My hands roamed the gates, pleading for a entrance. Kristen and I were at the entrance of the Aros Corventé. The Silver Gates of Purity were impossible to penetrate. The colonel wasn't lying when he said this.
No, no, NO! My journey can't end like this. I though unhappily. I was so close to finding happiness.
Nostalgia hit me as I commemorated those good old days. I remember everything. From when I was born, when my dad rocked me in the crib. I remember when we played dress up and I pushed a dress onto my dad's athletic body. I laughed for a second through my foot long tears.
My face darkened again. But now this would never be relieved because I was foolish enough to come here. I started to sob again.
Kristen tapped my shoulder.
"What?" I blubbered, miserably. I looked up to see the gates swinging open.
I gasped in awe and ran through. The gates slowly moved open, one by one in unison. The wind blew my tears away as I grinned a dopey smile.
"At last the Golden Cup of Divinity!" I squealed. "Now where exactly is the cup?"
Kristen and I searched the space which the gates consumed. Flowers and bushes littered the grounds. Ten caves stood lined up next to each other. One potted lily stood in the midst of it all. The only thing out of place was a gray platform next to the lily with words engraved on them.
We read the poem out loud:"You came here far and wide
To seek your loved ones, why?
For I hope you live through
This not so empty place
And if you don't
you will suffer a dreadful fateIn the hands
of a scaly hide,
You will have to seal
your lovely prideSo beware
for if you swear
That you will not give up
You might find yourself
among the cup."
"Why do they say "beware" in the last stanza? I mean isn't it a good thing to find the cup?" I asked inquisitively. Kristen shrugged her shoulders.
"Whatever. This thing's probably here just to scare people off. Well guess what? I'm not scared!" I said defiantly.
A rumble shook the floor as a dragon stepped out from the third cave. It was a beautiful one with a purple hide and jeweled amethyst tail, which swung widely from side to side. It's eyes, however, were a magnificent shade of green and blue, which stared intently at me.
I broke its' hard gaze and looked away.
"Please don't look at me. It hurts my eyes." I whimpered gingerly, touching my eyes. They were now stinging, inside and out. I felt its' stare move and my eyes felt a bit better.
"Who are you?" Kristen said bluntly.
"I AM THE GREAT AND POWERFUL-" It paused for dramatic effect. "-PERPELL DRAHGONE."
I snorted. Drah-gone? Seriously? "You can just say purple dragon." I said, with an edge to my voice.
"ARE YOU LAUGHING AT ME? THE GREAT AND POWERFUL PERPELL DRAHGONE?" It bellowed, letting out a tiny wisp of smoke.
"Yeah I am." I snickered at the dragon.
"Well-well... I-um-BUT!" It stuttered, at loss of words.
"Now, what's your real name?" I crossed my arms.
"Barrett." He shot out a fiery ball. It plummeted to the ground and it left a 7 foot deep hole.
"Yikes." I winced as a burning ember fell on my shoe. I shook my foot wildly, trying to get it off.
"Yeah okay. I know you're a dragon but seriously stop with the scary imitation. It's not cool." I crossed my arms in frustration.
"I'm not cool," Barrett said. "I'm fiery."
"Blah. This is rubbish. We shouldn't be talking this talk. We should be looking for the cup." I said blatantly to Kristen. I took only a few steps before the ends of my jacket were scorched.
I yelped in pain and blew at the fire that was devouring my coat, to no avail. I ran towards the flowers and rolled around in the dirt, staining my outfit.
"Not so fast girls. You won't be going anywhere." Barrett grinned, his sharp teeth, flashing. "For a very long time."
He flapped his lilac wings in the air, sending a gust of wind in my direction. I fell on my ankle with a sickening crack. I bit my lip to hold back tears. I didn't realize how hard my teeth were pressing, until I tasted blood.
"What do you want from us?" I cried shakily. I attempted to stand up, but landed on my bad foot again. I screamed in agony as Kristen rushed to my side.
"I want to see you dead." His violet eyes flashed with hatred and he lunged for me.
I closed my eyes waiting for the end. The end to all this pain. Instead I got a shock of water in my face. I opened my eyes and found the entire place soaked in what looked like a tsunami.
Barrett was sitting on the ground dazed at what happened. Maybe a little bit too out of it. His eyes glazed over and his body was stiff and immobile. I threw a rock at his eyes. He didn't flinch. It looked like he was in a trance. Whoever did that, I silently thanked them with all my heart and felt proud that they defeat the evil "per-pell drah-gone."
A melodic voice suddenly echoed through the gardens. "You have completed the first task."
"Who's there?" I yelled. A figure stepped out from the cave.
"It's the other half of you."
