I saw this on tumblr and had to.

His mom and dad tell him that he really shouldn't play around with stray cats - they're unpredictable. They scold him after seeing him holding one of the small fur balls in their back yard late one night.

When it happens again, they're less surprised and as time goes on, they just learn to accept it.

Mitch does it for years; holds the little kittens up to see the pretty stars and to explain the constellations to them. He knows they're just cats and they most likely don't understand what he is trying to do but it makes him happy to see the stars' reflection in their bright eyes.

Mostly, he's a loner so the nights with cats become a constant. He loves when it's an especially starry night and he dreads the nights there is no visible moon.

Those are the nights he starts to meet up with his friend, Scott.

They had met in school and, although Mitch's shy tendencies were a bit of an obstacle, Scott is kind and waits patiently for Mitch to warm up to him. He never pushes and doesn't seem to mind holding most of the conversations.

Mitch is quite drawn to him.

So, it seems only natural to show one of the people he had grown closest with to the secret he holds dearest to his heart.

He makes sure to cover Scott's eyes. He has to tiptoe through his large backyard, his arms stretched up to reach the giant's face. He urges Scott to walk slowly and carefully as to not disturb or frighten their guests of the night and so that he will be able to walk at the same pace.

He doesn't know what to expect when he drops his hands and Scott sees the small family of cats. He isn't disappointed, though, when his friend gasps quietly and kneels down to rub his fingers along the soft fur of the babies.

Mitch notices a new member of the group and grabs it gently, petting it to calm its nerves as he angles it. He hopes the kitten can see the night sky and he begins whispering of the constellations and how beautiful the stars all look. It is simply habit now and he momentarily forgets Scott is there.

"What are you doing?" Scott asks and Mitch almost jumps. He isn't accustomed to human guests and realizes that, while Scott could easily be judging him, he is not. He is simply curious.

Mitch smiles, "I'm showing them the moon."
