It had been 7 months since I told my family I was pregnant and I don't work in the field as often.
Bones and I had gotten our own house and it was perfect.
I usually work the safer cases.
Much to Bones and my family's dismay.
Bones has been trying to get me to agree to have the baby in a hospital but I think we should have the baby at home.
We were going on a tour of a hospital right now and Bones even made it s catholic hospital to persuade me.
"Our maternity facilities are number one in all categories." Said the tour lady.
"Including staff infection." I said because I hate hospitals.
"No, this is a great hospital, it's got great doctors, plus, it has the best lactation specialist in the world. She's so good, I bet she could teach me to lactate." He said.
"Ok. You've made you're preference for our baby being born in a catholic hospital very clear. And I know you only want a Catholic hospital because I'm Catholic." I said.
"Catholic has nothing to do with it, it's just" he says and I do a Hail Mary when we pass a cross. "It's an outstanding hospital, alright."
"And I want a home birth where I can control things." I said.
"A lot safer in a hospital Reagan, come on." Bones said.
"No on the contrary, hospitals are breeding ground for antibiotic resistance super germs leading to high incidence of ecoli and staffacocous infection." I said. "Wow that was a serious Bones moment." I mumbled.
"I'm sorry, is that true?" A man on the tour asks.
"No, no, no." Bones said and I reach into his pocket and grab his black light and shine it around discovering different kinds of bodily fluids on the floor, walls, and baby bassinets.
I got a call from Cam and answered.
"Reagan." Cam told me we had a case and I turned to Bones.
"Cam just told me me she found an eyeball in a toilet." I said to him.
"I didn't check the toilets." Said a lady in the tour.
"Great tour, great hospital. We'll be in touch. I'll get that lactation specialists number from you." Bones said and I did a Hail Mary when we passed the cross again.
"There are no signs of anyone being killed or dismembered in the house." Said Cam as she and Bones got the remains out of the toilet.
"Which means the remains must have come up through the pipe." Said Bones.
"Wow. The rest of the body is probably blocking the lines. This kid is going to have some serious issues with toilet training, huh?" I say walking in the room.
"Okay I have a sphenoid and what looks like several fragments of the maxilla." Bones said.
"Oh, you're good. I'm still trying to get ahold of this eyeball." Cam said. "Hey, how did the hospital tour go?" Cam asks.
"Bones liked it, but he seems very comfortable around, germs." I said.
"Yeah, boys are like that." Cam said.
"It was a great hospital. Shiny machines, masks all over the place, exactly what you need when your about to have a baby, right Reagan?" Bones said and I ignored him. "I'm going to need more bones if I'm going to learn anything about this victim."
"Oh. Local cops say root clogged up the sewer lines and stuff is backing up all over the neighborhood." Cam says.
"The question is how did the Vic wind up in so many pieces?" I said.
"Well the deceased could have become trapped in the sewer and then decomposed, which I have never seen but I would certainly like to. I could write a paper and, and cite you." Bones said.
"That's ok, Bones." I said.
"Maybe the victim was flushed down more than one toilet, another fascinating prospect." He went on.
"Ok, sorry I asked." I said.
"Animals could have eaten the tendons and the cartilage causing him to break apart into multiple pieces." He said.
"Bones you don't have to get so excited, ok? This is not a game." I said.
"Yes! Yes! A winner!" Cam said pulling the eyeball out.
"Oh." I said walking out of the room.
Later I walked into the diner with Danny.
"Hey can we get a couple black?" I asks then spot the cappuccino machine. "Woah, woah wait, what is that thing?"
"We're trying to rub out Mocha Joes down the street." Said the waitress.
"Ooh. What can you tell me about the spicachino?" Danny asks.
I look at him like he's crazy. Well he is crazy, but I never thought he was this crazy.
"It's like a cappuccino with four different spices." She said as if it was obvious.
"Danny let's just get on with this so I don't have to look at that thing." I said glaring at the machine.
"What do you have against a cappuccino machine?" He ask me.
"This is a diner, I come here because there is no cappuccino machine, understand? I mean, some things, they need to be sacred, right? Preserved." I started raising my voice. "Alright? In this country there is a line between coffee...and foamy crap! And when that line becomes blurred, people they just become animals." I said loudly.
