I smashed my belongings in a small bag, as tears slipped from my face. I tied my hair into a braid, then twirled my hair into a bun. Next I pulled on a tank top, camouflage jacket, hiking boots, and black leggings. I was going to find the Golden Cup Of Divinity no matter what. My dad was the only one who understood me. No one could stop me. I clasped my bag closed and peeked out the window. Only a few guards were patrolling the grounds. If my timing was right, I could get through very easily. Now for the interior escape.
I slipped through the door and tugged it shut silently. The I ran along every wall pausing at every corner, listening for any footsteps. As soon as the coast was clear, I ran to the next wall and so on. When I reached the lake that guarded the castle, I let my guard down.
That was a big mistake. As soon as I stepped on the rocky bridge, an alarm blared and faces peered at me racing across the bridge. Guards were now racing across the bridge and I was only halfway across. I sped up and ran like I never did before. The wind whipped my face as I reached the end of the bridge. I tore through the Embargo Waretho (It means "Forbidden Forest" in Aracho Horanda a language spoken by the ancestors of our land) never looking back.
Probably an hour later (I know I have surprising stamina. It's a rare thing in Humdrowers but not impossible) I stopped, barely out of breath. I turned around trying to pick up the sound of anyone behind me. I heard nothing. Relieved, I jogged at a steady pace. Once a bush rattled, and I thought it was a spy. I took a pocketknife from my satchel and crept towards the bushes. I whacked the bush with all my might and then a dove flew out. Every 20 minutes I took a sip from my water bottle.
Sometime when the sky was almost turning pink, I started to set up my little room. The manual fell out and the walls popped up. I opened a door to the room, then placed in my essentials in. I plopped on the bed that was set up already and fell into a deep slumber.
The next morning I woke up with the smell of bacon cooking. I thought about the cook my mom had fired when I sprang back to reality. With an unintentional shudder, I grasped the situation. I was in bed and no one else was here. So then who was cooking? I rolled onto my shoulder and freaked out at what I saw. There was a tiny girl with freakishly large elf ears frying bacon on a pan.
I shrieked in fear, and pulled the blankets up to my face. "Who are you?!" I wailed. Actually, it was kind of muffled because of the blankets smothering my face. Soft hands gently removed the enveloping sheet of fluffiness. I stared at the sight in front of me. The girl stood in front of me looking at me with worried eyes. "Are you okay Princess Valerie?"
I scrambled to the headboard of the bed and bumped my head in doing so. "How do you know me?" I whispered, unable to raise it. The girl batted her chest. "I am a hoglf (hoglfs are a rare mixed species between Humdrowers and elves. However, their magical ability is to turn into any animal they wish) named Kristianabeaux Batonsiskiras Marlinah Corinna Warehorves Tedrüos Forivia Gurda Kendorall Sassiah Marquirsa-"
I rolled my eyes. "I meant what do you go by as a name?" She looked confused. "I just told you. Kristianabeaux Batonsiskiras Mar-" I groaned. "I meant your nickname." She looked even more confused. "What is this 'nick-a-man-e' you speak of?"
This was going to be a lot of work.
I enunciated the word slowly. "Nick-na-mah. It' s a shorter version of your name. Maybe yours could be Kristen or Beau."
She shook her head. "Other people only call me Kristianabeaux Batonsiskiras Marlinnah at the least." I persisted. "But it would take a long time to call you that." She refused.
"Please?" I begged. She gave up. "Okay. Just for you Princess Valerie Brown. You can call me Kristen." "Wait a minute, how do you know me though?" I said still befuddled. She nodded solemnly. "Oh yes. I was sent here by your mom to protect you from an evil force."
"It's Agatha right?" I asked excitedly. She shook her head wistfully, then let out a breath of air. "I can't say." My spirit drooped a little but still stood alive.
It had to be Agatha. I thought obstinately. Who else could it be? Who else would kill my father? Who else would-
"HELLO?". Kristen was snapping her fingers in my face. I blushed. "Sorry. I was just thinking." I murmured. "Anyway since you refuse to not go on this quest, your mom sent me here to keep you safe and sound. So I turned into a dove and-"
"Hold up. You were the dove in the bushes?" I questioned agitated. She nodded, her whitish blonde hair whipping up and down. "You scared me half to death!" I scowled. She paused, as if she was afraid to continue. "Well continue already!" I barked at her. "T-Then I followed y-you to here-"
"Would you quit stammering?" I retorted, grumpily. She obeyed and maintained her self discipline. "So I followed you here and saw how late it was in the morning. Therefore I decided to make you breakfast in bed. But then you woke up, screamed, and now here I am telling you how this-". She pointed at the room. "-came to be."
She stood up and dusted herself off. "Now since the bacon is burnt, we should be on our merry way and find the Golden Cup Of Divinity."
