Chapter 5

With steaming coffee in his hands, he turned back to his computer as Eridan set up his area. "Welcome to your new home, the largest waste of time and money in the world."

"This project is going to make everything eaiser for everyone! How could such a supposedly smart person say something as ignorant as that?"

Sollux put his coffe down and blew on it. "For your information, I am a smart person. I'm one of the smartest people alive on this pityful excuse for a planet. We'd be better off working on a space program to get us off this planet and onto another. Not this shit. For something to make a difference, to do good, it first needs to fucking work, smartass."

Eridan plugged in his monitor. "It will work eventually, otherwise why would we be doing this?"

Sollux took a long drink and sighed. "We'll find a way to make it work after its use has expired. Things are stupid like that."

Eridan's computer buzzed to life. "Well, there's no use in waiting around for us to rot. Lets get going. He pulled up his recent research and started browsing through it. All of it was minor, but every bit counted. Every, single, piece. His head felt heavy. He was tired but glad. He would finally get to make a difference.

A crashing sound woke him up. He looked around slowly to see what caused it. A large metal box had fallen on the floor. Sollux was up out of his chair, pacing. "What did you do?" Eridan asked.

Sollux just shook his head. Eridan checked his phone. There were six messages from his friend asking where he was and if he was okay, saying something had happened. Saying people were attacking each other. "What's going on?"

Sollux sat back in his chair and pulled up a video.

The computer screen showed a street with a apartment complex on one side, and a bowling alley on the other. "This is live footage being captured from one of the city's security cameras. This is happening right now."

As he watched the footage, a man ran across the road and was confronted by another person. He faltered for a moment, then a flash of steel appeared as he smashed an object into the others head. The figure stumbled back, but didn't fall to the ground. The man no longer paid any attention to him, but continued running across the street, until he disappeared from view. The figure stumbled after him.

Sollux switched the feed. It now showed a house surronded by people, some trying to break down doors, others attempting to go through windows. At the top of the house through a window, Eridan could see a boy with a gun, pointing it at something out of sight. A shot rang out, then the video turned off.

"Why did you turn it off? Keep going." Eridan asked.

Sollux started typing on the computer, but the video did not return. "The city is shutting them off. Must not be wanting anyone to be seeing this."

Eridan got up and started for the elevator. "I need to go, I need to find someone."

"Who?"

Eridan touched the button to call the elevator. "A friend, I need to find her." As the elevator opened, all the lights turned off. The elevator button went dark.

"The building's power's been shut off. It's not going to work."

"Don't we have a fuckin staircase or something?" He looked around, and saw a door. "What's over there?"

Sollux sighed. "That's where the matienence stairway is."

Eridan went over and tried the door. It wouldn't budge. "Where's the key? There has to be a key."