"You ok?" Danny asked concerned.
"No, no I'm not ok." I said and people were staring. "I'm not dunking my donut into some cappuccino. That's not why I joined the army. I didn't join the army for that. You know?" I ranted.
Danny put a hand on my shoulder to calm me down.
"We'll take two regular coffees please, thanks." He said to the waitress leading me to a table. "2 black. Let's sit." He said to me.
"What?" I ask.
"Let's sit down." He said looking around. "Uh... Got to be honest, tiny issue. Somewhat oversized reaction. Even for your and my tempers." He said looking at me concerned. "What's going on?"
"Ok, I uh... Ok." I said.
"Ok." Danny said.
"I need to ask you for some advice." I said and the waitress walked up.
"Here you go, pretties." She said and set down black coffee.
"Look at that. Black coffee." I said. "Um... Bones, he wants to have the baby in the hospital and I want to have the baby at home where I can control things." I said.
"Have you discussed this with him?" He asks.
"Yeah, but he's dug his heels in. Come on, you know him." I said.
"Well, I say ultimately its your decision where to have the baby because you are the one who is having it. But personally I would have to say that it is safer in the hospital." Danny said.
"You know that I hate hospitals, I am not going to go to a place that I hate to spend 10 hours of my life in excruciating pain." I said.
After that we had lunch talking about random stuff.
Angela called and told me that our Vic was a guy who broke out of prison name Rob Lizebnik.
I called his wife into question her about her husband.
"So someone killed my husband, no surprise there." She said looking at me. "He was ripping off his clients, it was a Ponzi scheme."
"Like a Burney Madoff?" I asked.
"If only, Madoff's wife was left with something to live on." She said mad. "Rob, burnt through everything he ever had."
"Must have been fun while it lasted." I said.
"Oh, yeah. For him. He got to act like a high roller." She said. "He blew it all at casinos, buying fancy yachts, oh and there were plenty of hookers. There wasn't a dime left for me."
"Right. So who did you husband try to contact when he escaped from prison?" I ask.
"For help? Nobody. Robbie burned every bridge he had." She answered.
"Which means that that leaves you. Did he try to contact you?" I asked the woman.
"Not a chance. I told that son of a bitch I would slit his throat if he ever tried to talk to me again." She said and I raised my eyebrows.
"Really?" I question.
"It's a figure of speech." She said raising her hands.
"It's probably best you don't leave town during this investigation." I told her.
"Don't worry, I can't afford to." She said.
Later we found out that Lizebnik was killed in prison then dumped in the pipes.
So Bones and I were on our way to the prison to find the murderer much to my family's dismay.
"Jamestown is a hardcore lockup, alright? Just stay close to me, no eye contact, and I want you to keep an arms length from the bars." Bones said.
"Prisoners won't hurt a child, it's one of their strongest taboos, and since I'm clearly just a few weeks from delivery, I feel quite confident I will be safe." I said leaving out that I've known how to defend myself since I could walk.
"Alright, work with me on this, ok? Reagan, you have to learn how to compromise." Bones told me.
"I know how to compromise. I'm willing to let you pick our child's middle name." I told him.
"Really?" He asked shocked.
"Mm-hmm. And I can raise her as a Catholic." I said.
"Children need mythology. It helps them make sense of the world." He said and I looked at him.
"My religion is not a myth." I said.
"I'm an author Reagan I understand the concept of how a narrative works and so does your bible. A pregnant woman is about to give birth, she finds an inn, but they won't let her stay there. So she is forced to give birth in a barn. Whoever wrote that really knew how to manipulate an audience." He said.
"Well, it happened." I said.
"Fine." He said.
"You can pick her middle name and I will make sure she's born at home. Perfect compromise." I said.
A little while later Bones and I were walking with a prison guard through Jamestown Lockup.
"So Lizebnik's remains showed evidence that he was beaten a year ago." I said.
"No surprise there. The food here is all cooked by the inmates, but the beef stew isn't half bad." He told me.
"So you know about the beatings?" I ask and he nods.
"He was probably beaten to learn the prison hierarchy." Bones said.
"Exactly. Hey you want some beef stew you let me know. My wife was always starving before she burst." He told me.
