Chapter 8: Electricity

I'm cuffed to an examination table. The bright lights above me are blinding. My arm and leg are numb with medication, pain killers. I'm in a lab, maybe for experiments, maybe not, I have no idea, but when I get out no is going to be happy. I try to move my wrists but I'm only met with excruciating pain that intensifies as I continue to move. My eyes twitch down to see electricity dancing on top of my body. It stings and makes my body ache, I can't feel anything, the instantaneous light has blinded me and the shock rolls like waves in my mind. When the feeling wears off I can't move anything. A door opens and a towering man walks in, his suit is pressed and his hair has gel in it, but what I notice is his bloodied glove that reflects the white light overhead, he disappears. I groan and start to convulse until a bullet pops out of my arm. It gleams and the blood drips off of it, the only good thing about this situation is that the pain isn't there.

"You, are a very interesting girl, Ms. Maxine." The man reappears with the bullet in tweezers.

"Magneto is usually not so forgiving, you're lucky he even wants you alive." He drops it into a dull metal tray.

"Why does he then?" I ask and when he turns his head towards me, he reminds me of Edward Nygma from one of my favorite T.V. shows. His wiry glasses show his intrigued eyes, this is probably not the best doctor in the world.

"I do not know, but Magneto only said to keep you alive, he did not say how alive he wants you." A remote is removed from his pocket by his red smeared glove, a long finger presses slowly on the button and I am being electrocuted again. The pain is greater now and I think the medicine is wearing off, no matter how slow. The sharp pins and needles turn to shocks, then to excruciating pain that runs up and down my body, and my silence to scattered whimpers, then to a short scream that I can't hold in.

Hours pass by, filled with fluctuating pain levels, I guess it's so I don't black out from the pain. Until it stops. Sweet silence fills the room, footsteps go towards the doors and suddenly they slam open and there is the sound of shoes scuffling. It's Ed, well that's what I'm calling him, and some other person I don't recognize. An arrow streams past me and embeds itself in the wall, an explosion follows shortly after.

I find myself flying through the air, no longer on the table, I land on my arm and hear a sickening crack. Even more pain, great. I try to get up, but all I can do is barely push myself up and fall back down, on the same arm. The sound of boots brings my attention away from my arm and I see three figures running towards me. When they come into view it's Nightwing, Hawkeye( Seriously guessing by the purple outfit ), and... Adam! He was here, the entire time!? I cry out to them and Nightwing runs over to help me up, leaving the other two trying to catch up. His hands help me regain my balance and I drape an arm over his shoulder for support.

"You ok Maxi?" his voice is muffled and far away, the ringing in my ears is not helping, but it fades a little when I nod my head yes.

"Hold on, just a little bit farther 'till the jet." I look up from my feet and see the jet a couple yards away, although it seems like miles.

"Ok, but I'm not sure how much farther I can go..." My legs start to wobble and I have to hold on to Dick even tighter so I don't fall on my face. He picks me up and runs the rest of the way to the jet, with the other two barely keeping up. Pain spikes up in the bullet wound in my arm and I feel tears forming in my eyes, I have to keep myself together, it's just a little pain, nothing I haven't felt before. Before I know it we're flying away from the island, leaving behind secrets and unanswered questions. Why did Magneto keep me alive just to be tortured? Has Mystique really been waiting this long just to betray us again? Why is my family so messed up?

The questions just keep coming and I'm sure no one has the answers to them except for the mutants we just left behind on Genosha. I'm sure we'll figure this whole situation out one day, but for now we have to find a place to land. I have no idea where we're going and I really don't care right now just as long as we don't run out of fuel in mid-air. Hopefully I didn't jinx our flight or anything, because I wouldn't want to die in a plane crash.

Maxine's falling asleep in my lap, hopefully she heals as fast as she did in the infirmary at Mt. Justice. I get up slowly, lay her head on the seat, and walk to the front of the jet and see Hawkeye at the wheel. Sitting next to him I start up a conversation.

"Where are we headed?" He looks at me and smirks.

"Somewhere in Europe."

"Let me see the coordinates." He gives me this map that doesn't have names for any of the land masses, but you can tell that the red dot is in the Belgium region.

"Why Belgium?"

"This is the map that one of the kids gave me, said we were meeting someone there or something like that." That's odd, why would one of the kids have a map? I wave off the question, Maxi probably gave them it before I got there.

"How much fuel is left in the tank?"

"Just enough to get us to our destination." I nod my head, of coarse there's only enough to get us there. A little turbulence hits the plane and I feel it shudder, as if it stopped and was trying to turn back on. The nose starts to dip and Hawkeye tries to pull up, but it's no use, the plane's not even running. The strip of water flies below us and we are now over land, hopefully we won't kill any civilians when we crash. A green pasture comes into view and the plane flips onto it's side, causing everyone to jerk sideways and I hit my head in the process.
