chapter 8

Layla cries almost every morning before the sun rises. For the past few days, natsu grunts then struggles out the bed and over to her. Half a sleep, I'll watch him cradle her in his arms and rock her back to sleep. But he's done that for a month or two now and he's having trouble waking up in the mornings when it's time for us to get up.

Layla starts crying again. Natsu covers his head with a pillow and grunts. I crawl over him and stumble over to Layla's crib. She cries and cries till I lift her up out of the crib and hold her close to me. I look out the window over natsu and see a small light coming from the horizon.

Quickly but quietly I make my way outside with Layla in my arms. I sit with her in my lap on the edge of the side walk with my feet in the canal. "Look Layla!" I whisper to her, "the Suns rising! The sun is the closest star to earth, but it isn't the biggest. There are bigger stars in the little shapes in the sky at night. "

Layla giggles and reaches her little hands out to the sky. I smile at her and watch as the sky lights up.

With Layla in my hands, I creep up to the bed where natsu was snoring away. I place Layla in her little chair so she can watch. I tiptoe over to natsu, turn to Layla with a finger over my smiling mouth, then continue creeping to him. I pull out a marker and get on the bed, hanging over him. As well as I could I draw a little heart on his cheek but before I could finish I feel a stopping arm wrap around my waist and see his eyes open.

"Morning sunshine!" He says. He pulls me down on to him. I look over at Layla, who was laughing her little heart away. Natsu kisses my cheek then let's me go. Natsu picks up Layla and puts her on his shoulder. She giggles and holds onto his hair. "Ow!' Natsu yelps when she pulls on his hair. She laughs some more.

He sets her down in her high chair and puts a bowl of baby food infront of her. Natsu takes the spoon from the bowl and tries to feed her. Layla hits the spoon away and out of his hands. "Well, if she doesn't want that... What does she want?" Natsu asks, looking at me. I shrug, "we can just feed her when she gets fussy. Let's take her with us to the guild hall this time, I'm sure everyone wants to see her!"

Even though it's been about two months, we haven't taken Layla to the guild hall yet. Meira comes to the house to baby sit when we leave. The only people in the guild who have seen Layla is Erza, levy, Meira, and obviously Natsu and I. Gray as seen her, but never officially met her yet, which will change today.

I change Layla into a cute little pink dress and some white legans with pink slide on shoes. I fix her little salmon colored hair with my hand then hand her to Natsu. He puts her on his shoulders and we finally get out the front door.

Natsu jumps into the guild hall with a big smile, "hey guys! Long time no see!" Layla giggles and climbs her way onto Natsus head. Everyone in the guild makes their way over to him and Layla to greet them. I stand with Natsu. "Oh she's so cute!" People say as they finally get the chance to see her up close. I go to sit with Meira by the bar.

"How's Natsu?" Meira asks. I smile at her, "Layla sometimes cries if Natsu isn't around. She loves him so much and Natsu loves her. Is so cute!"

Meira rests her head in her hands and looks over at the crowd around Natsu and Layla. " I'm so happy for you two! I can't believe it's been almost two years sense you two have gotten together and you already have a little baby girl!" I nod. Gray sits down next to me and grunts. "What's wrong gray?" Meira asks, handing him a drink. He takes a few big gulps then looks over at Natsu, "I'm not exactly a baby lover..." He says negatively.

"Well it's my baby and you should be at least a little happier for me and Natsu..." I say with an angry tone. He looks over at Layla and Natsu, then to me. Gray gives me a weak smile then takes another few drinks.

"Natsu!!" I yell, grabbing his and grays attention. "Come here a second!!"

Natsu runs over with Layla on his shoulder. "Let me see her for a moment, " I lightly take Layla from him and then hand her to gray. Gray looks at her with a startled face. He held her under the arms and stretched out his arms so she wasn't close up to him.

Layla stared at him with a blank face. "What do you want me to do.." He asks dully. Natsu laughs, "you suck at this!"

"Shut up hot breath!" Gray yells back. Layla starts crying. Gray panics and tries to give her back to me. "No gray! Calm her down a little. Rock her back and forth. Cradle her."

"Uhh... Yea... Okay.." He says unsure. Gray holds Layla closer to him and cradles her. Her cries became softer. She lifted her little hands to touch his face but couldn't reach. Gray takes her under the arms again and holds her closer to his face this time.

She reaches out her little hands and grabs onto his nose. Layla starts giggling and Natsu starts laughing.

"Can I put her down now?" Gray asks with a funny voice. I shake my head, laughing a little. "Common gray! It's cute!" I laugh at him.

Everyone around us laughs and awes him, including Layla. "That's gray!" I say to her, petting her little head. "Can you say gray?" Layla looks at me then at gray. "Common, can you say gray?" I ask again with a cute voice.

"I don't know Lucy, don't you want your kid to say mommy or daddy as their first word or something.." Gray says, still with the funny voice sense Layla hasn't let go of his nose yet. "Oh don't worry, we've tried this a million times, she hasn't even gotten close to mama or dada yet." I say.

"Gray!" Layla exclaims.

The room goes silent. Layla giggles and says it again, "gray! G- gray!!"

"Hey! How'd you do that?" Natsu yells at gray. "I dunno! It's your kid!!" Gray yells back. I take Layla from grays hands and put her close to my face. "Mama? Can you say mama?" I ask her.

"Gray! Gray!" She giggles.

"Well it was worth a try huh?" Meira laughs a little. I can't believe she actually said her first few words! But most of all I can't believe her first word wasn't mommy!! DX
