The next morning, I was getting ready for school when I heard a knock at the front door.
"Hello?" I heard David say as he opened the door.
"Hello, sir, I am here to pick up Livia for school," I recognized his accent. It's Ashton. I rushed down the stairs.
"Who are you?" David asked, rather rudely.
I ran up behind him and answered his question, "This is my friend, Ashton," I smiled. David turned around and looks at me with a very confused face. "You didn't have to drive me," I said to Ashton, "I could have walked," I said, kind of glad Ashton came for me.
"No really, it is no troub-"
"She said she can walk," David rudely interrupts. He doesn't like me having any type of male attention at all. He thinks that all teenage boys are evil and stupid. Which most of them are, but that's different.
"Oh," Ashton was a little thrown back by my stepdad's interruption, "I-I'm sorry, sir," he stuttered. "I will see you at school then, Livia," Ashton said quietly and turned to walk away.
David shut the door and turned around to face me.
"What was that?" I scoffed at David.
"Who was that boy and why did he think he could drive you anywhere? Livia, you know you should not be alone with boys!" he scolded.
"He just my friend, okay? And I didn't even ask him to come. He was just being nice. Sorry!" I said sarcastically. I grabbed my bag and ran out the door, hoping Ashton was still there. Luckily, he was just getting into his car.
"Ashton!" I yelled to him and he looked up at me surprised, "Is that offer for a ride still valid?" I asked, walking up to him.
"I think it is," he smiled and opened the car door for me.
I smiled back and started to get in when David burst through the door of my house and yelled at me, "Livia Mae Harmon, get out of that car right now!"
"Ashton, get in fast," I demanded. Ashton gets in his seat fast and turned the car on. He got it going and quickly drove down the street and away from David.
I laughed as I watched David stand angrily on the lawn as we drove away.
"I am going to be in so much trouble," I laughed.
"What is wrong with him?" Ashton asked.
"He treats me like I'm ten years old and he probably thinks you're a thug," I smiled.
Ashton laughed as we pulled into the school parking lot. The whole lot was full except one right near the front, kind of like it was saved for Ashton. We stepped out of the car and it felt like instantly the whole school was watching.
Ashton grabbed my hand and entwined our fingers as we walked toward the building. It felt kind of weird and the people around us were all whispering as we walked by, but Ashton's hand was so warm and the way his large hand wrapped just perfectly around my small hand was amazing. We walked through the halls hand in hand until we get to our lockers which were conveniently right next to each other.
"Ash, are you Australian?" I asked after putting my books away. I've been wondering since I met him I just haven't had the time to ask.
"Yes," he smiled.
"Why?"
"Uh, because I am from Australia..." he answered confused.
I laughed, "No, I meant why are you here? In Greenwood, Arizona of all places?"
"I'm living with my uncle, but its a long story," he closed his locker and took hold of my hand again. He guided me through the halls to our first class and we entered right as the bell rings.
