I yawned, rubbing my eyes. I didn't know what had awakened my deep sleep, but it sure disturbed me. I started to doze off again, until a loud shriek pestered my slumber. "VALERIE!" The voice called in an aggravating tone. I threw my fluffy pillow over my ears with an inhumanly grunt. "Oh Valerie.. Open up!" The person called, rapping on the door. I let out a fake snore. Then the door rattled for a second, then burst open showing my "perfect" sister Annabelle. Her golden curls bounced as she sauntered towards me.
"Valerie!" cheered airily in my ear.
"WHAT?!" I roared, obviously ticked off. She smiled sweetly and chirped, "Gosh Valerie. No need to be so self centered. Anyways mom wants you down for breakfast."
Okay. Let's stop for a second and you can learn more about my stuck up sister, Annabelle.
She calls me self centered while half the day she looks in the mirror at her reflection. Her looks, though, are the reason why people disregard her horrendous attitude. It's obvious that my mom, Rosalinda Floradale Brown ["Queen Rosalinda of the Humdrowers (people with magical abilities) in Verdana (our 'Earth')" she likes to say], loves my sister way more than she loves me. To even it out, my dad, Brent Damien Brown loved me "a teensy bit more". It's probably because of our appearances and our priorities. My mom and Annabelle focus on being pretty and gorgeous. No wonder my mom's ability is to have no flaws in her outward appearance. My sister has the power to excel at everything she does. I mean it wasn't hard because of their brilliant golden hair and baby blue eyes. However, my father and I believed in giving back to those who helped us become this powerful. (He had the ability to conjure powerful shields and I haven't found out my power yet) Also we didn't have shining hair or perfect faces, we had amber eyes and cocoa hair. I think her ego is big enough mom. Thanks a lot. Continuing the story...
I rolled out of bed. Soon after, I picked myself up with every ounce of energy I could muster. I brushed my teeth until they were pearly white. I ran a comb through my brown, partially sun- bleached blonde hair, and tied it into a messy bun. Then I put on a white peplum top, skinny jeans, and my infinity sterling silver necklace (which was the last thing I got from my dad before he died). I paced myself towards the dining room apprehensively, knowing what was about to happen next.
"VALERIE! Not only you are late, you are also giving me that foolish smirk of yours!" (Thanks for stating the obvious). My mom screeched in a disapproving tone. "We have a family name to uphold, you know. While Annabelle here is trying her very hardest to be civilized, you are being ludicrous and ill-mannered. At least try to dress like you aren't a poor, homeless hobo." My mom snapped, while Annabelle beamed. "I'd rather be a poor, homeless hobo that a snarky, ungracious rich creature that you are." I complained.
I'm kidding. Here's what really went down.
"I'm sorry mom." I whimpered. She nodded her head, apparently satisfied.
"Sorry not sorry." I muttered under my breath, when she turned to talk to the cook about the abominable meal she had just ate. Subsequently, my mother spun around to talk to Colonel Caleb (my father's former best friend) about something yet again. I was beginning to eat the "nauseating food" my mom had despised, until I heard my father's name pop up in the Colonel and my mom's conversation. "-Brent is the only one who could help Verdana from the destruction that is named Agatha Korvas." The colonel shook his head sadly. "He knew how to conjure a protective shield around Treecrest (it's what we named our land). Now that he has passed away he has took the secret with him. Now no one can save our lands anymore. I mean if only someone could find the golden cup of divinity to save him." I got curious, but something was nagging at me before I could do anything. I noticed pure grief on Colonel Caleb's face, but my mother's was holding back a glower at Caleb. The reason why this furied me was because I interpreted this as a reason for my mother to have more glory. I mean most would love to have a title as magnificent as her's, she couldn't just stop herself for wanting more. That's what made me explode.
I pointed at finger at mom and snarled. "Why do you always have to so greedy?!" She turned around, taken aback. "You have everything! A perfect daughter, money, a huge castle, a honor most would die for, and the power to control half the population in Verdana! For once why can't you stop and think about anyone but yourself!"
She became indignant and looked at me with her icy eyes. "I will not let you get away with saying that to you own mother! I have given you-"
I cut her off and stared back fiercely. "You've given me what? Abusive comments that destroyed my self esteem? A life where I live under every petty rule you make? Well if that's the case then I'd rather live my life without you ignorant brat!"
I stormed off without saying another word. I stayed long enough to see the surprised look on my mother's face and that was all I needed to satisfy me.
