.
"Like I said, I- I uh only met him twice so I haven't really had time to break it down, but would I have predicted this? No." He said.
"Well, what kind of predictions would you make?" I ask.
"He shared some symptoms. Night terrors, survivors guilt, that alone suggested some kind of break down. I think it might make him retreat to a place he felt safe. Trying to recreate a time he felt secure. And yes if he had described such a place to me I would tell you." He told me. "But he didn't."
I closed my eyes and took a breath.
"I ask again, how are you holding up?"
"Chair." I muttered.
"I just did." He answered after he sat down. I looked up and saw him sitting. "Irritable, controlling, throwing yourself into work at the expense of everything else."
"You know me, doc." I said.
"Depressed." He said and I closed my eyes and took another breath.
"I got to get back to work." I whispered and got up.
"For what it's worth," he started making me turn around. "You don't need to wait until your drowning to reach out for help."
"Copy that." I said and went back to my office to look for leads.
I got a phone call saying the wife was awake so I picked up Bones and went to the hospital.
"This last tour, I kissed my husband goodbye and a stranger came back." She told us.
"How so?" Bones asks.
"He's been obsessed with our safety, like he's living in a war zone, he's scared. In Afghanistan he was part of the unit that was scouting for IEDs he's been home 4 months now and still when we're out in the car, I see him checking. Like, he doesn't realize he's home." She explained.
"What set him off?" He asked her.
"I asked for a divorce." She admitted and Bones and I shared a look. "I just can't take it anymore."
"Do you have any idea where he would have taken Tommy?" I ask.
"Maybe his parents house." She said.
"No, we checked. What about friends, relatives, anybody you can think of?" I said.
"His friend Lile." She said after a few seconds. "He lives in Douglaston on the water. He was in Johns unit in his first tour, they stayed close."
"Ok. We need his name and address." I told her handing get a small notebook and a pen.
"He's the love of my life." She said as she wrote. "But lately, what I've kept wanting to say and didn't is 'who are you and what have you done with my husband' because my husband he could talk to me."
We headed over to the friends house and as we were pulling up I got a text.
I opened it and saw it was a video of Brooke at daycare. I showed Bones and we played it and saw her sleeping.
After that we got out of the car and walked towards the house where a man was sweeping the snow in his driveway.
"So you haven't seen or heard from him? Not even a phone call?" I ask.
"Nope." He said.
"When was the last time you heard from him?" Bones asked.
"A while ago." He said.
"Why do I get the feeling you're not cooperating?" I ask.
"Why do I get the feeling I'm being treated like a criminal?" He shoots back.
"Just so you know, we are trying to find John before he hurts himself or his son." I said exasperated.
"Do you have any idea who we're talking about here? You know he got the silver star. Our unit got ambushed and John Russell crawled through an open courtyard with machine gun fire so he could drag back two injured soldiers to safety. Does that sound like a guy that would hurt his son?" He asks.
"No, it doesn't." I said. "But it's our job to find him and get him what he needs."
"Oh, yeah? What does he need?" He challenges me.
"He needs help." I say.
"If I hear from him, I'll let you know." He said and turned around walking away.
"If you think of anything, here's our card." Bones said after he shut the gate.
Bones and me got back in the car and sat waiting for Lile to leave to see if he takes us to John.
"What makes you so sure that he'll lead us to Russell?" Bone asks.
"They served in the same unit together. It makes them like brothers. I guarantee as soon as we walked away he either called Russell or he's going to go see him." I explained.
"Do you still keep in touch with the people from your unit?" He asks and I take a breath not wanting to think about it.
"No." I answered shortly.
"Why not? I thought you were like brothers and sisters." He said curiously.
"Because I don't." I said trying to stop the conversation.
"Well, why not?" He asks.
"Because I'm the only one who made it home." I said a little annoyed.
"I'm sorry." He said and I went back to looking at the house.
We saw Lile open his door and walk over to his RV.
"Taking a trip in your RV?" I ask him while he's on the step I open the gate.
"I just-I just was checking." He said leaving the RV.
"Checking for what?" I ask.
"Why don't you just be straight with us before you get charged with obstruction of justice." Bones said.
