The first week of school felt like it whizzed by. For the first time in a long time, Phil wasn't being bullied. Well, not yet, anyway. He wasn't quite ready to celebrate that yet.

Phil, Greg, Mia, and Lainey had become pretty good friends lately. Phil was still surprised that Greg never asked about his silence, but he guessed Greg assumed he was mute and didn't want to be rude.

Mia was such a sweetheart. She helped Phil navigate through the school and made sure he was always part of a conversation.

Lainey was really cool in Phil's opinion. She was pretty openly bisexual, which Phil admired. She also had great taste in music. Lainey was also really nice and pretty funny, like Greg.

Well, Greg wasn't 'nice' you
could say. He was honest, and always said what was on his mind. His sense of humor was a bit...dark at times, but none of his friends minded.

Then there was Dan. Phil wasn't quite sure how to think of him. Dan was also openly bisexual, but he seemed to lean more towards girls than guys. Mia said his personality was alright sometimes. Phil saw Dan as a really nice guy. He and Phil got their assignment done quickly, and Dan did it all happily with him.

Dan was also hot. God, Phil stole a glance at him every chance he got. Did he mention Dan was hot? If not, he is. 'He' as in Dan, 'is' as in is hot.

Anyway, the weekend went by quickly too. Phil texted Mia a lot. They were becoming pretty good friends. Phil sighed when he began scrolling through some of his old contacts from his old school. Oh, how he missed those days. Phil had but one contact in his favorites. A number he'd never call or text again.

'Mum' it read. Phil shut his phone off and didn't text anyone, or even open his phone, for the rest of the night.

The next morning, Phil woke up to his alarm. Monday already. He managed to avoid his dad thus far, hopefully his luck would hold up.

"Philip!" His father yelled. Phil winced at how loud his father was. Tears formed in his eyes and nothing bad had happened, yet. That was anxiety for you.

He opened his door after getting dressed and trudged downstairs. "Philip, hurry up." His father said impatiently. Phil got downstairs and saw a man standing with his father. He was a burly looking man who was bald and wearing a suit with his arms crossed. Phil stood awkwardly with his hands in front of him. "Thank you. Anyway, Philip, Jonathan. Jonathan my, mute, son Philip."

"Pleasure," Jonathan said and shook Phil's hand. Phil nodded in response.

"Philip, tonight we'll be having a company dinner at Jonathan's. There will be important business representatives there, so I expect you to be on your beat behavior, and be home by six, understood?" Phil's father explained. Phil nodded. "Good. Now off to school with you." He grabbed his bag and ran out of the house.

He climbed on to the bus and sighed. Phil hated going to his father's business dinners. He couldn't speak, and no one ever knew sign language. Phil had learned it over the summer.

In the heat of the moment, someone could say something. Something that wasn't meant to be said or should be said. Something secret. Phil could never risk that. Written words gave you the chance to think before you communicate. You could change your words before they're perceived by someone else in case you don't like what's written.

"Hey, Phil!" Mia said as she sat next to Phil. He jumped, but then smiled at her and waved. "So, yesterday, I was texting one of my friends, Amy, not sure if you know her, but anyway she told me that Dan's got a new girlfriend." Phil looked at her, eyes wide.
