One Soul

The knife left his hand, whirling straight at me.

I was frozen in place - not because of the weapon aiming for my heart but the person who threw it.

He was my brother, mother, lover – we were freakin' twin souls. No, not soulmates. Twin souls.

Before we came to Earth, we were ONE. Not you and I, his and her. We were a single soul that split in two when we entered your planet's atmosphere. It was so wrenching, unexpected and disorienting that when we spent our first lifetime apart, I felt empty. I tried to fill the void with worldly possessions. Yet, I was not satisfied. It was in a funeral I attended with a friend that I met him. He had already passed from this world. A stranger wrapped in a white burial shroud, I cried for the deceased. My soul recognized the fragment which I lost. Thus, I promised that we would see each other in the next life.

So, it had come to pass that we became brothers, then parent and child, and lovers. It was not easy because in each lifetime we forgot our previous lives. The only consolation we've had was that connection we shared as one soul.

Now, it seems Fate has other ideas for us. He an assassin paid to have me murdered.

Our eyes met for that split second. His widened in recognition and horror. Everything unfolded in a painfully slow motion. The blade advanced towards me as he moved forward. His hands gesturing for me to move and his mouth opening and closing.

The dagger struck me through the chest.

I did not feel pain; he had aimed true and death came to me before I fell.

My soul separated from my body.

I watched him kneel over my corpse.

A tear slipped down his cheek. Brokenly, he said, "I'm sorry."

"There is nothing to forgive", I replied, though he could not hear me. "Thank you for making it quick. I will see you again in the next life, my twin soul."

A light appeared ahead, beckoning me. I stood and made my way towards it. Before I entered the light, I turned to see him square his shoulders and say, "May we meet in the afterlife or the next. Until then, happy travels, my friend."

I smiled.

We were one soul that became two. We might have separate lives, but our paths cross once in a while. To see each other, even for a glimpse - no matter the circumstance is enough.