"I was going to convince John to turn himself in." He said
"Johns in there? With Tommy?" I ask pointing to get RV.
"Yeah." He whispers while nodding.
"You step aside. Move." I said and got my gun moving towards the door of the RV. "Keep an eye on him."
When we entered the RV we went separate ways to clear it faster. After making sure it was clear I saw a letter on top of a dress uniform.
"Clear" I shout and pick up the letter.
'Dear Mary Ann,
I'm so sorry. I know you want to help me, but you can't. I love you more than anything, I am done. Please forgive me.' I read out loud.
After I read the letter I folded it up and let out a huff.
We brought Lile in for questioning and left him in the interrogation room for a while.
"I told you, he wouldn't hurt Tommy." He said as I entered the room.
"Just like you thought he wouldn't hurt his wife either." I said.
"He's a good guy." He defended.
"No, he was a good guy. Past tense. Now he's a broken guy who's screwed up in the head. And every second you waste playing games with me, his life and Tommy's life are in danger. So why don't you start talking and save me the BS war stories." I yell.
"It wasn't BS!" He yelled back standing up.
"You lied to me." I said getting in his face.
"He saved me!" He yelled. "I was one of the soldiers he saved, ok?" He said quieter.
"Ok." I said nodding. "Well, Afghanistan is a world away now soldier. He's violent, he's suicidal, he's got a gun, and his 8 year old is with him. Want to pay your brother back for saving your life?" I ask quietly. "Help me save his."
"I gave him a prepaid cell phone to use." He said after an internal debate.
"Give me the number." I said pulling out a mini notebook.
He gave it to me and I left to go to this thing for Jack.
"I found out that my great great grandfather fought in WWI, my great grandfather in Korea, my grandfather at Vietnam, my dad in Iraq and my aunt in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I guess you might say I come from a long line of warriors." He said and people laughed.
"Most of them even got medals. That for some reason, no one in my family talks about. And at first I thought that was really weird. But now I think I know why, I think that when someone sees a lot of really bad things they just want to keep it inside. They don't want to talk about it, because they don't want To worry the people they love. I see my dad and aunt go to work every day and I know their making a difference it someone's life. I want to be just like them." He finished and I felt like I was going to cry.
Everyone clapped and we went to dads for family dinner.
"That was a great job you did Jack." Jamie said.
"Thanks."
"I'm just glad that everyone could be there." Linda said and I noticed that Danny wasn't touching his food like me. "Especially you, two." She said looking between me and Danny.
"Danny and Allie have been working around the clock." Dad said and me and Danny looked at each other.
"What's your case?" We ask at the same time making the others chuckle.
I gestured for him to say his first.
"Someone keeps taking teenagers and the only thing they have in common is they went to the same club the night they went missing. They found the first Vic three weeks after she was taken dead in Central Park." He finished and motioned for me to say my case.
"A soldier beat up his wife and kidnapped his son and is now out there armed and suicidal with his scared 8 year old." I say sadly. "It feels so wrong...going after one of our own.
"It's tough going after a decorated vet like their a criminal." Said Pops.
"Well, he technically is a criminal Pops." I answered. "But by all accounts he was a great father and a great husband before he went back to the war. The problem is the war followed him home." I added pushing my food around on the plate.
"Are you trying to find an excuse for him?" Erin asks.
"No, I'm not. I'm just saying, I don't think he got the attention and care he deserved when he got back home." I defended myself.
"Still," she said.
"It's not going to make me lose a step in going after him, if that's what you're thinking." I said.
"Tough cases." Jamie said and me and Danny nodded.
"Yeah it is." Pops agreed.
"Your the only one who didn't become a soldier, why?" Jack asked Jamie.
"It just wasn't for me, bud." Jamie answered.
"Why not?" Sean asked.
"That's a discussion for a different day." Dad said.
"I was convinced that going to law school was the best move for me." Jamie said.
"So you became a cop instead?" Jack asked.
"Not instead. I always wanted to be a cop because just like you I watched dad go out everyday and make a difference." He explained.
"And he still gets some of the benefits like being shot at by total strangers." Dad said making everyone chuckle but me and Danny.
"What about you aunt Allie?" Jack asked.