"Thank you, but I'm a vegetarian." I lied to him.
"So is my wife! Except when she's pregnant then she can't eat enough cow. You should try the-"
"I'm not your wife." I said cutting him off.
"Lizebnik was dumped into the sewer system in pieces, we need to see the blueprints of the prison to see what drains could have been used." Bones said.
"Sure. Operation should have those. How about a cookie?" He asks me.
"Who did it, pal?" I ask.
"I baked it myself." He said proudly.
"No, the beating. Which one of these boy scouts beat him." I specified.
"Uh, it's impossible to tell, they pick their target and form a ring around them, you can't see inside then they go to town on them. Another prisoner jumped in and broke it up before the guards got out there." He said.
"Do you know who broke it up?" Bones asks.
"Here's right there." He said pointing to an inmate. "Haze Jackson. But he won't talk."
"Ha. Let me give him a try. Check up on the blueprints." I told Bones he looked at me worried. "I'll be fine."
He nodded and we went out separate ways.
They brought Haze Jackson to a room where I could question him then left me alone.
"If they say I knew Lizebnik then I guess I knew the guy. I didn't help him escape." He told me. "I've only got two weeks left in here, I wouldn't risk screwing up now."
"Lizebnik didn't escape." I told him.
"What do you mean?" He questions me.
"He was killed in here." I told him and he put his elbows on the table.
"What?" He asks.
"Yeah." I verify.
"Do they know who did it?" He asks.
"No. But you should. We like that you stepped in and prevented Lizebnik from getting a beating a year ago. You two were looking out for each other right?" I say.
"I just, did what I would do for a friend, that's it." He told me.
"Tell me about the beating." I said. "Who was after him?" I ask when he doesn't answer.
"I told you, I'm getting released in two weeks. That ain't going to mean much if I'm dead before then." He said.
"I can make sure that doesn't happen." I said.
"Not a chance." He said shaking his head and leaned back in his seat.
"Fine." I said and dialed Danny's number he picked up on the first ring. "I'll just extend you're stay." I said.
"You can't do that!" He exclaimed.
"Oh yeah, you're impeding a federal murder investigation. Yes I need Haze Jackson to be held, let's see impeding a federal invention and withholding information, that's a good three years." I said I could hear Danny laughing because he knew I was bullshitting it wouldn't be that long, maybe 6 months. Maybe. "Thank you for your time." I start to walk out of the room talking about how long we should add on to his sentence.
"Ok." He said and I turned around.
"Hold that thought." I said into the phone. I close the door and sit down.
"Ok? You tell me what I want or I give him the go ahead." I said.
"The last time I saw Lizebnik, the warden had just pulled him off his job in accounting because she needed to see him." He told me.
"Why?" I ask.
"Dude was in here for financial fraud or whatever, then he does the books for this place. Put it together yourself. All I know is, he went to the wardens office, and I never saw him again. Just don't say you heard it from me, they sick a guard on me, I might end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life." He said.
"I don't think that will be necessary director." I said and hung up on Danny.
I walked out the door and called Danny back.
"Director Reagan." He answered and I laughed.
"Hey, I got him to talk." I said walking through the prison looking for the wardens office.
"How're you feeling?" He asks.
"Fine. I feel fine. Why?" I ask suspicious.
"No reason. It's just with you being pregnant and all me and Jamie are a little more over protective. Oh and so is dad." He said.
"Great. Just like being a teenager all over again." I remembered.
"Bite me." He said.
"I have the go." I said standing in front of the wardens door.
"Bye. I love you and be careful." He said.
"Ok. And I love you too, director." I said then hung up.
I walked into the room and sat down and the warden looked at me shocked.
She and Bones had already been talking.
"I don't know how Lizebnik got assigned to the accounts." She said looking at Bones.
"Isn't that your responsibility?" I asked.
"I have a lot of responsibilities. I delegate. When I found out where he was assigned I pulled him off the job. That's all that matters." She said still looking wary of me.
"There were 500 drains that Lizebnik could have been dumped in. It would take weeks to check every single one of them." Bones said.
"I'm sorry, but should you be on a case? You look like your ready to give birth here." She said looking at me.
"That's exactly why we would like to move this along, shall we?" Bones asks.
