I sat back, intimidated as Amy flirted with Cameron Rankhouse, a dark haired boy with striking blue eyes and a friend of Travis’s. They were both bent over a book and laughing about something, their arms slightly touching each other. I could see how pink Amy’s cheeks are. She flipped to the other page, Cameron’s silky laugh once again bulleted through the air.
“Amused?” Britt took a sit next to me, gazing as Amy tried her shot, and, amazingly, succeeded.
“Very,” I laughed, taking a chip from the bag of Lays she was holding.
We munched on our chips in silence for a little while, contented with the view Amy was giving us. Cameron’s fingers brushed Amy’s while he turned to the next page, Amy’s cheeks reddened, quite imitating a very bright tomato.
Britt shoved in another handful of Lays into her mouth, “How long’s this been going on?”
“Quite some time,” I took hold of my untouched milky latte, sipping generous amounts of it.
Britt crumpled the empty bag of Lays, dusting her hands on her bright blue jeans. Standing up she jerked a thumb to the counter, “Do you want anything?”
I shook my head, palming the tissue with the logo of the café printed onto it, hooking it around the latte’s hot container. I took a bite from my spinach and cheese sandwich, letting the heat of the cheese burn my tongue.
Just as when Brittaney sat back down with a tray of cappuccino and turkey sandwich, my phone chimed. I set the sandwich down, shoveling through my bag. As my hands cupped on my phone, I fished it out, unlocking the message.
ARE YOU FREE TODAY, BABY?
The message was from Travis. I cracked a smile, earning an amused look from Brittaney. I punched on the keys of my Blackberry, replying with a YES.
My phone chirped again, Travis asking me if I wanted to go on a drive later tonight. My smile widened, replying again with a yes. He replied immediately, with a SEE YOU LATER, SWEETS.
“A date again?” Britt mused in, taking a bite off of her turkey sandwich.
I nodded, almost shy, “I know I’ve been hanging out a lot with Travis and a little with you guys. I’m really sorry about that. Are you guys annoyed?”
She shook her dark curls, “No, Allie, that’s fine,” she took a sip on her cappuccino, “I understand, anyways. You’re in a relationship and that’s totally fine with me. Travis has proven his side and I’m really confident about the both of you. Besides, other people can’t even squish in time for their friends when they’re in a relationship, but you still can,” she nudged me on my arm, giving me a friendly smile, “you’re my friend and I understand every part of your messed up atom.”
I gave her a weak smile, “You’re the best, Britt,” I flung my arms around her, “thanks.”
She shrugged, turning back to Amy and Cameron who now had their book long forgotten. They were both holding their mugs of coffee and chatting casually. Cameron put his mug down, putting a finger under Amy’s chin. I saw Amy suck in a deep breath just as Cameron pressed a soft kiss on her cheek.
I could feel Britt’s shock waver through the air, “What? That fast?”
Cameron stood up and waved a goodbye at Amy who was trying to suppress her giggles. He walked out through the double doors and was gone. Amy pressed both her hands against her burning cheeks, took hold of her mug, and marched down to where Britt and I held witness of everything.
“Did you see that?” she screeched. Flopping down on the chair across from us, fanning herself with her hand, “I could not believe that just happened.”
I took another bite on my sandwich and so did Britt, munching on it before she interjected, “It just did.”
Amy took a sip on my latte, “Oh my gosh!” she pressed a hand on the cheek Cameron just kissed a few minutes ago, “his lips were so…so…soft.” She continued to rant about how his hands were incidentally grazing over hers and it was how it was so painful that he wouldn’t just squeeze it. She went on and on and on and on, Brittaney and I continuously ravaging on our sandwiches until they were all gone.
Brittaney took a sip of her coffee and held a hand up, stopping Amy from her nonstop musing of Cameron’s dark locks and intoxicating blue eyes, “So are you together now?”
Amy pouted, “Well…no.”
I furrowed my eyebrows, “So what’s the kiss all about?”
“I don’t know,” she shrugged, taking a sip of her coffee, “I think it’s a friendly one, you now?”
“A friendly one, huh?” Britt looked over at me from her mug of coffee, completely and utterly not satisfied with Amy’s answer.
“Whatever,” she chugged down the rest of her coffee, “it’s not like we’re ever going to be like, you know, an item,” she slid her bag up on her shoulder and stood up, “I’m heading home, you guys, okay?”
Brittaney nodded, “Okay.”
After a few minutes when Amy left, Brittaney and I concluded that we both head home as well.
I slid on some jeans, a tank top and a plaid shirt. Combing my hair into a messy ponytail. I padded downstairs, taking hold of my combat boots and grabbing my phone off the counter.
“I’m heading out, mom,” I shouted at the kitchen.
“Alright!” she shouted back.
I hurried outside the door and was immediately greeted by Travis’s warm embrace, “Hey, baby.”
I looped my arms around his torso and gazed up at him in adoration, his lips softly pressing on my fore head, “Where are we going tonight?”
He held my waist, knowing how much I liked the feeling of his hands around them. He guided me to his car, and backed the car from my house, “It’s a surprise.”
“A surprise?” I repeated, leaning onto his arm and pressing my body to his.
“Uhu,” his kissed my forehead, his eyes still glued to the streets.
We passed by so much city lights that faded as quickly as it appeared, it was beautiful. Everything was lights and in different colors as if to accentuate the world as we already know it. We passed through a bridge, the water gleaming as the moon cast its light upon it. While some where afraid of the dark, I was enchanted by it. How everything seemed to be a mystery when everything’s shadowed over.
Travis’s free hand snaked around me shoulder, my body still pressed against him. We have been driving for a while, the city itself a scenery. But then the car halted to a stop. And a sign lit up by neon lights blinked back at me.
I looked up at Travis who was now smiling up at me, “The Carnival?”
He nodded, his smile glowing in the dark.