"What about me?" I asked looking up at him.
"You were the first girl in the family to join the military, why did you do it?" He clarified.
I look away and think about why I wanted to be a soldier. What made me want to do that. Was it because of my family? Or was it because of my need to help people- no not help, save people. I have to save people. But with those thoughts came memories of all the lives I took and how many people I couldn't save.
I was interrupted from my thought when Jack spoke again.
"You don't have to answer if you don't want to." He said and I looked back to him blinking a couple times to push the memories back.
"I'm sorry, what?" I ask as I had forgotten what we were talking about.
"I asked what made you want to join the military. Are you alright aunt Allie? You were in a sort of a daze." He said and I put on a fake smile.
"Yeah I'm fine. Uh, I joined the military because of our family and because I have this need inside of me. To help people. To save them. So I joined the military." I said trying to keep my smile as memories flashed my through eyes just like they had been for the whole case.
"Have you ever been shot at grandpa?" Jack asked.
"Not everybody who served in the military get shot at Jack." Dad said cutting his steak.
"But have you?" He asked again.
"Yes." He said looking at Jack.
"What about you Pops?" He asked innocently.
"Well-uh if you're in the first marine division, then it's impossible to avoid getting shot at." Pops said.
"What about you dad?" Jack asked and I looked up to see that Danny was thinking about his tours just like I was.
"Yeah." He said nodding his head.
"Aunt Allie?" He asked and I looked up.
"Yeah, I've been shot at." I said once again remembering my tour when I was on the roof with my friend spotting me and the enemy opened fire on us and she never made it home, her blood was on my hands.
"You know what was really fun about jacks project? Was finding out that Pops dad was awarded two medals and WWI." Linda said pulling me from my thoughts again.
I looked up and saw Danny was watching me worried.
"Can you believe that?" Pops said.
"You mean you never knew?" Nikki asked pops.
"He never said a word." Pops answered. "I wonder why he never said anything."
"Because the men and woman who are in this family like to brag about everyone's accomplishments but their own."
"Uncle Danny, didn't you get a medal for your time in Felusia?" Nikki asks.
"Really dad?" Sean asks when Danny doesn't answer.
Danny shrugged his shoulders.
"He did." Dad said and sent Danny a small smile which Danny returned. "Your aunt Allie also got a medal for her time in Iraq." Dad added sending a smile to me.
"Really? How come you never told us?" Nikki asks.
"It just- it just slipped my mind." I said while shaking my head hoping to clear it.
"It slipped your mind that you got a medal? How?" Sean asks.
'Because everyone in my unit had to die in order for me to get it.' I thought.
"It wasn't that big of a deal." I said even though it was a Medal of Honor.
With that everyone went back to dinner until my phone rang.
After I got off the phone I went back into the dining room and tapped bones
"We have to go. We got a hit on John Russell's cell phone." I said and we got into the car after saying bye to everyone and telling Jack how well he did.
"It's picking up a cell tower a couple blocks away." Angela says through the phone. "Make a right up here. The signal indicates that your close."
I pulled out my phone and called Russell's wife.
"Mrs. Russell, we tracked down John to Long Island city. Is there anywhere of importance to him there? Or anything of significance?" I ask.
"Your first apartments there?" I ask. "Ok. Can you give me an address?" I ask.
We make it to the apartment building and we get out.
"That's his car." I said.
"The signal strength is a one he's gotta be here." Bones said as he talked to the squints. "Maybe he's inside?"
"I know where they are." I said looking up at the roof. "Come on."
We walked on to the roof and saw John and Tommy sitting on the ledge.
"Corporeal Russell." I said and he turns and stood with Tommy.
"It's ok. Slow down." I said. "Alright? I'm agent Reagan this is my partner Brennan. We're here to help you John, ok?"
"I don't need help." He answered.
"Maybe you don't, but Tommy- Tommy does, ok? He looks a little scared. Tell you what I'm going to have my partner take Tommy downstairs. He'll be nice and safe there and maybe me and you can talk a little bit. Alright?" I said.
"Come over here Tommy." Bones called.
Tommy came off the edge and ran towards Bones and he lead him downstairs sending me one last look.
"I know what's going on. Ok?" I said.
