16. Confrontations and the Jo-Bros
Confession #16: Once my path is chosen, there's no changing my mind.
The next morning I decided to confront Matt, and tell him that it was his choice. I'd stayed up late into the night, debating on whether I should quit seeing him or not. But I couldn't. Matt was the happiness in my dark hour. How could I give that up?
I walked to his house, taking my time just in case I decided to change my mind at the last minute. But I didn't.
Instead of his mom answering the door like I thought it would be, his little sister opened it up. "Pie lady!?" She exclaimed after taking a long look at my face.
Not much later Matt showed up, chuckling at his little sister's confusion. "Nelly, this is Annabelle. My girlfriend." He emphasized the word girlfriend, making my heart do two totally different things at once. First, it swelled up in my chest, ready to burst from joy. And then it shattered into a million pieces.
"Ew," Nelly said, a disgusted look forming on her face. "Why would she want to be your girlfriend. You're gross!"
"And nowhere near as hot as Joe," I say jokingly, trying to hold back a laugh. Her face lightens up at the mention of her favorite Jonas brother.
"You're amusing," Matt says sarcastically, grabbing my hand and pulling me inside. "So what's up?" He asks, after giving me a light peck on the lips. I wish it could've been so much more. I was afraid that that might be the last kiss we'd share.
"Um," I say nervously, fumbling my hand around in my pants pocket and searching for the picture. "I need to talk to you." I look down at Nelly, and decide that this isn't a conversation for a little girl to hear. "Just you and me."
"Okay," he says, and then turns to Nelly. "Me and Anna will be upstairs. You'll be okay for a few minutes, right?"
She huffs. "I'm not helpless, Matthew."
Suddenly, I can't help but laugh at how grown up she just sounded. Especially for a little joe-obsessed girl like her.
Matt chuckles. "Alright, Nelly." He intertwines his fingers with mine, and we jog up the stairs together, taking them two at a time.
Once we're inside his room, his closes his door and turns to me. "Spill," he orders, evaluating my weary expression with his eyes.
I pull the picture out of my pocket and hand it to him. He stares at it for a few seconds, and then his face twists in what looks like pain. He gulps. "This is some crazy shit," he says, holding the picture up.
"I know," I say, my eyes filling up with moisture. I already know what he's going to do next. I'm putting him in danger, and I'm not worth it. So why would he even consider staying with me.
He breaths out a shaky laugh and runs his hands nervously through his hair. "How does this guy even know where we were? That's seriously trippy."
He continues rambling to himself for awhile, unaware of the fact that I'm on the verge of tears. I'm scared, and I feel utterly and completely selfish right now. I should push Matt away. I shouldn't have come here. Instead, I should've told him to leave me alone, and that I never wanted to see him again. Then he wouldn't have been in danger anymore.
But I need him right now, whether it's only for 5 more seconds or for the rest of our lives. If we even live much longer.
"Did you lock your windows like my mom said?" He asks, finally looking back at me. And then he notices my face. "Anna," he pleads, pulling me into a reassuring hug. "We're gonna catch this guy. I'm not going to let you get hurt."
I sniffle, and wipe my nose with my sleeve. "So you're not gonna run away from me?"
"No," he coos in my ear. "I could never do that. I just got you, and I'm not going to let you go that easily."
"Thank you," I whisper into his neck.
"Matt!!" Nelly's voice yells from behind, making Matt and I jump out of each other's arms. "Mommy said that you had to watch me. And play with me! And I want to play dress up now!"
I giggle. "Have fun with that."
His face looks frightened, but amused at the same time. "Leaving already?" He asks, pouting at me.
"I have work," I tell him. "Somebody's gotta pay for my college fund."
"Alright," he sighs, releasing me from his arms. Nelly watches the two of us, impatiently tapping her foot against the floor.
"I wouldn't wanna keep you from your fun, either," I say, making the two of us quietly chuckle.
He walks me down and out his door, with Nelly following right behind. "Be safe," he whispers, gently kissing me on the forehead.
I nod. "I'll try my best."
I slowly walk back home, thinking about all of the things he said to me. Really, we didn't talk all that much. But it still feels like he said so many things to me. He doesn't want to lose me. He'll risk his life for it. He wants me, no matter how much he might get hurt. Yep, he's definitely a keeper.
