“I can’t believe she would do that to me? Are you sure it’s her? You can’t even see
her face, it’s not her. I can’t be her. When was this? Is the time stamp correct?
Obviously not, she wouldn’t have done this less than a month after we got engaged,
would she?” And it went on and on. Toni sat beside him patiently as he tried to console
himself while he stared intently at the pictures she had given him.
She had waited just over a week to print the photos, but she was too much of a
coward to give them to him herself, so she discretely hired a courier to slip them under
their front door in a brown envelope.
“I’m sorry Nate, everything is going to be alright. At least you found out about it
now rather than a few years down the track.
“I suppose you’re right.” That was the first full sentence he had uttered in the last
hour. “I need to talk to her.”
“Speak of the devil and he shall appear.” Cade said from the kitchen door as a car
pulled into the driveway.
The second she walked through the door Nate’s whole body stiffened. “Nate is
everything okay?” She said as she leaned down to kiss his cheek. He moved away from
her and for a second there was a glimpse of pain in her eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“I think we need to leave them to talk.” Toni said as she moved towards Cade. He
motioned her through the door and together they left the house. Toni’s last look back
was to see them sitting opposite each other looking at the photos and Ali was white as
a sheet. “Let’s get something for lunch.” Cade said as he swung the car out of the driveway.
Toni had strategically left Cade’s face out of every one of the pictures and now her
only hope was that Ali wouldn’t mention it was him.
