Chapter 13:

I must have dozed off without noticing, because I opened my eyes and found my head misty from sleep. I felt something heavy and warm on my belly. I looked down, and saw a human infant on my stomach. I could just imagine Mate's reaction if he saw me like this.

I leaned towards Pup and smelled her, making sure she was fine. She smelled around my age, but I sensed a tiny child in her. A child like that needed a mother, an alpha female. And as I haven't seen this one's alpha female yet, and since I now the male is crap, I decided that me and My Mate were taking over the job.

Now, the thing that would make me feel complete, would be my pack, My Mate, and some breakfast... oh yeah... Breakfast sounds really good. Maybe I could eat Pup's father for breakfast. That way I could claim her, and I would no longer be happy and she would no longer have a crappy alpha male. Everyone but my breakfast would be happy, but then, my breakfast in life isn't a very happy character... I don't think that dying would change much... maybe it would even be better for him. He wouldn't have to think those unpleasant thoughts, worry about anything, or feel upset. Yep. Definitely an improvement in death for him.

Pup groaned.

I instantly nudged her with my nose, “Is something wrong?”

She opened her eyes slowly, then we had eye-contact.

It was odd. If any wolf had done this to me, I would have thought it a threat or challenge, but with her it felt polite, like the right thing to do. I think that means that humans have different body language to wolves.

I curled myself further around her, keeping her warm. She needed to get to know the rest of the pack. The pack needed to accept her. She needed to learn to hunt. She still needed to do so much... none of which we could do in this thing that smells of metal that had no opening big enough for either of us to fit through.

That's when it came to me.

She could make that opening appear again. The opening that was big enough for even me. How had she done that? How do I get her to do it again?

Those thoughts were coursing through my head when someone came to us, making a weird noise, a noise you normally only hear birds make.

Were these odd creatures related to birds too? That would mean I could eat them, right?

The man approached us.

He made funny noises. They sounded mean. Like he was getting pleasure at someone else's expense. I saw Pup redden, and I could feel her hurt.

I snarled at the man who was hurting my Pup, though I wasn't quite sure about what her was doing.

That made him make that mean sound some more.

If it wasn't for this metal thing between you and me, I would silence you quickly and cleanly. That way I would get my breakfast, and you could no longer make that awful noise that's upsetting Pup. Sounds reasonable, right? I achieve two things, maybe more, who knows, by doing one simple action. Sinking my sharp teeth into your soft and vulnerable neck that you are displaying so nicely to me at this very moment.

The man stopped making the noise enough to make a small opening in the metal around me and Pup to shove something in. It was meat.

Instantly my mouth started watering, but I had to think of Pup.

I shoved the meat in her direction, a clear sign that she should dig in first. She made an odd face, then shoved it back towards me saying something that sounded like “Nothanks,” though I couldn't quite figure why she would sound so ungrateful. Anyway, if she didn't want it, there's no holding me back now!

I lunged onto the meat and swallowed it in one gulp. That was it? But I'm still hungry! What pitiful animal did the humans kill to get that amount of meat, I mean, I get more off a mouse! Okay, maybe that's slightly exaggerated, but you get the point.

Pup crawled right up to the metal, and put held it in her hands. I bet that she would create that hole now.

I was wrong!

All she did, was hold the metal. Man that's infuriating. I mean, she's holding it in those amazing hands (at least, that's what my mother called them) that are so clever and can do so much, and she doesn't use them properly?

I could have growled at her, only that she would have then become even more scared, and I couldn't do that to her.

Suddenly a pain exploded in my chest.

What was happening to me?

What was this?

It was like nothing I had ever experienced. The pain was so intense.

I tried not to snarl for Pup's sake, but I don't think I would manage that.

I kept my mouth clamped firmly shut. Alas, I could already feel the snarl forming in my throat, longing to get out. The pain in my chest intensified, and I noticed that my sense of sound, smell and my vision was blurring over.

I wouldn't survive this. I was sure of it.

I started seeing starts.

I'm sorry Pup.

I'm sorry, Mate!

Mate...