"I don't know how he got the job in the first place, but it was a no brainier for me to transfer him once I found some funds had gone missing." She said.
"Went missing? I'm sorry why didn't you tell me that on the phone?" I ask.
"Lizebnik siphoned off a small amount. Less than $500, I nipped it in the bud." She told me.
"Doesn't make you look good, does it? Prisoners stealing from you?" I said.
"Rob Lezebnik was a criminal, and criminals steal. There was nothing unusual about it. The judge would have given him another six months." She said.
Bones phone rang and he answered it.
"This is Brennan." He said and I could only hear his side of the conversation.
"I-I don't have that book." He said.
"The dynamics of the nurse weapon indicate it was a shiv." Bones told me.
"So when was the last time you guys tossed the cells." I ask.
"We did a full sweep just last week." She said walking over to the filing cabinet and pulling out a large tub.
"Oh, wow." I said looking at the large tub.
"Knock yourself out." She said.
"Wow, there's a lot of them here, huh Bones?" I ask him.
"Lots of blood too." He said while flashing his murder ray.
Bones and I left the office to a room where we could set out all the shivs to find the murder weapon.
"This is a really excellent field technique. Each one of these shivs is tagged with the number of the cell in which it was found." Bones said. "It will be useful if I find a likely murder weapon. Reagan don't you think you would be better back at the FBI building?" He asks me.
"No, we are far more effective on sight." I said looking at the shivs. "Plus we have the equipment from the infirmary." I said.
"You're about to pop and I'm looking at 148 homemade murder weapons. I think you would be better off at the FBI building, more effective. Ok. Let's go." He said putting down the tub.
"Bones, look at this one." I said holding up a shiv.
"It's nasty." He said not paying attention and I roll my eyes at him.
"It matches the photo Angela sent us. I think this is the murder weapon." I said.
"Ahh. We could have a winner huh." He said.
"The tags says it was found in cell number Y203." I said.
"Y203 isn't a cell. It's an area of the yard." The guard says and I slump my shoulders.
"Who has access to that?" I question handing the shiv to Bones.
"Everyone, Who isn't sick or in solitaire." He answered.
"It looks like this is made from paper." Bones said.
"Paper?" I asks.
"Strong, heavy stock, tightly compressed, put together. It's a very effective weapon.
He grabbed a shiv with a razor on the end.
"Now what?" I question.
"There's something printed on this. If Angela can find out where this paper came from, it might lead us back to the killer." He said.
We were looking at the acid in the prison to see if it could help find the killer.
"Woah." I said.
"This is the mailbox works." The guard said. "The prison has been building them for the postal service since 1957."
"You use acid in the process?" Bones asks.
"Sure. They clean the mailboxes in a acid bath before the paint goes on. Hydrochloric." He said.
"Defiantly could have dropped a body in there Bones." I said.
"It's certainly large enough. I'll take samples and have them sent back to the lab to see if the acid matches the damage on the bones." He said.
"Look. I need a roster of the work crew the night Lizebnik disappeared, you got it?" I ask him.
"I got it." I said walking away.
"Ok."
I went back to the room where I question Haze Jackson when a guard brought in the supervisor of the mailbox works.
"Yeah. I been supervisor of the mailbox works for over a year now. So?" He said.
"So, Lizebnik took advantage of your parents didn't he? Wiped out their entire lives savings." I said.
"I'm saying nothing." He informed me.
"Someone does that to my family, I'd want to kill them to. What would I do? I would make myself a shiv." I said.
"I didn't make no shiv!" He exclaims.
"Oh, your in charge of the paint crew, aren't you? You could of easily disposed of the body in the acid bath." I said.
"Look, I didn't kill Lizebnik. I didn't kill anybody." He said.
"But you have him a good beating when he showed up here about a year ago. What was that about?" I ask.
"Who told you about that?" He asks.
"It was a lucky guess." I admitted.
"You know you're getting things out of me I didn't say. So, we're done here." He told me.
"Oh, I'll tell you when we're done." I said.
"I may have to sit here, nothing I can do about that. But I ain't saying nothing else without a lawyer so," he said making an explosion motion with his hands.
After I told Bones about the interview he lead me outside.
