The Last Year

Old Friends

As I walked the schools hallway for the first time this year people stare endlessly at me. They don't stare at me because of my short skirt dark painted nails or my wild curly hair. They stare at me because I'm holding hands with Wesley Brooks. Me and Wesley started dating over the summer and we basically had a whirl wind romance. We were never friends before and we hadn't even talked before. We had a couple neutral friends but that was it. He walks me to my first period and then kisses my cheek before heading to his first period. As I take my seat Kate Faulkner approaches me. "Mia why didn't you tell me you and Wesley had started dating?" She comes over to hug me. She acts like we've been best friends for years but really I barely ever talked or made eye contact with her. Sweet dear Katey Faulkner was friends with everyone and everyone loved and adored her. Well almost everyone. "We wanted it to be a surprise. No hard feelings?" I say giving her the I'm sorry face I've perfected over the years. "Of course not Mia!! Don't be silly. So I guess I'll be seeing you around more?" She says smiling at me."Yep it looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of each other." She nods and takes her seat. No matter what I will never be able to think of Kate Faulkner as a friend. Not after what happened last year.

I felt relief as lunch finally came around. My four best friends were already waiting for me at our lunch table. "Soooo....." Christy starts. "How has the first day of school been with your new boyfriend?" I roll my eyes. "Kate wouldn't leave me alone after first period. She thinks we're like best friends now. I guess that's what I get for dating her boyfriend's best friend." I say as I start to play with my food when Jersey my boy best friend says "I don't even know what you see in Wesley." Kelsey my other best friend who is dating Jersey hits him in the shoulder. " I'm just saying. You're way out of his league Mia and I think we can all agree on that." He says looking around the table for some to disagree with him and no one does disagree. Even I knew I was out of his league but after last year he mended all my wounds and he helped me after I had fallen. He made me feel wanted." Jersey he treats her good. It's hard to find someone who'll treat you good now of days." Kelsey says. "What? Do I not treat you good enough Kels?" Jersey says looking at her. Christy breaks out into laughter and I honestly have to kind of laugh. Jersey is my boy best friend but he was sometimes a lousy boyfriend. Not all the time just sometimes but Jersey is a good guy and I'm glad him and Kelsey are together."I'm not saying that Jersey. I'm just saying I'm glad our dear friend Mia here has found someone good for her specially after-" I cut her off. "Let's not talk about my love life. Jared" I say turning to Jersey's twin brother. "What do you want to talk about?" Jared didn't usually get a chance to talk. Before he could say anything Kate and Wes came up to me. "Mia aren't you going to join us for lunch at our table?" Kate says. I didn't want to go but I knew Wesley wanted me there." Yeah... Sure I'm coming." I say starting to pick up my tray. "I didn't know lunch was now you and Wesley time." Kelsey says." I didn't either." I say as I get up to leave.

Sitting at their table was very close to sitting in the jungle. It was completely new territory for me. The whole table was filled with boys except for me and Kate. I tried picking up a conversation with Wes but he seemed more interested in his friends. I thought things couldn't get worse when - "Jeremiah there you are!!" Kate says going to her boyfriends side immediately. "Did you know Mia and Wesley are dating now." Kate says sitting across from me and next to Jeremiah. "No I didn't." He says not taking his cold hard blue eyes off of me. Me and Jeremiah have a complicated past few people know of. We were once friends and now we're nothing. "So Mia Peea how's it been?" He says with a cocky grin. Mia Peea was a my nickname from kindergarten when I accidentally peed my pants during nap time. I took a deep breath. He wasn't going to get the best of me. Not today. "I've been perfectly well but since we're at the same table now I would have to say I feel like dying." I say this without breaking my gaze from him. "Ouch Mia is that any way to treat an old friend?" He says. Kate looks kind of confused. She doesn't know anything about our old friendship. "Am I missing something?" She says looking at me. "No. I have to go. Tell Wes I had to go. See ya Kate." I turn to leave when I hear " Mia!" I turn around and look at Jeremiah. For a moment I think he's going to say something I would want to hear but instead he just says "Bye best friend." I roll my eyes and yell back "Go die in a hole."