"You..have no idea!" He said forcefully.
"I did three tours myself. Iraq and Afghanistan. I know about the RPGs and the IEDs. I also know about the nightmares, the fear, and the anger." I said.
"And you're functioning?" He asks shocked.
"So will you." I said.
"You know how well trained I am? Everywhere I go, I'm doing threat assessments. As soon as you walked up onto this roof, I was already figuring how to take you out." He said. "I do it all the time. With everyone I meet. Every place I go."
"I understand where your coming from. As soon as I got into this roof I wasn't looking at you or Tommy, I was checking that there were no explosives that could hurt my people. Then I realized, I'm not there anymore. But that doesn't stop me from looking." I admitted.
"How long have you been home?" He asks.
"A little over nine months." I answered honestly. "I feel for you John I do, I've been right where you are. Let's get you some help ok?" I say.
"Don't move any closer." He said backing up.
"Alright, I stopped. John, I stopped. Hey, I stopped alright?" I said.
"Things would be much better for me, for my son, and for my wife if I jump." He says.
"No they won't. Ok? Tommy needs you. For years to come." I tried to convince.
"Not when his father had something wrong inside of him." He said getting mad.
"John if you made through the hellhole over there you can make it through this. Ok, that stuff that's going on in you, it's just a result of the combat. It's just like the worst most disgusting hangover in the world but you can get through it." I said. "You can."
"It's too late." He said.
"It's not too late." I protested. "You got people who love and care about you."
"My wife, she wants a divorce. My kid, doesn't even know me." He said looking at me.
"Ok. I can help." I pleaded. "John, I'll help you. I give you my word. I'll help you myself."
"This." He said hold up a medal. "This medal, I got it when I lost my 5 best friends...in a fire fight. AK47 rounds, I don't know why I survived."
"Maybe you survived because you were meant to get back to your family." I suggested.
"No, no it was cause I was quick. You know that drill?"
"Yeah." I breathe out while nodding my head.
John stand at attention
"What are the two types of people in this world soldier?" He said in a drill sergeant voice.
"John you got to leave that behind man." I said.
"The quick and the dead, sir." He answered ignoring me. "What are you? The quick. What are they? The dead."
"John look at me. John." I said and he looked at me. "It's time to come home, man."
"I don't wan to be quick anymore." He said and saluted. I shake my head.
"Don't do this." I said.
John falls backwards.
"JOHN!" I tell and run forwards and slam into the side of the roof not feeling the pain in my side only knowing that I couldn't save him.
"DAMN IT!" I yell and punch the wall. I sit down and sit on the wall thinking of what I could have done differently.
Later I'm sitting at my desk in the FBI building when someone comes in and sets coffee on my desk and sits down.
I ignore them for a minute then look up.
I see Dr. Dawson and I look back down.
I went over to dads later because we were all meeting there again.
We had picked up Brooke from daycare not that the case was over. And I was happy to have her back in my arms.
"We're here." I called.
"You're late." Pops called.
"Sorry, I had to pick up Brooke, Pops."
"Let me see her." He said and I handed her to him.
"It's 6:10 Francis." Pops said and I chuckled.
"You ready for this Reagan camp trip?" I ask Jack.
"Yeah."
"I'm glad to hear it." I said and gave him a fist bump.
"Are you going?" He asked me.
"No, no the last time I went camping with your dad I got grounded because Jamie talked me into helping him put his air mattress out on the lake." I said.
Jamie cleared his throat.
"I might've talked him into it, but you know the- the details are really fuzzy." I say and gain more chuckles.
"Like hell they are." Danny said from behind me. "You talked him into it and I woke up in the middle of the lake with a bird pecking me like I was food."
"Your the one that bought the air mattress." I defended.
"Come on help me load this stuff." Pops said to Danny, Jamie, and Jack while he handed me Brooke.
Dad came downstairs and saw me holding Brooke.
"Hey." He told me.
"Hey." I returned.
"I read your uh- dd5 on corporeal Russell. Your saying that he decided to come off the ledge, and then he slipped and fell?" He asked me.

"Thanks dad." I said and gave him, Jack, Danny, Jamie, and pops a hug before they left.