"Trust me, he's the guy." He said.
"I'm just supposed to accept your hunch?" I ask.
"Cmon Reagan, he's got motive and his own personal acid bath. What more do to want?"
"That all circumstantial Bones and you know it." I said. "You're pressuring me."
"You look tired. I mean you look exhausted. I mean I can see it, you've been on you're feet all day. These guys aren't going anywhere. Cmon, we can come back tomorrow. Let's just, let's just get back home, huh, get some sleep well come back if we have to. Look Reagan, you're not superwoman, you're nine months pregnant. You can't overexert yourself. I mean even you know that. Look at me, hey, I love you, if anything happens to this child I would die. So let's just go home, get some rest, and come back here tomorrow, ok?" He said.
"Ok." I agreed smiling at him.
My phone rang and I saw that it was Hogins.
"Ok. Make your favorite soup." Bones said opening the car door for me.
"Reagan." I answered.
"I just finished testing hydrochloric acid in some bone, all different concentrations, micro-pitting does not match. There is another kind of acid in that prison." He said. I hung up and turned to walk back into the prison.
"Uh- now what?" Bones asked.
"We have to go back in." I said.
"No, we do not have to go back in." Bones said.
"It wasn't hydrochloric acid, Bones. There's some other kind of acid in there. I know how fast word travels in prison. The killer could be destroying evidence already." I said.
"No, Reagan we don't have to go back in. Let's just turn around-" I walked by him through the door. "What did I just say? We don't have to go back in." He said.
We walked to the security section.
"We have to do this Bones." I said.
"Then I'll give you 15 minutes." He said trailing behind me.
"I need to know if there's another source of acid in the prison." I said.
"And I need you to do that fast for us." Bones said.
"There's only hydrochloric in the mailbox works, I can't think of any other." He told us.
I felt a sharp pain in my abdomen and I grabbed it. "Uh." I groaned.
"Reagan? You ok?" Bones asked concerned.
"Yes. It's just braxtonhicks contractions, I've been having them for the past month." I said going through the gate.
"Ok, that's why we should-" he was interrupted by the alarm stopping him.
The guard walked up and searched him with a metal detector.
My phone rang and it was Angela.
"Reagan." I answered.
"I was able to restore part of I the text from the paper. One contains a fraction, 1/3 it cups from 1/3 of a cup of margarine. The papers were from a cookbook. 8 different pages." She informed me.
"Is there any way to tell which cookbook?" I ask.
"Yeah. It's the Gordon Institutional Recipe Index 1993 edition." She told me.
"Ok. We need a copy of the Gordon Institutional Recipe Index the 1993 edition and there should be at least 8 pages missing." I said.
"I have no idea where that is." The guard said.
"That'd be in the kitchen Ace." Bones said.
"Sure, um, I'll get it for you right now." He said.
"No, no. Just show us where the kitchen is." I said. "I'd like to see it in context."
"No, no, no. You're going to sit tight. I'll go get it." Bones said looking at me.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I don't want our baby born in a prison." He replied.
"Why not? Their infirmary is an a accredited health care facility. Isn't that what you wanted?" I ask following him.
We make it to the kitchen and I start looking around.
"That drain by the coffee maker looks big enough to flush the bones." I told Bones.
He walked over and pulled out a pen and lifted up the drain.
"Hey. Look at that Reagan, no screws." He said.
"Found it." I said when I found the book we were looking for.
"Found it? Ok. Let's head back. Cmon." Bones said.
I opened the book to where the pages were missing.
"And there are pages missing." I pointed out. Whoever ripped these out must have left there prints on the opposite page." I informed them.
"Ok. Let's head back so you can pull the prints." He said.
"No, we have no time we have to lift the prints here." I said shaking my head.
"We don't have a print kit." Bones said losing his patience.
I looked around the kitchen and saw the cocoa.
"Well, now we do." I said holding up the cocoa.
"Cocoa?" Bones asks. "Great. Cocoa."
"Cocoa?" Ace asks in disbelief.
I sprinkle the cocoa on the paper and the grab a turkey baster and blow of the excess cocoa where I was left with the prints.
I took out my phone and took a picture where I sent it to Angela for her to run.
I got a call from Angela telling me thy Haze Jackson was the one who killed Lezebnik.
