I walked into the conference room at the FBI. And saw all the squints.
"So Omir got away. He was on a construction crane when he took the shot. We recovered the bullet casing." I said tossing the casing on the table. "It was- it was an amazing shot."
"How did Omir see into the lab?" Jake asked.
"Thermal imaging. He aimed for the person who picked up the phone."
"He meant to kill you." Said Cam the lead coroner.
"I'm the one who gave Vincent the phone." I told them all. "I told him to pick it up."
"You didn't know. There's no use-" sweets tried.
"I don't blame myself for this Sweets. I blame the guy who pulled the trigger." I said looking at him.
My phone rang for the 10th time since the shooting.
I looked at it and saw that it was Danny.
I hit the ignore button and put it in my pocket.
"Ok." Sweets answered.
"You still have blood on your hands." Jake said.
I looked away because part of me was blaming myself.
"Reagan she means literally." Angela said.
I looked at my hands and saw they had blood on them.
"What do we do now?" Hogins asks.
"We work to catch the murderer." Jake says.
"Guys just listen to me for a second here. Alright I've been through this. Lost a lot of friends in war. So why don't we all just take a little time and, and then tomorrow like Jake says we'll get this son of a bitch." I say to the whole team who I have come to like. Everyone agrees and they leave.
I stop Jake. "I'm staying at your apartment tonight." I told him.
"Ok." He said knowing it was no use fighting me on this. I nodded and he left.
My phone rang again and I answered it.
"Hello?" I asked walking out of the room.
'So your phone does work.' Danny said.
"What do you want Danny? I'm a little busy." I said annoyed.
'I'm just calling to tell you that you're late.' He said.
"Late for what exactly?" I asked walking out of the building to my car.
'It's Sunday. We always have a Sunday dinner as a family. Ringing any bells?" He asks.
"Don't be a jackass." I said.
'Ok. What's up?" He asked.
"Omir. He tried to kill me while I was at the Jeffersonian, I gave the phone to Vincent so I could get the trace. He shot the person who picked up the phone. I couldn't save him." I said. "I assumed that's why you were calling that's why I didn't answer."
"Are you ok?" He asked.
"Yeah I'm good." I said making it to the car.
"Hey. There was nothing you could have done. If he shot him with a sniper rifle, he was dead anyway." He said.
"Yeah. But it was supposed to be me." I said.
'Allie, don't go do something stupid.' He said and I could hear the others asking him what I was going to do.
I hung up and drove to Jakes apartment.
I walked around the apartment and shut all the blind and told him to keep them closed.
"Stay away from the Windows just to be safe." I said.
"Alright listen Jake let me sleep on the couch. Alright you can have the bed." I said.
"No. No. You have to kill Omir. You need your sleep." He said.
"Very logical." I said.
"Thank you." He said and handed me some clothes to sleep in.
"Good night Jake." I said.
"Good night Reagan." He answered.
It was the middle of the night and I heard the door open.
I reached over to the night stand and grabbed my gun and pointed it at the door.
Jake came in and raised his hands.
"I'm sorry." He said.
"No I'm sorry. Did you hear something?" I asked getting out of bed with the gun raised.
"No, no." He said looking back into the other room.
"Do you want me to put the gun down?" I asked.
"Yes." He answered. I put the gun on the night stand and turned to him.
"Ok. What's wrong?" I asked.
"He kept saying 'don't make me go.'" He said.
"What?" I asked confused.
"Vincent. He was looking at me and he was saying 'don't make me leave."' He explained. "He said that he, that he loved being there. Why would he think that I'm the one making him leave? What kind of person am I?" He asks.
I listened to him because I knew he needed to get this out.
I looked at my phone for the time and saw that it was almost five in the morning and that I had over 29 missed calls from my family.
"Come here. No, no, no you got it all wrong. Jake you got it all wrong." I said and he sat down next to me.
"No. I heard what he said. You did to. Don't make me leave that's what he said." He explained.
"He wasn't talking to you." I said.
"I was the only one there. And you. He wasn't, he wasn't talking to you." He said
"He was talking to God. He didn't want to die." I tried to explain.
"No. Vincent was like me Reagan, he was an atheist." H said.
"Ok. Then he was talking to the universe then." I said. "He didn't want to go. He wasn't ready Jake, he wanted to stay." I said and Jake was crying.
"Well if there was a god he would have let Vincent stay here with us." He said trying to find an explanation.
"That's not how it works." I said. He lays down and holds me.
"That's why I'm here." I said trying to comfort him.
