I was, as per usual, sitting in my corner of the Compendium, diligently reading up on the ever so important coffee.

As it turned out, I had come across it before, but I only skimmed over the Living Realm's trades a couple of times, never really finding it altogether interesting, and so over looked some of the merchandise.

But as for the actual beverage, it was a really amazing commodity. These tiny little coffee beans could stimulate the mind for a short while giving humans energy.

I toyed with the idea of recommending the Seekers to bring some back for the Between so that they could better commune with the living, but quickly realized how idiotic that sounded.

Anyway, it could also be dangerous if misused. Some writer even died from over-stimulation of it. Who would've thought?

It seems an odd thing to become so excited over, but a new subject to learn, for me, was like a gift of sorts. Whenever I discovered something new, I devoured any information I could on it, filling myself with much needed enthusiasm to help me pass my time. It was as if I felt that by learning everything I could about the Living Realm, I could somehow become alive myself. It was a stupid notion, of course.

Of all the the subjects I pored over, what interested me most was what the humans called the paranormal, and how the living always tried to connect with us. The handwritten files on the subject described a time when the Gods revealed themselves to mankind, helping them build structures such as the Pyramids, showing them fire, helping them survive and so on.

The humans were grateful and in turn worshiped the Gods, however some sought to enslave and exploit the powers of both God and Demon for their own personal gain. The Gods, of course, easily dispelled any attempt the humans made to bind them and their power, but the Demons saw opportunity for an uprising. They let the humans believe they were in control of the binding, but slowly took them over, possessing them and secretly gaining a stronger hold on the Living Realm.

This was a major contributing factor to the war that came to be. The Gods decided from then on that it was best to limit contact with the Living Realm, and simply to observe from afar.

I had been surprised to see the elegant scrawling of the God, Morpheus. He had made a statement on the file, something I had never before seen or expected a God to do. This told me that the decision was a defining one. In it, Morpheus wrote:

To the Lord and Seekers of Purgatory,

While it saddens me beyond words to hide our presence from the Living Realm, I have seen into the human mind, and therefore know the truth of its heart.

Greed is ever present in both, and is all consuming to those who follow her beckon. This materialism - This sense of wanting, I have felt within their dreams. Their subconscious cannot lie, and their will is so easily bent. It is best for us all - the humans most especially- that we do not impede on their growth as a species any longer. They will become dependent on our power, and then disdainful of said dependency. They will desire to wield such power for themselves, and thus another war will surely ensue. While none of us truly understand what awaits us in Paradise, one thing is for certain; humans are to be protected by us, to be guided by us. Their souls, as many as possible, must find Paradise. As of now, by encouraging relations with humankind, we are failing to protect them, to keep them pure.

We have battled enough - lost enough to such greed. Let us find peace now, and allow the humans to find the strength to survive on their own. Let us watch and praise their accomplishments, and learn from the mistakes they will absolutely commit. Perhaps, in time, when they have become greater than their longings for power, we shall extend our hand once more.
