The following three days, I was so on edge, between late night talks with my ghost friend and watching out for crazy jocks, my grades kinda went down the toilet just a little. Feeling the pressure of Jack's warnings on me, Saturday finally arrived, bringing Halloween to town. I spent most of my day preparing my costume, getting a doctors uniform from the boxes.
Now came the hard part...
"Are you sure you don't mind this?" My mom asked, holding a paintbrush dripping in pig's blood. I nodded, keeping my eyes and mouth pinned shut. Hearing her chuckle, I felt the blood splatter on the front of my uniform, spraying just a little on my face. Turning to have my back sprayed, I turned my thoughts to tonight, and what might happen. "All done!" My mom chirped, allowing me to turn around. Staring at myself in the mirror, I couldn't help grinning at the kid staring right back at me. The ocean blue uniform had large splashes of red across the chest, making my usually friendly smile have some bit of insanity to it. Turning to my mom, I felt my grin grow wider. "It's perfect." I said. "It's just missing that last touch." My mom nodded, pushing the bucket of blood towards me carefully. "Do what ya gotta do, kiddo." Laughing, I dunked my hands into the warm substance, cringing at the feel of the thickness of it, and nearly gagging at the smell.
Pennies and seashells... What a interesting smell...
Thanking my mom, I let the blood sit on my hands for a few minutes, then dried them off, leaving a light tinge of red leading up to my elbows. Grabbing my bag, I headed for the front door, when my mom called me. "Quin, remember that I'm not gonna be around when you and your friends get here. Your father and brother are up with his mother in the mountains. I'm not gonna be around until probably 9'o'clock tomorrow, so don't forget to lock up when you go to bed tonight." "Yes ma'am." I called, opening the door. "Love ya!" Rushing out the door, I headed to the front of the high school, where my friends waited for me.
Later...
"Hey guys!" I said, approaching the curb where Baldy confronted me before. "What's up?" Victor shrugged his shoulders, his normally brown hair now bright green, and his face covered in that famous grinning face paint. "We're waiting on Ali." Ivan swung his plastic scythe around, making me dance away. "Watch it with that thing, Cabrera! I would like to keep my kneecaps, thank you very much." Ivan laughed, his voice muffled behind the skeletal mask he wore. "Hey guys! Sorry I'm late." Ali said, jogging up to us, wearing a ninja suit with cat ears on top of her head. "Look what the cat dragged in." I joked, earning a hiss and a light punch to my gut. "Watch it, Doc. I'm still capable of kicking your butt." Laughing, we walked down the street, discussing which houses to hit for the best kind of candy. Later, after going to five houses, and receiving 50 cents, two Snickers, and a jumbo KitKat bar each, we stopped by a old oak tree, panting from the walking we have done. "Why don't we hit up the Myers house?" Ivan said, removing his mask. "They always give out lots of candy, then we can head to Quin's house." Ali nodded, a sour look crossing her face. "Okay, what's up with you, A?" I asked, crossing my blood soaked arms across my chest. "The Myers are...Well...They're the town rich people. The kids are total jerks too." Victor said, leaning against the trunk of the tree. "You've met them already." I shook my head in disbelief.
The Myer family? Seriously? Did I land in a plot for a horror movie?
"Well, well, well. If it isn't Three Rejects and a Southern Boy." The all to familiar voice of Blondie sang out behind me. Turning around, I saw her in a nurses uniform that was three sizes too small, with her brother dressed up as a convict. "Ewwww... It's Sarah and Oscar." Alisea groaned, twitching her hair in annoyance. Sarah ignored Ali, although I could see she held her tongue pretty hard. "What's up, Roid freak?" Victor taunted, getting Oscar to take a step forwards in anger. I stepped into Oscar's view, noticing stitches on his jaw. "How's the face feeling, buddy?" I asked cooly, making him freeze in his tracks. The six of us stood frozen, like wax museum dummies on the loose. "Come on guys," Ali said, breaking the stand off. "Let's go." Walking away, I noted that Sarah had green eyes too, just like Oscar. Pulling the three of them to the side after getting out of sight, I threw them against the trunk of a nearby tree. "Owwww... Watch it,Q. I think I hit my tail." Ali whined, rubbing her butt. "Shut it." I snapped, surprising everyone, even myself. "What the hell is your problem with them, and why are they after me?" I glared at the three of them, expecting a answer.
"Fine..." Victor sighed, rubbing his neck. "Let's start with the basics. Those two are the Myer twins. The brother is a star lineman for the football team." "And the sister is the head cheerleader. She's also Ms.Albany state for three years now." Ali spat, cracking her knuckles. "Yea. The brother's been caught using some high quality steroids, while the sister was caught..... Influencing the judges for beauty contests." Ivan said, dragging his scythe's handle through the dirt. "I really wouldn't have cared about the sister," Ali said, eyes burning. "I don't even like those stupid contests. It's the fact that they had mommy and daddy but their way out of the problems. It's just so.. Gah!" Ali screamed, kicking the ground. "They must be looking at you because they want to see you as a threat to making mommy and daddy unhappy." Victor said, pulling a toothpick out of his pocket, and sticking it in his mouth.
And the stereotypes grow larger... Oi...
"Listen, let's forget about those guys, and have some fun!" I said, trying to bring the mood back into the group. "It's Halloween, so come on! We still got something to do back at my house, remember?" The three of them looked at each other, then back at me. "Fine," said Ali, grinning a little. "But only because I want some of your candy afterwards." "It's a deal." I laughed. "Now, which way to the Myer house? I'm hungry for some candy!"
