I laid on the floor of my empty bedroom and stared at the ceiling, listening to the creaking of the old fan. I ran my hands slowly over the soft carpet and took in a deep breath.
"Livia!" I heard my mom yell from the bottom of the stairs, "Time to go!"
I stood up and took one more look at my stripped room. I slowly made make my way down the hall, down the stairs, and into the empty living room. I walked outside and saw the moving van and my brother's truck both packed to capacity. I loaded myself into the front seat of Josh's truck, plugged in my head phones and watched as my childhood home slowly was removed from my view.
Today was the highly unanticipated day that my family was moving from our beach front gated community house in California to some weird little town in Arizona. How wonderful...
The seven and a half hour drive started with Josh trying to make conversation, but I shut him down, making it obvious that I don't want to talk.
"Livia, you are really going to just shut everyone out because you are pissed about moving?" Josh snapped at me, "You aren't the only one with a life, you know? Everyone is upset about leaving, but you don't have to be a jerk about it."
"Sorry," I rolled my eyes, looked out the window and turned my iPod up louder. I completely have the right to be pissed off about this. I have to drop everything- all my friends, my school- everything, so my step-dad can 'live the dream' and get a new job.
Before I knew it, I was drifting off to sleep. I rested my head against the window and closed my eyes.
Honk Honk
I woke to Josh flipping someone off for cutting him off.
"Sorry," he looked over at me, seeing that he woke me, "I didn't mean to wake you up."
"It's fine," I sat up and untangled my headphones from my long blonde hair. I took the rubber band off my wrist and pulled my hair back into a messy bun.
"How long was I asleep?" I asked.
"Uh," Josh checked the clock, "about two hours."
I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck. I plugged my headphones back in and put my iPod on shuffle. The first song that comes on is 'Anything Can Happen' by Ellie Goulding. 'Now I see the truth that anything can happen,' the lyrics float through my mind.
Eventually, we pulled of the highway and saw a big green sign that said, "Welcome to Greenwood, AZ!" in big, white letters.
"We're here," Josh said with a smile.
I looked out the window and observed the town as we drove through it. We drove past a big building labeled Greenwood High, so I guess that's where Josh and I are gonna go tomorrow. A few blocks past the school, Josh pulled onto a side street and stopped in front of a cream colored, two story house with a little tree growing in the front yard.
"This is it," Josh said, getting out of his truck. He walked to the front door, put in the key and slowly opened it.
There's already some furniture because my step-dad, David, has been living here for a few weeks with my younger step sister Nicole while my mom, Josh, and I finished packing everything at the old house.
"You're finally here," David got up from the couch with a big smile. He grabbed mine and Josh's shoulders and pulled us to him in a warm embrace. "Where is your mother?" he asked.
"She was driving the moving van and she was a little behind us," Josh replied, plopping himself on the couch, watching what my David had had on the TV.
"Which is my room?" I asked, standing at the base of the staircase.
"I taped signs on the doors with your guys' names on them so it should be easy to find," he replied, now joining Josh on the couch.
I got to the top of the stairs and walked down the hall, observing the signs, "Mom and Dad's Room," "Josh's Room," "Nikki's Room," and down at the end of the hall I see "Livia's Room."
I opened the door and saw a big empty room, bigger than my old room, with a big window overlooking the side of the neighbor's house. "Great view," I sarcastically mumbled to myself. I pulled my speakers out of my backpack and plugged them in to the wall. I pulled out my iPod and hooked it up. The first song I played was 'Give Me Love' by Ed Sheeran.
When my mom came home, it's about 10:30 at night and we don't have the time or the energy to dig our beds out of the moving van, so I had to sleep on the couch in the living room. I eventually started to drift off, watching some weird game show, dreading the next day to come.
