At first, there was darkness. And then…
“You evil, vile, loathsome, pestilence!” Loki growled. “How dare you attempt to contact me?”
“I bear news,” I whispered into the darkness of my mind. I could hear Loki, but I could not see him. I hadn’t quite figured out the dream walking thing yet. “My news is that we know of your plans to dominate Midgard once more.”
“It was my traitor of a brother wasn’t it,” his voice growled. “He’s the one that’s told you this”
“No, Loki,” I replied. “It was your daughter. She has an incredible insight as to the things you are thinking.”
“Perhaps it is her gift,” Loki hissed. “I know that they have taken your side of the matter. Well, I say it shall be no more. I will destroy all of them, and you along with them. I have no qualms in killing you,” he spat. “I am with my master once more, and I say that is enough. I have touched the Tesseract, and she has showed me her desires. She wishes to be reunited with her sister. She will then win me the Earth.”
“Kind of like you wanted the Chitauri to do?” I sneered. “Remind me how that worked out for you again, please. And what of the Tesseracts? What will your portal usher in now that the Chitauri have deserted you?”
“On the contrary, I have my old armies intact. There are billions of Chitauri in the cosmos. I will assemble them all.”
My mouth went dry. If a few hundred of the beasts could destroy Manhattan, the thought of what one billion could do was terrifying. “When?” I asked.
“Oh, only I know that. Do you think that you can deceive me? I am devoted to my master and to the Tesseracts. I shall not tell you.”
“So you would kill your children? You would, in your arrogance and stupidity, kill your firstborn son, your only daughter, and the bravest horse I have ever met?”
“Bah, my children. They are traitors. I care not if they die.”
“We have power now,” I argued. “We are stronger in numbers than before. There are new recruits on our team.”
“Oh,” Loki chuckled. “I’ve heard. The son of the Hawk, the Man of Spiders, and Lady Patricia? They shall not help you. Like it or not, this is something even my brother cannot stop. I will cast you all into the grave.”
“If by grave you mean Valhalla, sign me up,” I said defiantly. “Remember we have Hela on our side. Let the Valkyries come for our bodies and carry us away! We will be reborn again in paradise.”
“Hela is no longer the master of death,” Loki sneered. “That power belongs to my master.”
“Your master? I thought you were no longer a slave, Loki. Or is that just an illusion? Ironic, is it not, that I who bear the mark of the enslaved is more free than you have ever been.”
“Silence!” Loki roared. The blackness of my mind ensnared my thoughts and rang like a bell. “I am free. Free to leave my master at any time, unlike you. It is in your blood that you cause attraction, and you cannot help what you are. You are the tool of the devil. You have the power to enrapture men’s hearts. That power is manipulative. You use it for your own good,” he growled.
“My own good? How many times have I told you I wished I were not beautiful? Look at the marks on my skin it’s caused me. Look at the emotional pain it’s causing me now.”
“You are a talented liar, woman. You don’t love me. You are to be given to the brother of the Soldier in marriage. I have spied on your world.”
“My world is your world.”
“I have no world!” Loki shouted. “But I am coming after yours. Your way of life will be extinguished. I will kill you and all your affiliates, even if they are my own children. I care not if they are my own flesh and blood. They have allied with you, and I shall destroy them.”
His words made me sick to my stomach. “Loki, what about your son? What about Sleipnir? He misses you. Every day makes him sick with not knowing where you are. He thinks you abandoned him because he’s different. That is his greatest fear. He’s just a child. Loki. He’s in pain.”
There was silence in my head for a good long while, until I finally drifted off to sleep, unaware of the sobbing of an abused, heartbroken god thousands of worlds away.
