Chapter 17
The strategy of getting out of town seemed to be working, they hadn't seen any infected. Dave wiped the blade of his katana on the side of the truck.
Rose shuffled though a bag that had been tied to the side. "Don't push your luck now Dave. You are only over the first hurdle with them."
"I can pay my fines to her later, but that must wait, I need to be a badass right now."
The truck pulled off the road and the engine shut off. Wheeling down the window Jade nodded torwards the road and put a finger to her lips. Rose tied the bag shut and lay in the truck bed. Dave tried to crouch lower than he already was. A car rumbled past them, then dissapeared.
Dave looked after it. "Wonder what they're going for."
"Unless it's a fight, they aren't going to get it. They're going straight to the city." Rose began untieing the bag again. "We need to keep going, leave them be."
Jade had unrolled the window and was hanging her arm out the window. "We should warn them, at least."
"They were driving a police crusier. They most likely have guns, flares, communication equipment, they are better off then we are. We need to worry about ourselves." Rose slipped another item into her clothes.
Jade sighed. "Okay. Lets just keep going."
The truck turned back on, and they returned to the road. After another hour of listening to the engine, they came across a gate. It was a large latch gate, and they could make out a farm past it, the lights faintly visible.
John yawned. "Should we go in?"
Jade blinked. "Not right now, it seems a little rude. What is it right now, midnight?" She bent over the radio to look at the clock.
Rose nodded. "Just because lights are on doesn't mean they're awake. They may not even know about the crisis."
"Then they need to be educated." Dave jumped out of the truck. "We could be like those religious people, "Excuse me sir, but have you heard about our death and killer, zombie shits?" He opened the gate, and got back into the truck. Jade sighed, and pulled forward.
At about 20 meters from the house, she shut of the truck and got out, followed by everyone else. They hesitated, then walked torward the house.
A gunshot rang out and Jade fell to the ground. John screamed and dove over her body. Rose grabbed the rifle and shot back, falling to the ground from recoil. Dave ran into the house. Running up the stairs, he gripped his sword. Throwing open the door, he was hit with metal and hit the ground hard, his sword flying from hia reach. Legs straddled him, and he looked up to a gun pointed in his face.
"You shot her, you sick fucks!" He twisted under her legs, and felt her grip losen.
Another voice spoke. "Shit, these guys aren't sick. Fuck, Kanaya, I just shot a person."
The woman got off Dave and ran downstairs. The boy that shot Jade stood over him. His eyes filled with tears. "I'm so sorry." He dropped his rifle and ran down the stairs. Dave picked up his sword and followed. His assailant had a medical bag with her and was kneeling at Jade's side with John staring her down and Rose pointing a rifle at her head.
"Let her work!" Dave yelled. John looked over and saw him. He stood up and ran back to the truck. Rose dropped the rifle to the dirt, and the woman opened the bag. Dave fell to his knees, and put his hands over his face.
Chapter 18
Roxy hadn't woken up yet. Assuming his clock was still correct, Dirk had said she'd been out for around 2 hours. It was becoming dark. Jake looked out onto the streets. Having the lights on drew infected to them, but hopefully not as much as before, now that they were being more quiet.
