"Alexis Dominique Patton if you keep messing with that dress I will hurt." I warned Lexi as she kept pulling her white and tan dress up.
"It's itchy." she whined, scratching her stockings. I sighed and helped her change into another pair of stockings.
"Better?"
"Yess." she said, spinning in a circle and watching her dress swish back and forth.
"Okay." I left Lexi in her room so I could change and eight minutes later, I still wasn't dressed. A white blouse and a pair of light jeans and no shoes. Checked my entire closet for my black flats but they were nowhere to be found. Checked under my bed and saw them laying on the floor next to my memory box, laughing at me.
Rolling my eyes, I grabbed both and opened the box. In it was my birth certificates and Alexis', family pictures, Alexis' baby pictures, my baby pictures, my mom's ring, my grandmother's necklace, my aunt and uncles' marriage certificate and Aunt Julia's wedding ring.
I pulled out a picture of my mom, Aunt Julia, Uncle Justin and I during Thanksgiving. The bottom right corner said 11/21/04. I was 8 and my curly hair was a wild halo around my face. My smile was wider than everyone else's. It was so wide you could see my missing bottom tooth but you could tell I was happy. I was loved.
I smiled softly and dropped the picture back in the box. I picked up my mom's ring and slipped in on my finger. Today felt like a good day to wear it.
After putting my shoes on, I put on some eyeliner and a little lip gloss. Not a lot. I'm not tryna impress anybody.. Right? I checked mysef in the mirror one last time before fixing Lexi's hair and grabbing the pumpkin bread.

Ring the doorbell, I told myself as I stood in the cold outside Tone's front door. I blew out a breath and let Lexi ring the doorbell. Tone's wife, Jessica, opened the door.
"Jazlyn. I almost forgot what you looked like." she said, mock frowning at me.
I smiled. "Sorry, Mrs.Tone."
She rolled her eyes and moved to let me in. "I hate when you call me that."
"No, you don't." I replied with a smile, handing her the pumpkin bread.
"Happy Thanksgiving."
"Happy Thanksgiving to you too." she replied. Alexis smiled at Jessica.
"Whose this pretty girl? Is that Alexis?" Jessica joked. Lexi laughed and nodded.
"Yes," she laughed. We walked through a short hallway and into the living room where Tone and Taylor were having a discussion with two guys while an older lady and three other women. They all turned to face us when we entered.
"Hey." Tone said, walking over to me. "How you doing?"
"I'm good. Happy Thanksgiving."
"Happy Thanksgiving to you, nappy." he smirked.
"Leave me alone." I turned my head to Alexis and shook her. "Say hi."
"Hi." she repeated.
"Everybody, this is Jazlyn. She headlines at the club." Tone said, introducing me to everyone.
"I've seen you before. You sing every weekend, right?" asked Jessica's older sister, Raven. I nodded.
"You have an amazing voice."
"Thank you." A beep sounded from the kitchen and Jessica rushed to the open doorway.
"Turkey's done! Time to eat!" she shouted behind her as she disappeared into the kitchen.
