Charlotte's POV

I heard a loud noise outside my door. Immediately, I was alert. In the three years I'd been in this hellhole, nothing like this had ever happened. The sounds of fighting filtered through the walls, faint but unmistakable. I didn't want to, but a small flicker of hope sparked within me—could this be it? Could I finally be getting out of here? No. Hope was overrated. I'd learned that the hard way. The fighting grew quieter until the silence became almost deafening.

Suddenly, the door to my cell creaked—then flew off its hinges.

I blinked, squinting into the light streaming from the hallway. A shadowed figure stood in the doorway, the light too bright for me to make out their face.

"Hello?" a voice called through the darkness. "We're here to help."

My breath caught in my throat. I wanted to believe it was real, but I'd been tricked too many times before. The aliens had played this game countless times, but something about this felt... different.

"Miss, can you come with us? We don't have much time," the voice said, more urgent this time.

I didn't care if it was a trap anymore—I was taking a chance. Slowly, shakily, I forced myself to stand. I wasn't used to walking without the guards dragging me, but adrenaline carried me forward. When I reached the doorway, I took my first step outside the cell. My vision adjusted, and for the first time, I saw my rescuers clearly.

Shock rippled through me.

"I'm Wonder Girl, and this is Blue Beetle. We're part of Young Justice," the girl said as they started leading me down the hallway. We hadn't run into any more guards yet, and for a moment, I wondered how long that would last. Hearing they were part of my old team left me speechless, but I didn't say anything. Not yet.

"Why are you here?" I finally managed to ask.

"We were on a recon mission and overheard them talking about a prisoner. About you," Blue Beetle answered quietly. I nodded, processing their words as we continued walking in silence.

That silence didn't last long. As we neared the exit, guards appeared.

"Stop!" Blue Beetle hissed, pulling us behind some crates before we were spotted.

"We need a plan," Wonder Girl whispered, eyeing the guards. "There are at least 30 of them out there, and only two of us."

"Three," I corrected.

"What?" she asked, confused.

"If you get this collar off me, there'll be three. Trust me, you won't need to do much if I get this thing off. But as long as it's on, I'm down."

Wonder Girl raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"

"I know that look," Blue Beetle said, shaking his head. "It's the 'I'm gonna kill someone' look. We don't kill people, it's wrong."

"Neither do I," I reassured him. "But I do want to hurt them. Badly."

They exchanged glances, then nodded. Together, they grabbed hold of my collar and snapped it in half. I released a breath I didn't know I'd been holding and felt my throat. The collar, which had been there for three long years, was finally gone. I smiled as I felt my powers rushing back, adrenaline flooding my system.

"Well, let's get out of here," I said with a wink, stepping out from behind the crates. I whistled, catching the guards' attention. "Let's play, boys."

The guards charged, but the first few didn't stand a chance. I quickly knocked them out with precise punches to pressure points.

"Seven down, 23 to go," I said over my shoulder, smirking at Wonder Girl and Blue Beetle, whose jaws had dropped in surprise.

They still thought I was just human. I intended to keep it that way, for now.

I took down another 15 guards with swift kicks and punches, leaving only eight standing. Wonder Girl and Blue Beetle joined in, handling themselves well. By the end of it, we'd taken down every guard without breaking a sweat. Well, almost. Old cuts had reopened, bleeding through the tattered scraps they called clothes. As the adrenaline faded, I remembered that I wasn't going to heal on my own—I needed medical attention.

Snapping back to reality, I looked to the others, who had just finished tying up the last of the guards. Wonder Girl approached me, curiosity burning in her eyes.

"Who are you, exactly?" she demanded.

"I'll tell you when we get to Mount Justice," I replied, brushing her off. "I don't like to repeat myself."

"How do you know about Mount Justice? And how did you fight like that? Why were you locked up? How long have you been—" Blue Beetle's questions tumbled out before Wonder Girl silenced him with a hand over his mouth.

"Thanks," I said with a small smile. "I'll answer everything when we get there. Promise."

Satisfied, they led the way to the exit. The moment we stepped outside, cold air hit my face. I stopped, letting it wash over me, savoring the sensation. For the first time in years, I was outside. I was free. I spread my arms wide, letting the cold sink into my skin. I didn't care if I looked like a freak—I was free, and that's all that mattered.

"Thank you," I whispered, tears stinging my eyes. "Thank you." My voice cracked as sobs racked my body. I kept whispering it over and over.

"We need to keep moving," Blue Beetle said gently, his face soft with understanding.

"You're right. Let's go," I said, pulling myself together.

We made our way into the trees surrounding the compound, walking for a few minutes before we reached the bioship. It looked just the way I remembered it. A wave of nostalgia hit me as the ship greeted me.

"I missed you," I whispered, running my fingers along the side before climbing into my old seat. The chair popped out from the floor, and the safety belt wrapped around me as I sank into it. Blue Beetle and Wonder Girl gave me odd looks, but I ignored them.

A laugh bubbled up inside me, quiet at first, until it turned into full-blown hysterics.

"Are you okay?" Wonder Girl asked, concerned.

"I'm great!" I exclaimed, still laughing.

"Why are you laughing?"

"Because I'm free!" I practically screamed. "I'm free!"

They looked at me, about to say something, but we were nearing Mount Justice.

"Miss, we're about to land. You need to stay calm when we arrive. Can you do that?" Wonder Girl asked gently.

"Can do," I said, the smile never leaving my face.

The ship touched down in the familiar hangar of Mount Justice. As the doors opened, I hesitated, trying to imagine what had happened to the people I had left behind. Clearly, the newer members didn't know who I was, and that realization hit me hard. I wasn't sure how to feel about that, but all that mattered now was reuniting with my family.

I descended the steps slowly, listening as Wonder Girl informed the team about what had happened. Finally, I looked up, locking eyes with the people I had once called family—the ones I'd left behind.

I don't know if this is considered a cliff hanger but it seemed like a good way to end the chapter.
