~~~~~~~~~Sonic: A Dream State~~~~~~~~~
"This is the most arduous, mind-numbing task I have ever done," I complain, glaring with exhaustion-glazed eyes at the English paper I'm trying to form a rough draft to. I know that I have to get the rough draft done by tomorrow, but even the thought of an 'F' can't motivate me to write another sentence. With a sigh, I close my laptop and lie back on my sleeping bag. I wonder if Shadow is already done with his paper... Probably. He seems that kind of type. On the other hand, I bet Rouge is planning on doing it tomorrow in math--we're allowed to do it on paper. Amy's probably freaking out and trying to make sure her draft has the perfect mixture of 'needs to be edited' and 'already perfect.' I can almost guarantee Knuckles is finding this thing as boring as I do, and is going to finish it in the morning. Julie-Su is likely going to be laboriously checking her work time and time again, and writing most of the night. Gah. School work sucks for the whole spectrum of people.
Yawning, I take a few moments to collect my thoughts, worried by the fact I have less than a half hour before Tail's bedtime. I'll have to type quietly so that I don't wake him, I decide, rolling out of my bag to take another stab at my assignment. It takes almost two hours, but I eventually deem my project good enough to turn in, and send it to my teacher. I didn't do much in the way of editing, but this is rough draft, so I'm not overly concerned. What I am concerned about is that it's almost midnight, and I only got a few hours of sleep last night. Crap. Good thing tomorrow's Friday. Just have to get through the school day...
By the next morning, I don't remember falling asleep. What I do remember is my dream, in all of its heart-wrenching glory.
I'm at school, having a wonderful lunch with my friends, and my mom and dad are serving the food. We're all laughing, but I don't know why. Suddenly, Shadow comes running into the room, which seems smaller than it should be.
"Sonic, I have to talk to you!" Shadow cries, and I gasp as I see tears in his eyes. Rushing to his side, I wrap my arms around him. Shadow buries his face in my chest, and I start worrying that everyone else will pick up on my feelings for him. Dad in particular is staring, and when he speaks, it's with an edge in his voice.
"So you're the object of Sonic's affection. You're the one who has stolen my son away every day for the last two years." My blood runs cold, and Shadow stops crying to glare at my dad. Mom is gasping, her hands covering her mouth and her heart. My friends' faces show their shock, and I grip Shadow tightly.
"Yes. What of it?" Shadow snarls, and my dad's face becomes livid with anger.
"He does not have the time to be with you! Sonic needs to take care of his brother, Tails!" My father thunders, and I feel such guilt at this statement that I'm nearly incapacitated. I open my mouth to speak, but I've forgotten how to form words.
"You think I don't know that?!" Shadow screams back, and I try to jump between him and my dad. However, my body is frozen with shock, and I can do no more than watch as my world is torn apart. "I came to tell him that he's going to have to choose!" My heart is beating unbelievably loudly, and I can only try to wrap my mind around the fact that my quiet, grounded boyfriend has become the raging teenager who is shouting at my dad.
"That's one thing we agree on!" Dad barks, and both him and Shadow turn their angry eyes on me. "It's time to choose, Sonic. You've played both sides for far too long." Anguish grips me; I can't imagine having to make a choice like this. "Your mother and I raised you!" Dad exclaims when I don't answer. "You're our son! Don't let this monster steal you away!"
