By now the streets were mostly empty and the authorities were handling things. The pair kept pressing on for the potential bomb and eventually, they found it.
Two people in masks were placing a dark metal package on the side of a badgermole fountain. When they heard Kuzo and Renko run up, they stopped.
"Whatever it is you're doing," Renko said. "Stop."
In response, the taller one stood and kicked. A jet of fire streamed from his foot. Kuzo stepped in front of it and my punched into the jet, quenching it.
"Clearly you didn't hear the man," he said. "Stop."
"Why are you doing this and what do you want?" Renko asked. His nerves were on edge and he wasn't too happy with the two standing in front of him.
The shorter one stopped and turned to him. She was a woman. She said,
"We are cleansing the disgusting relationship between humans and spirits."
She pulled out what looked like a crossbow and pointed it at him.
"We know what you are Avatar, and we know what we must do."
As if time had slowed he saw her finger at the trigger. In the earth below him, he felt her body move to shoot. Instinctually he pointed the crossbow up towards the sky with his metal bending and a bundle of electrified wires shot up.
The next thing he knew, time had sped up again and he saw Kuzo furiously punching in the direction of the woman, sending volley after volley of fireballs at her direction. She only had a small police shield to block them and was pushed back up against the fountain.
The taller one stepped in and matched Kuzo, fireball to fireball. The two fire benders circled around each other, kicking and punching, as their fire swirled around them.
The woman tried to return to her bomb but Renko stamped at the ground to send a quake towards her. She fell and took off running, seemingly abandoning the bomb. He started off after her but stopped. He needed to take care of the bomb.
He squatted down to inspect it. It was a box with wires and switches wrapped around it. A timer that hadn't yet been set was attached.
Kuzo and the attacking fire bender continued their fiery dance. Renko could tell he was getting tired. He could see his face covered in sweat and his body was beginning to slacken. It looked as the attacker was getting the upper hand.
Renko turned away from the bomb and instead focused on the attacker. He slid his feet along the ground and dragged his knuckles along the pavement scooping a mound of it up. He held it steady in the air until,
"Hey hot head!" he screamed, breaking the dancers from their cycle.
Using all of his might he threw the pavement at the opposing masked man. Kuzo barely got out of the way and fell to the ground as the earth struck his opponent.
Renko ran up to Kuzo's side.
"Are you okay?"
"Considering I was almost flattened," Kuzo said sarcastically. "Not too bad."
Renko helped him up. He brushed off the dirt and rocks from himself.
"Avatar huh?" Kuzo said. "I guess I missed that part last night."
"Yeah..." Renko blushed a little. "Not too many people know. Only the ones at the inaugural ball knew..." He paused. "She couldn't have known I was the Avatar unless..."
