I hang up the phone on Sunny, and my smile is wide with excitement. "Sky is coming home today!" I tell Maya. As usual, she doesn't say a word, just sighs and lays back down on the couch. I frown. Maya has been like this for four days, not caring. She hasn't even said a word to me, or anyone else.
"She is?" Siena's voice is excited as well. My eyes focus on her glittering eyes. "Yay! Could we go to the park with her?"
"Not today, sweetie," I say. "She'll need all the rest she can get, and then we'll go to the park." Siena nods, disappointed, but then she bounces back to her regular self. "I've got an idea! We should make her a nice meal!"
If I wasn't tired, I'd think that would be a good idea. I don't sigh. I only nod. "Sure, what shall we make?"
"Baked potato," Lily answers before Siena can say anything. I know it's her favorite "When will she be coming home?"
"Sunny said around 13:00," I say. In about an hour. I realize they might not know who she is. "Oh, Sunny is a nurse at the hospital." My family nods. Well, everyone except Maya. I sigh but then put on a smile.
"Okay," I begin. "Let's get started."
Cooking a baked potato took longer than I thought it would. At first I started mincing the vegetables, and was depending on Lily to cook the potato. She didn't. No one did. By the time Sky wheels into the door, the potatoes start cooking. She honestly does look better, despite that she's in a wheel chair. Bags surround the bottom of her eyes, but a playful smile plays on her pink lips. Her eyes are a bright blue today, her long blond hair combed to perfection.
"Hey," I greet her.
"Hey," she replies. "Ooh--something smells good."
"Lunch," I say. "Baked potato. Your favorite. Okay, well, Lily's favorite anyway."
Sky smiles and then turns to the couch. "Hey, Maya."
Maya, finally looks up at Sky from the couch and smiles. "Hello. How do you feel?"
"Fine," Sky says, though I'm sure she's lying. "I'm just a bit tired."
"As am I," Maya says, then she returns to her deep sleep. Sky chuckles to herself and Siena runs into the room.
"Sky!" Siena says, throwing her arms around her. "I missed you so much."
"I missed you too," Sky replies. "Okay, okay, not so hard Siena." Sky says and removes Siena's arms from her waist. Sky turns her head. "Hi, Lily."
Lily walks towards her. "Hey, Sky." She then turns to me. "Ingrid, are the potatoes ready?"I roll my eyes. "No thanks to you. Dinner will be ready in ten minutes. Maya are you up for eating?" Maya's response is muffled, so I will take that as a no. I look at Sky's expression, looking at every detail on her beautiful face. I wonder if she was happy to be home.
After dinner, Sky asks me if I could wheel her outside. I had to wheel her quickly down the steps, noticing a beautiful sunset is being painted in the sky.
I ask, "Do you need anything?" She shakes her head. I turn around to leave.
"Wait," Sky says. "Stay with me. I want to talk to you." I nod and sit on one of the steps on the porch.
"About what exactly?" I ask.
"Everything," she begins. "Why is Maya so--"
"She's been giving everyone the silent treatment for the last four days," I say. "I don't know what is up with her. She doesn't seem mad, but I feel like she isn't telling us something."
