"Mornin' El," I said.
"It's two in the afternoon," you said, not looking up from your book.
"How do you even know the time when you don't look up?" I asked, pouring two mugs of coffee.
"Well, smart ass it's actually 2:15." I handed you a mug.
We were in Orlando, Florida. After we both got the good news we've been trying to find a weekend to get away before work consumed us.
It was a month after you'd been told you'd be published and I got my directing job.
"We leave for Disney World in an hour," you reminded me, as I headed for the washroom.
You looked up to see me standing in the doorway.
"What?" You asked.
"I was hoping for some company," I said and jerked my head to the shower.
"The only company you're getting is your left and your right hands," you said.
I searched for someone to take our photo in front of the castle.
"Excuse me," I asked, stopping a couple. I checked to make sure you were far behind me. I whispered to the guy and handed him your camera.
"Ready?" I asked you.
You nodded.
I looked down at my shoe which was untied. "I need to tie my shoe," I said, reaching down.
I settled on one knee and looked up at you.
"Last year I met the most beautiful girl ever in a coffee shop and I fell in love. Last month you ask me if things could get any greater. This is your greater. So, Ella Rose Jones, will you marry me?"
"Yes," you said.
I slipped the ring on your finger and stood up to kiss you.
---
I walk into the cafe a bell rings above my head.
I order what you always had. "Black Coffee, one shot of espresso."
I sit down in the corner booth. The same one we met.
If I close my eyes I can see you sitting across from me, tapping away on your keyboard. Your blonde hair held up by a pencil or two and your glasses perched on your nose because you were too rushed to put in contacts.
Why did you have to leave me?
I wait for my coffee to get cold like how you drank yours before sipping it.
I finish the coffee and leave.
