I rolled over in bed to look at my clock. 9:30 am. Why am I up? I have to meet Ryan for lunch at 11:30 so I have time to get ready still. A lot of time. I started to roll over and go back to sleep when my phone buzzed underneath my pillow. "argh" I grabbed the phone and say the name Ryan flashing on the screen. 'Speak of the devil and he shall appear.' I clicked the green answer button and put the phone to my ear.
"Hello."
"Hello to you too, though you don't sound happy, don't want to hear from me?" I could tell he was smirking on the other side of the phone.
"Just woke up seconds ago. What's up." I rolled out of bed and searched for my pants I tore off in the middle of the night.
"Well, I was calling to make sure you weren't going to bail on me." Ah found them. "No I will be there. Corner Coffee Shop right?" I walked to the bathroom, to start the shower.
"Yes ma'am, 11:30 sharp, don't be late." I grabbed a towel off the rack, and mumbled a yeah. That always annoyed me when he was mister punctual. Where is the fun in that?
We said our goodbyes, and I jumped in the shower. I really don't want to go, but I really have to now that I confirmed it. I finished up in the shower and got dressed. I decided on a white summer dress with a navy blue cardigan and my brown high heeled cowboy boots. I let my hair down wavy, and did a small braid to pull back my bangs. I did light neutral make-up. And wallah I was ready.
I grabbed my small carrier bag, and walked down the stairs to my car, I texted Ryan that I was leaving, and saw no text yet from Myren. 'Weird, but don't over think it Charlie. He has his own life too.'
Five minutes later I was pulling up to the Corner Coffee Shop. Yes that is the real name. The owners, long time family friends, couldn't decide on a name for the shop. The second location is called 'Not So On The Corner Coffee Shop' It's placed in middle area of the business mall. Generic, but yet sorta original. I checked my phone. 11:32. I'm late. Awesome.
I enter the small cafe, and look around. Some college students from the uni working away on homework. Aspiring authors, jittery from 4 cups of coffee, and a group of girls, that I recognize from school. Then I spot Ryan in our booth. Literally, it is the one we always get every time we come. Right by the window that shows the park. I came here a lot. I walk to the booth and sit quietly. He looks up from his phone.
"I didn't think you were going to show." He took a shallow drink from his coffee he had already ordered. "It is only 11:33." I said checking the clock again. "I'm barely late." At that Ms. Shannon skipped right up to the table. "Well hello there deary! When Ryan said he was meeting a pretty little lady, I didn't know he meant you!" I forced a smile. This might be harder then I thought. "Hello Ms. Shannon, yeah... we decided on a quick and friendly lunch to catch up." She smiled slightly. "Ok darling, can I get you the usual?" I nodded and and squeaked a yes. I turned back to Ryan, to see him smiling at me. I looked around a bit feeling awkward. I have never felt like this with him before. I was always so confident, and conversation was easy. I guess time changes people.
"So, how are your parents? I'm guessing happy, since you're home." He nods and goes on about his family. Ms. Shannon comes back with my coffee, and I mouth thank you. Making sure not to interrupt Ryan.
"I think we should go to the movies. Just like old times." I choked on my coffee a bit, but quickly recover. "Although that sounds, pleasant." I cringed a bit thinking about it. "I have to say no. That is actually why I came here. I'm sort of fine with you coming home and seeing us and everything. BUT we can't just go back to the whole relationship thing. You left and I had to get over you. So I did."
He nods again and takes a large sip of his coffee, then flags down Ms. Shannon for more. "Is it because of that Myren guy? Because I just don't see it." Astounded, and baffled. I shake my head. "No, it is not. I made this decision on my own for my own. And what Myren, and I have is none of your business." I take a small sip, and grab my bag. "Thanks for the coffee but I'm leaving now-" He reached out to grab my arm. "Wait, okay. I'm sorry, not my place. Just sit please."
Rolling my eyes I sigh and sit back down. "I didn't mean for it to come out like that. I just thought we could start over again since I'm back." I sigh again. Ms. Shannon comes over and refills his cup, gives me a sympathetic smile then leaves. "We can't. It's not fair to neither of us. Or my mothers heart for that matter." We both chuckle, then sigh. "If that is what you want then, okay. But that doesn't mean I won't keep trying every once in a while."
I lay down a five, then stand once again. I have to go now, but we can talk some other time." He also stands. We awkwardly hug, then exit the doors, and go to our respective cars. I get in and sit for a second. Breathing. My phone beeps. It's Myren.
'Hello, there. Ya know I'm having post concert depression.'
'Yeah, me too.'
'So whatcha up to pretty lady.' It sounds a lot better when he is saying it.
'Just had some coffee and stuff, heading home to do nothing.'
'Lori Im doing stuff. Things.'
'Please tell me you got that reference'
'Yes, I got the reference. You are an idiot.'
'So who did you have coffee with'
'Ryan, he wanted to meet and talk.'
'Just coffee?'
'Just coffee.'
'Gotta go, Dave just got here. I'll call you later'
'okay. bye.'
All in all it was only five minutes long, but it had already made me feel better. I turned my car on and drove home. Fully prepared to nap for the rest of the day.
And that is exactly what I did.
