I couldn't answer Melinda. I looked at her as she waited for me to answer her question.
"I did what I was trained to do Melinda"
I turned on the car and drove off. The guys were probably still in there either dead by now or bleeding to death. She didn't ask any other questions. I drove her home in silent. There was nothing I could do. I know she was hurting, but I had to leave.
"Is it crazy that I thought you were the one? I mean it's just that I was so comfortable with you and so happy. I thought that I was lucky that I found somebody that I love at a young age. But, it was all just pretend to you" She turned to me with tears running down her face.
"You were too good to be true" she whispered. I hugged her tight as she cried in my chest.
""I was serious. Melinda I'm sorry. I'm sorry that we meet at the wrong time. I wish things were different" I told her. I know she was thinking that I was never serious about her, but I was. She pulled away and looked at me. She nodded and turned to walk away.
"Yea. Me too" she whispered. I looked at her as she wrapped her arms around herself. I went to hug her, but she shook her head no. I stopped and looked her.
" Melinda?" I called her name. She didn't bother to look at me. She looked down hiding her tears. I hate myself for this. I can tell she was waiting for me to leave.
I got in the car and seat back. I looked at her one more time and she looked at me. She wiped her tears and turned away. I felt like I was leaving a part of me behind.
