Chapter 27
There were no infected in the lot, so Eridan decided to take the prybar with him and go to the entryway. The entire street was empty. Not a soul. The sound of the car didn't seem to have drawn any.
"Any?" Sollux had walked up behind Eridan.
"No, nothing." Eridan sighed.
A shot rang through the air, causing both of them to flinch.
"Well, shit. That's a fucking racket." Sollux said. "If that was going on while we were inside, all the infected could have been drawn to it. Makes sense, doesn't it? Hear something while looking for food, go look for the source."
"We should go check it out. See what's going on." Eridan began walking out on to the street.
"Why?" Sollux asked. "They might be insane and shoot us, and I'm not ready to be capped by a overconfident jackass yet. Plus we need to keep trying to get a cure for the disease. It's by far the most important thing to do right now."
"What's the point in finding a cure if there's no one left?" Eridan kept walking. "Also, like you said, infected are probably heading there as well."
Another shot came to their ears. Eridan walked into an alley on the opposite side of the street from the lab. Sollux sighed, and a third gunshot moved him to follow Eridan. They jogged down the path, and stopped at the end of it to peer out on to the street. A single infected was heading down the street, following something.
Sollux pointed to it. "There's one."
"Let's follow it." Eridan said. "It could lead us to them."
"We only need one infected." Sollux said softly. "We don't need to go farther."
"Why shouldn't we?"
"We don't need to find more shit we don't need to see." Sollux kept his gaze at the infected.
Several rapid, higher pitched shots made themselves know, and the infected walked into a sidestreet. Eridan gestured after it.
"As long as I hear bullets, I'm going." He started after the infected.
The shots paused for a few seconds, then continued. Eridan sprinted to the sidestreet and looked for the infected. It was gone, and the shots stopped.
Sollux caught up to him. "It's gone? Shit."
Eridan just shook his head.
"Eridan... Come on-" A door to one of the hosues flew open, and five people came out, one being carried. They rushed across the street, and into another house.
"They're alive, I told you." Eridan ran after them, Sollux following.
Eridan got to the door, and paused. What if they did shoot him? Sollux might be right.
"If we're going to go in, don't make me stand around for it." Sollux pushed past Eridan and opened the door.
"Fuck!" A girl's voice sounded from inside.
"Roxy, wait!" Another voice followed the first.
"Goddamn, what happened to manners? They fly out the window?" Sollux sounded a lot more calm than he should.
"How many more are there?" The first voice stayed firm.
"Just one pissing himself outside the door." Sollux responded easily to the question. "Should he enter as well, or are you going to let him stew?"
A moment passed, then a girl opened the door. Keeping herself from making eye contact, she kept a knife pointed at him, nodding her head inside. Eridan walked in.
