Chapter 2: Escaped

There was a loud noise of someone pounding at my door. I stood up from my bed and unlocked the door. Before I could turn the knob, my stepmother barged into my room.

"You aren't even ready yet!"

"All right, I'll go change now."

"You had better be quick! If the prince arrives and you're still not done, I'm not going to be the one to help sort things out! Do you understand?"

"Yes, yes..."

When she had gone out, I quickly packed my clothes into a velvet bag along with other things that I valued most. I would never be here again anyway. I hurriedly changed into a sleeveless, blue gown and walked towards my mirror with the bag in my hands.

I looked around my room for the last time. Then, I pushed aside my mirror and stared into the dark corridor, which was a secret passageway that led to the backyard. In order to avoid suspicion, I pulled the mirror back into place and started walking through the dim aisle.

In less than a minute, I had arrived in the backyard and there they were: my horse and my loyal maid. I made my way towards them while keeping an eye on my surroundings to see if anyone was around.

"Now that you have arrived, should we begin our journey?"

"Yes, we don't want to be caught. The whole plan will be ruined."

She helped me onto my horse and climbed onto it after me. It was probably the first time I had ridden a horse with somebody else behind me, but that wasn't the main point. I looked up at the castle and hoped that no one saw us.

We rode off into the starry night and as soon as we were out of eyeshot, I heard the sound of trumpets blow. The prince must have arrived and my stepmother should have been running up the stairs by then, towards my room.

I could imagine my stepmother's horrified face when she saw my empty room. My father would be terribly shocked and call his guards to search for me, but they would never find me or even see me again.

We continued on our journey and I never looked back again. I could have become emotional if I did look back as it would certainly remind me of my father. He had been a kind father to me but I had never considered the things he did without my knowing.

If my father hadn't kept me in the dark, this wouldn't have happened. My marriage wouldn't have been arranged and I would still be in the castle living a usual life but since my father had done so, I had no choice but to escape the castle and never see him again.

Our journey was a quiet one until my maid, Layla, suddenly spoke up.

"So, what's the plan?"

"I have no idea. I never even thought of that..."