"Jackson dissolved Lezebnik in the acid and stomped on his bones so they could be flushed down the drain. He never even had to leave the kitchen." I said walking to the cafeteria.
"Ok. Great, you solved it. Now let's go." He said trying to get me to go with him.
"No, I need Jacksons shoes. There should be bone fragments in the soles that tie him to the murder." I stated.
"Ok. Fine. I'll do it. Not you." He said over protectively.
"No, it's to dangerous for you Bones. They won't touch me, I'm pregnant." I said.
"We're not gonna test that here, Reagan." He called after me.
"Haze Jackson." I yelled. "I want Haze Jackson."
I passed them rough the crowd with ease because everyone got out of my way when they saw I was pregnant.
I heard Bones calling after me but I kept calling for Haze Jackson.
Everyone started fighting and I kept walking around looking for Jackson.
When I found Jackson he disarmed a guard and went to attack me but Bones caught his wrist and broke it and sent him to the ground.
"He wouldn't have hurt me Bones." I said.
"Ok, well I'm being over protective." He said and the guards moved in ordering everyone to read ground.
"You, you risked your life protecting this Lezebnik guy, huh why'd you kill him." I ask Jackson I feel a sharp pain in my stomach but I ignore it.
"He was gonna pay me." He answered.
"Then you found out he had nothing left." Bones said.
"He played me." He growled.
"Uh, get his shoes we have to run." I said after another sharp pain that hurt worse than the last one.
"Why? Where are you going?" Bones asks holding a police stick to Jacksons chest.
"I'm in labor." I answer walking away.
"Great. She's in labor now- Labor? Reagan." He said walking over the people to help me get out of the building.
We were riding in the car and I was burning up.
"Just keep breathing heavily, alright? There's a hospital ahead about 10 miles or so." Bones told me and I was in a lot of pain.
Just then the car hit a big bump that caused me to loudly groan in pain.
"Stupid road! Stupid road! I'm sorry Reagan." He said.
"I'm burning up. Will you turn off the heat?" I ask well more like demand.
"I got the AC blasting, Reagan. Ok, you're in labor, you're in labor!" Bones started freaking out.
"I'm very uncomfortable." I stated.
"Right. Relax, just try to relax. Try to put the seat back. Decline. Try to breathe this out, we'll be at the hospital within half an hour, alright?" He said.
"We're not, not going to have this baby at a hospital, Bones." I said.
"Yes we are, we are having the baby in the hospital. Theres no argument anymore." He said.
"I'm not arguing, we're not going to make it to the hospital. Just pull over." I said.
"We're gonna make it." Bones fought.
"PULL OVER NOW!" I yelled irritated.
"Ok, ok. Ok, I'm pulling over. Alright, oh."
He pulled in front of an inn and I stayed in the car because I was in to much pain to get out.
"Stay right there. Just don't move." He said. "Hey, you. Yes I need a room."
"May, may I help you?" The man asks.
"I'm having a baby, no, we're having a, she's having a baby." He stuttered. "I need a room."
"No no no no no. I'm sorry no room." He said. "I'm going to have to ask you to move on. There's a hospital about 10 miles down the road."
"She's not going to make it." Bones growled.
I sat writhing in pain while listening to their conversation.
"Sir, please. Keep you voice down. We are totally booked. This countries most important wine consissor. A couple of days and have paid $5000 each for tonight's event." He said to Bones.
I let out a loud yell of pain.
"You hear that? She doing to have the baby right there in the car if you don't get us a room right now. Is that what you want?" Bones asked him.
"Try to see this from my perspective. I have laid out $50000 for this weekend, even purchased a case of 62 di margo. If I have to refund their money, I'm done." He said.
I got tired of waiting so I turned to them.
"I'M ABOUT TO PUSH THIS BABY OUT RIGHT NOW! AND IF YOU DON'T FIND ME A PLACE TO DO THAT, I'M GONNA GET OUT OF THIS CAR, SQUAT DOWN ON THE LAWN, AND HAVE THIS BABY RIGHT HERE!" I yelled and the man looked appalled. Good.
"She will. She'll squat on the lawn." Bones said.
"Ok ok ok. There is a lovely building around back that you can use." He said.
