Clank.
"For Christ's sake, Phil!"
You took a deep breath and turned over to the direction of the noise. Pulling down the blankets from your face, you looked around the room. The sunrays waved at you from the gaps in the blinds. Your jacket and purse hung on the back of one of the office chairs. Your alarm clock read ten thirty in the morning.
A series of yelps from downstairs brought your attention back to the closed office door. You yawned and figured it was time to start the day.
A few minutes later you found yourself in the kitchen with Dan and Phil standing around a newspaper on the floor. The two broke out into grins the moment you looked at them.
"Morning, Y/N!" Phil said with a wave. His other hand held a spatula.
You stared at the newspaper. "You seem to have dropped that?"
"No, no, that's supposed to be there." Dan assured you. He gestured to Phil. "We have a surprise for you."
"Homemade British pancakes," Phil announced with bravado and pulled out a plate of pancakes hidden behind him. "Your favorite."
You stepped around the newspaper and went in for a hug. "Aw, thanks bro."
"Bro? Are you getting all American on me already?" He mocked with an American accent then handed you the plate and fork that you took with gratitude.
The pancakes were of a tan shade and decorated with various fruits and whipped cream. You forked some of the fluffy deliciousness into your mouth and munched away. "Hey, I was only there for a few years." You continued to chew without a second thought until you saw Dan watching you. "What is it?"
Dan chuckled. "I've never seen anyone like pancakes as much as Phil."
"Of course, we're related after all." You replied as you waved around a piece of pancake on your fork. You ignored it as Phil ruffled your hair.
Phil gave you another pancake then started to usher you out of the kitchen. "You can go pick a show to watch in the lounge. We'll be joining you in a sec."
Once you settled yourself on the black plush couch and had American Horror Story ready to go on the television screen, you heard Dan and Phil's voices drifting from the kitchen.
"Oh thank goodness Y/N didn't see that on the floor." Phil sounded relieved.
"Please, I doubt she would've cared about a crack on the floor." Dan replied.
"I wouldn't be setting a good example if she knew that I made it by dropping the pan." Phil insisted.
You rolled your eyes and continued to focus on your pancakes. It was impressive enough that he whipped up the fluffy cakes. Besides, you were already a witness to more than enough of Phil's clumsy incidents when you were younger. You looked up when Dan and Phil plopped down on the couch on either side of you. Dan reached over for the remote and started the episode. The three of you watched on with stacks of pancakes.
When the episode was over and plates were empty Phil jumped up and declared "Up, up, time to go on an adventure."
You squinted at him, feeling the inklings of an oncoming food coma. "But I'm sleepy."
Dan jutted a thumb at you. "I'm with your sister on this one."
"I'll treat you to fish and chips." Phil bargained.
You stared at him then nodded slowly. "Deal."
------
After a ride on the tube and waiting in line you found yourself inside the Tower Bridge with Dan and Phil. Specifically you were trying to take a picture on the transparent glass walkway between the two towers.
"Come, sit, sit," you patted the open space next to you on the glass floor. The space was over an opening in the steel reinforcements of the tower. A drop below would result in a collision with a car then a splash into the Thames.
"Uh, sorry sis, not feeling the plummet to my death." Phil said while he took care to stand on reinforced areas.
You pouted. "Boo."
"Please don't die. I wouldn't know what to tell mum." His wide pale blue eyes widened.
"Well, you can tell her exactly what's happening." Dan said as he took out his phone and aimed the camera at you. "Ready? Say death."
"I'm not going to say that," you said and posed. The camera clicked and, much to Phil's horror, you jumped up to look at the picture. The glass underneath you held solid in the meantime. "Thanks, it's pretty nice."
"Can we please go to the Eye now?" Phil pleaded. "I'm trying not to imagine Final Destination scenarios."
"Oh, god, Phil did you hear that crack?" Dan feigned a cry.
"Dan!"
------
"My arms aren't long enough," you said in a disappointed tone.
The three of you were now inside one of the London Eye's ascending capsules. All of your backs stood to the rest of London and the Thames. You attempted to take a selfie but it was difficult with the height difference between you and Dan and Phil.
"Want me to take it?" Dan asked. "I'm Dan, the selfie stick."
You stuck your tongue out and handed him your phone. He snapped the photo with little effort. "We have to take one with the Snapchat puppy filter too," you insisted.
"For some reason everyone wanted us to try that," Phil remarked and shrugged. He leaned in for another photo.
"Oh, alright." Dan gave in and posed.
Unfortunately the app's filter only worked on two people at once. Only you and Dan adorned the puppy ears while Phil remained earless. The three of you wore goofy faces for the picture. Dan bursted out laughing at the results while Phil pouted about how he lacked ears. You thought of a solution and sketched out ears for Phil on the app. Satisfied with the results, you saved the edited picture and pocketed your phone. When you looked up you noticed that Phil ended up on the other side of the capsule while Dan looked out at the scenery behind you.
He leaned forward on the metal railing with his hands. "This sounds a little odd, but why haven't we met before?"
You joined him and took in the details of the city. The blue and orange gradient sky stretched beyond the horizon. Businesses, hotels, and landmarks decorated the ground beneath you. "I attended university in America so I haven't been back too often. I was busy whenever you two were there as well."
"Isn't that a big jump? The change in lifestyle, mannerisms, environment, and so forth."
"Of course. I wasn't too happy with life here so I went to try something new." You paused and turned to him. "Have you felt that way before?"
Dan smiled at you. "Yeah, I have."
