The darkness swallowed me up and I couldn't see as I fell farther and farther down into the abyss. I kicked and flailed in a desperate attempt to grab some kind of surface. If I kept falling like this, I wouldn't be alive long enough to find the locket. It felt impossible that I would make it out alive. My hand brushed against something and, as I felt some more, my hand grazed what felt like a chain. My heart stopped. The necklace. I gripped it and pulled it towards me but, instead a bright light filled the hole.
I stared in astonishment as I noticed that I had just turned on a lamp that revealed more furniture around me. I gasped in fear and confusion. Where was I? What would happen when I reached the ground? What would happen to the furniture? What was happening? I shook my head and told myself to think. I gripped the edge of a nearby dresser and opened the door. Tossing clothes out, my hopes of finding something useful were depleted quickly. That was until I saw an umbrella. I pulled it out and ripped it open, immediately being slowed own. I floated down as objects shot past me, deeper into the hole. My breathing slowed and I relaxed. At least I wouldn't plummet to my death.
After a few minutes my feet greeted the ground and, to my surprise, there wasn't smashed furniture everywhere. I closed the umbrella and tossed it to the side. The room was full of color and it didn't seem to have a distinct pattern. I was about to walk forward towards a hallway when a click came from behind me. I turned and saw a small door slowly close and a white blur head in between my legs. I turned back around and saw a rabbit with a red coat. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This rabbit was dressed up. In clothes.
"Excuse me, but, I must not be late!" the little bunny exclaimed. I instantly thought of my little brother always rushing to places.
"Why are you in such a hurry?" I asked as he ran around me. He didn't answer but, instead, pulled out a gold pocket watch to check the time. My eyes went wide and my feet forced me to follow him. That watch looked just like grandpa's.
"Wait!" I yelled, chasing him. "Where did you get that watch?" I waved my arms to get his attention. He kept hopping, though, unaware of my yells.
"I'm late. I'm late. I'm late for a very important date!" he said in a sing-song voice. I continued to follow him down the hallway, asking questions along the way.
"What are you late for?" I tried to keep speed with the little fluffball but, for some reason, it seemed impossible. He kept hopping at a great speed.
"I mustn't be late or it'll be off with my head!" I stopped walking at how familiar that sounded.
"Who would make it be, uh, off with your head?" I asked, unsure of what words to use. I ran to catch up again and fell back into pace with him.
"Why, the Queen of course!" he stated.
"The Queen?" I questioned.
"The Queen of Hearts!" was the last thing out of the bunny's mouth that I heard. He slipped through a tiny door at the end of the hall, signaling the end of our conversation. I stared at the tiny door at the bottom and smacked my head against the wall. How was I supposed to fit through there? More importantly I needed to find my necklace. I turned around to retrace my steps to look for it when I was greeted with a different scenery.
It was a small room with a table and chairs set up neatly in the middle. I walked around it and examined the things on top of it. a bottle and a little box sat on the table and I was about to pick one up when a voice startled me. I flinched and knocked the bottle to the ground shattering it.
"Oh my, this won't do well with the Queen," said the voice. I looked around at for some source of it but, in my perspective, I was alone.
"Who are you? Are you talking about the, uh, Queen of Hearts?" I stuttered out. I didn't sound confident in any of my questions. It's not like someone does though.
"Excuse me? The Queen of He- Oh my! Yes. The Queen of Hearts. Is that who you are looking for?" I got down on the floor and stared wide-eyed at the small door. It had a face on the knob part and was talking. I reached forward and turned his nose, arising a shriek out of him.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't realize that was your nose," I tried to apologize but, the words just came out shaky. I was scared. Hopefully I was dreaming and this wasn't real.
"Now, you've broken the bottle and twisted my nose! How much more of the story are you planning on wrecking?" he scolded me and I couldn't help but feel puny, even though I was much larger than him.
"Wait, did you say story?" I leaned forward so my face was in front of his. Story? Like, a fairytale? He scoffed and then laughed in my face.
"What in the world are you talking about child?" he tried to brush off my question. What was this place and why did this seem familiar?
"You said I screwed up the story," I fought back. "Wait, is this," I started but, was rudely interrupted.
"Whatever is going through your head child is clearly insanity," the door knob said with a snarky attitude. "Now, if you want to get home you must find a way to drink whatever was in that shattered bottle," he tried to change the subject. I sat down and glared at his stuck up face. This was weird, no matter where I was.
"Actually, I don't want to get home just yet," I said matter-of-factly. "I need to find a locket my grandmother gave me. You see it fell down this hole and I jumped after it so-" he interrupted as he expanded his keyhole.
"Is it gold with a peculiar design on it?" he asked. I lowered my face again and looked through the hole to see a pudgy lady receiving my locket. She wore an ugly dress that matched her even uglier hairstyle.
"Yes! That's my locket! I need it back. Can you let me through the door?" I pleaded to him but he just stuck his nose in the air.
"Sorry, but, you're much too big," he spat. "Also, there is no way for you to get small again since you destroyed the bottle so, you're on your own." I stood up and made an angry and disgusted noise. I stomped my foot before kicking the wall and making more noises. I couldn't express my anger with how pretentious this guy was acting. I gripped my hair and tugged out of anger. I tried thinking of a solution, and the only one was to pinch myself and hope this was all a dream. I sat down on the floor with a thump and a grunt.
"Okay! Okay! I'll help you out! Ju- just stop making those noises!" he yelled. Was he scared of my little temper tantrum? "Just go through the door over there and it will take you to a forest. You've got to go through there, a fire, a mad party, a cat's insanity, and you'll make it to the garden of roses," he painted the instructions clearly. The wall moved and a door was revealed.
"Thank you!" I shouted as I stood up and walked through the door, towards the forest. This was my only chance and I had to take it. Even if door knobs can't talk.