"Where where where?" Bones asks.
"Just right down the drive." The man answered.
Bones runs back to the car and gets in.
"There's no availa-"
"HURRY UP!" I yell cutting him off.
"Right." He said and started driving.
We made it to the building and I was lying on the floor groaning in pain.
"Breathe, shhh. I'm so sorry, Reagan." He said.
"For what?" I asked.
"Well look where we are. I should have been able to make it to the hospital." He said.
"No, it's not your fault. This is a perfect place." I said.
"And children who grow up on farms, have far fewer allergies and respiratory issues." He said trying to distract me even though I grabbed his arm in pain in the middle of his statement.
"Alright. Ok." He said as I yelled in pain.
"And it's hard not to believe in a higher power when you've just been turned away from the inn, and I'm about to give birth in a manjor." I said.
"That doesn't make you mythology true, ok?" He said.
"You really want to start with that? Right now?" I asked.
"Well-" I groaned and grabbed his arm.
"What?" He asks worried.
"I want to push." I said.
"Right push." He said and placed my right foot on his left shoulder.
"Ok? You gonna push? Push." He said and I pushed as hard as I could.
"There are some things you can't explain. Why can't you just admit there's a mystery to life, Bones?" I ask and end up pushing again.
"Push Reagan." Bones said and I complied yelling in pain.
"Your doing good." He said after I finished a push.
I was so tired all I wanted to do was sleep, but I have never been in this much pain before.
Bones was wiping away the sweat on my face and saying encouraging things to me.
"Your doing great. You're really close." He said then looked down. "Oh, I can see his head." He said smiling. "Push."
I took a second to gather my strength and then pushed.
I heard a cry and I stopped pushing.
I took a breath and relaxed.
I smiled at my view.
Bones was holding our newborn baby.
He handed him to me and laid down next to me.
"Hey, hey." Bones said.
"Hi." I said smiling at the baby.
He let out a cry.
"It's alright. There is a mystery to life." He said looking at our baby.
"Hey, it's your parents." I said. "Look at us. We're a family." I said and then kissed him.
We drove home got the baby out of the car and walked up and opened the locked door.
"Reagan, just be careful coming in." Bones said.
"Is someone here?" I ask looking around.
"Stay there." Bones said and walked and turned the light on.
When it came on people jumped out from behind the island and said "surprise."
At further inspection I saw it was my family.
"Oh, hey." Bones said.
Danny walked over.
"Let me see him." He said.
"Wait, sanitize." Bones said.
"Actually the more germs he's exposed to now, the stronger his immune system will be." I said then frowned. "I spend to much time at the lab."
"Oh, he is beautiful." Linda, Erin, and Nikki.
"I know." I said and smiled down at the baby in my arms.
"Wow, worthy of a manjor." Jamie said smiling.
"Oh. And we brought you dinners for the next few nights." Linda said.
"And diapers and towels because they do like to spit up, a lot." Erin said.
"And some champagne because you can drink it now." Linda said pouring glasses for the adults.
"Oh. Look at that. Champagne, huh Reagan." He asked me.
I saw the sign in the living room.
"What is that?" I ask. The sign said Welcome Stapes. "Welcome Stapes?" I ask.
"Oh, it's the smallest bone in the human body." Bones said.
"Well. We didn't know his name so," Erin trailed off
"Thanks. He is so lucky to have all of you." I told them.
He yawned and stretched.
"Ah. He's up." Bones said.
"So what is his name?" Erin asks.
"We named him Grayson." I said. "I don't know his middle name. We had a deal, we didn't have him at a hospital." I said.
He smiled at me and then looked at Nikki.
I was confused.
"Grayson Nicolas." He said and Nikki thrilled.
"Really?" She asked.
Bones knew how close Nikki and I were but I didn't think he would name our son after her. This made me love him so much more.
I looked at him and smiled.
"It's beautiful." Pops said and kissed my forehead. "Now, no more grand babies for a decade now that there's enough kids for each of you." He said smiling at us all.
We laughed and nodded our heads.
I handed Gray to Nikki and she took him gladly.
I walked over to Bones and watched them.
He put his arm around my shoulders and I leaned into his touch.
I couldn't be happier.
