Nameless

I had been sitting patiently atop the stone wall that rimmed The Arx, avoiding being seen as well as waiting for Lidia Theron to return from seeking.

I was eager to see my friend again, her scan of the Living Realm had been longer than usual.

Lidia was a Level Five Seeker. She was an underling to all the other Levels, the lowest rank of Seeker, but was excelling fast towards Council status. She was, by far, the friendliest of all the Seekers in my opinion. Although, I was sure, like the rest before her, she would realize how pathetic the rest of us Between were and cease to be my only friend. I was dreadfully awaiting for this to happen, but in all the time she had been a Seeker - which seemed pretty long without me knowing the precise time - she had never once looked at me with disdain or superiority, even as she became the leader of the Fives.

She was just Lidia, the beautiful, auburn haired, brown eyed girl I'd met a long time ago. Of course, now she had more color as all Seekers gained when travelling back and forth to the world of the living, collecting the life energy of the realm's inhabitants.

That was definitely one of the things I had envied the most about the Seekers.Their hair was able to shine and bend with the colors of light. Their eyes were able to shine with an array of colors, to convey what they felt when they smiled, and their cheeks were able to  color pink with emotions. Their skin was sun-kissed and smooth looking. They were vibrant. They were the closest thing to life the Between would ever be near for the duration of their sentences. They were what I would anxiously wait for every day after their routine inspection of the earth. This could take days, or months depending on the number of escaped souls they had to capture and send to the Underworld. For the past century, the total seemed to have grown steadily in number with each scan.

Still, I patiently waited for my friend and the others. For the wonderful, rare glimpse of color I cherished each time they paraded into The Arx.

There is only a select few Seekers. One must have an excellent amount of life energy to become one, for life energy is what gives the souls their strength. The Between, dull and lifeless, lack an enormous amount of this energy because they never travel to earth where life energy is plentiful. Only a few souls that are sent to Purgatory had been able to somehow hang on to a large majority of their energy. A hand full of them had been Psychics when they were alive or merely sensitive to the supernatural. Those souls were offered by the ruler of Purgatory, the Lord of all Seekers, to join the Levels. Most souls accepted the offer as opposed to facing the struggles of working as a Between.

When a Seeker has completed each Level of service, they are considered finished their sentence and allowed access to Paradise to make way for the new recruits. Lidia was mastering her gift of speed quickly, her color growing richer each day. She was practically sprinting towards Paradise. She would soon leave me. I was thinking this sad thought while kicking my dangling legs lazily over the edge of the wall when I, along with all the other Between, heard them arrive.
