Differential: Division Twelve
I had no way of telling time where I was. I was always in the dark, it could have been five in the morning and I would have known.
So that is why I say, the next time I was conscious, I had a revelation. With shaky fingers I reached to my stomach, smoothing my fingers along my belt.
It felt stupid to hope, because really, how would the Bræum miss this tiny but important detail?
When my finger hit the warm edge of my light dagger, a feeling of safety flowed through me.
I could get out. I could get away from these things.
It was then that I remembered what the Pastor had said, about the dagger releasing its light.
Before I could think about it I slipped the dagger out and dug it into my leg. I took in a sharp intake of breath.
But they the most amazing feeling flooded through me. The dagger released the light, driving it strait into my veins.
Suddenly the cloud over my senses lifted, and I had muscle movement back. I slid the knife from my leg, watching as the wound sealed shut.
My gifts still didn't work, but my cleared thoughts were racing. Forming a plan.
I couldn't let them take me again, they could find the dagger and then I would be royally screwed.
So instead the next time they came for me, I would fight back. They wouldn't expect it, and if I waited until they took the cuffs off then I would have my gifts back.
I hoped the God this would work.
It felt like the time stretched on forever. I was so wound up, making myself sick to the point where my stomach clenched painfully.
When I heard the noise of footsteps echoing down the hallway, I pushed my dagger into my belt again, preparing myself.
The first Bræum grabbed me, hauling me to my feet, and I wanted to recoil at the sudden darkness.
His friend undid my cuffs and I slid my arm not occupied by a Bræum to my dagger.
In a split second I had it out, driving it strait into the first Bræum's heart.
He let out a horrible screech, falling to his knees. I wanted to watch him fall, knowing that I did it, but the other was on me in an instant.
He had a hand around my neck, and for a split second my vision swarmed as did the adrenaline in my system.
Then I remembered. My gifts.
My hand shot out, and though I hated to touch him, I placed a hand on his forehead.
I sent a wave of Convection at him, burning his head from the inside out.
I gasped for air as he dropped me to the ground. I heaved, looking at his body. I did that, was all I could think.
I collected my thoughts, pushing myself out of the door.
The hallway extended to the left, as far as I could see. The right side was the same.
Suddenly, a blaring alarm screeched through the air, and I saw a distant door open down the left hallway.
I immediately turned knowing it was the Bræum. I darted right, taking off down the long hallway.
Knowing I could run almost the speed of light, the Bræum were much faster. Light always moved the faster, just to find the darkness was already waiting for it.
