NEW YEARS EVE CHAPTER!!!!!! YAY! ARE YOU GUYS EXCITED??? I HOPE SO!!!

20. A Scare for New Years

Confession #20: I love cold pizza.

When New Years Eve finally came around, all I could think about was Matt. He'd said that he'd had something special planned for me, but I wasn't getting it until New Years Day. All day my mind pondered about what it could be. Was he taking me somewhere? Did he get me a gift? Should I get him a gift?

Matt still had a bunch of family visiting, so I hadn't gotten to see him since Christmas. But we'd talked on the phone every night, which was a good thing. Another good thing was that there had been no stalkerish things lately. No weird pictures of me, and definitely no more boxes of lingerie. Everything seemed to be going perfectly. Maybe the stalker had finally given up.

I'd decided to work on New Years Eve, since I had nothing else to do. I needed the money, and I seemed to have lots of free time on my hands. I had always wanted to go to college, but in order to go I would need as much money as I could get.

Since it was a holiday, the Diner was completely full. Regular customers along with tons of families crammed their way in to eat their last meal of the year at our Diner. But why would they want to eat crummy Diner food for their very last meal? Wouldn't it be better to have a nice, home cooked meal? Don't get me wrong. The Diner's food isn't bad, but something cooked at home sounds a hell of a lot better.

Archie had me, Cindy, Laura, and even himself hurrying to take orders and bus tables. Laura was a sophomore in High school. She had strawberry blonde hair, and was dusted with freckles. For a newbie, she was actually quite helpful. Unlike Cindy, who just jabbered her mouth away.

I was stuck at the Diner until 10:30. Afterwards, when I was on my way home, I heard a honk from behind me.

A small, dark green car pulled up to the curb. "Need a ride?" Laura asked me, her lips lifting into a smile.

I smile back at her. "That'd be great." I dash over to the passenger seat and hop in, instantly relieved with a gush of warm air. She had the heater on full blast.

"So where to?" She asks me. I give her directions to my house. "You don't have a car?" She asks after a few seconds of silence.

"Oh, yeah, I do," I tell her, my cheeks burning with embarrassment. "It's in the shop right now, though. It's um- well, really old and super crappy."

She laughs. "Well, I'm free to drive you whenever you need. It's not safe to be walking home in the dark."

Just that one little statement makes my heart sink. Of course it isn't safe, but especially not for me. But maybe I'm over thinking this. Maybe someone just wanted to scare me, and it was all just a prank gone too far.

I nod. "Yeah, thank you by the way. This is really nice of you."

She grins, and her hands grip tighter on the steering wheel. "Yeah, don't mention it. But um- well, I sort of have a question to ask you."

"Shoot," I say.

She gulps, and I can see that her neck is now a deep scarlet red. "So, you're going out with Matt right?" I nod yes, and crook one of my eyebrows at her. "Well, I kinda-sorta have a crush on his friend..."

"Which friend?" I ask.

"Dustin Collaway?"

I laugh. "Let me guess. You want me to introduce you to him?" She nods. "Of course I will!" I exclaim. "But you do know he's going out with Marie, right?"

It was her turn to laugh. "They broke up. The Friday before Winter Break started."

I huff. "Wow, I am so out of the loop."
