She waited for him in the hospitals blue plastic chairs, as he signed all the papers
and sat down beside her. The waiting room was almost empty in A&E, so luckily they
didn't have to wait long and no matter how many times he told her that she didn't
need to wait with him, she stayed while he was called into see the doctor.
She had always been fascinated by blood and she had had good enough grades to
go to medical school, but she had followed Nate here to study science. Now she stared
with fascination as they pieced together his hand, set bones, stitched and cleaned the
skin, then gentle placed his hand in as blue cast.
She smiled at him as she took the doctors pen and wrote as big and boldly as she
could ‘Toni was here' and ‘caused by her' across his cast. They giggled together as they
walked back to the car, but otherwise they managed to stay in companionable silence.
Once they were seated in the car and heading back to Toni's house she broke the
quiet to utter a question that voiced a thought that hadn't even crossed his mind.
