The rest of the lunch was rather uneventful after the little bet. Alex, obviously, boasted about his desirable body and continued to point out how wrong I was. I rolled my eyes and pretended I still stood by the lie of being immune to him.
“Well I guess we better hit the road again.” Mads announced once all our plates had been cleared away by another drooling barmaid. “Nice meeting you, Alex.” The three of us rose from our seats and moved to the car park.
“Pleasure was all mine, Mads.” Alex seemed almost kind. Mads proceeded me to the car with the intention of leaving the fireman and I alone, I was sure. I mumbled a quick goodbye and attempted to walk passed without any awkwardness between us. A strong hand gripped my arm and spun me around to face him again. “That’s the only farewell I’m gonna get?” He raised a sexy eyebrow and waited for my reply. I didn’t give him the satisfaction and only nodded as my response. He pulled me in closer and I could feel his hot breath against my sensitive ear. “Be careful, Kay.”
“What?”
“I don’t want you to get hurt again.” He pulled back to look me in the eyes. I allowed myself a brief moment of insanity when I pushed up from my shorter stance and brushed a kiss on his cheek.
“Goodbye Alex.” I disappeared into the car before he could stop me again and ask why the hell I did that. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know why I did that.
“You alright, Kay?” Mads asked as I clicked myself in and focused on the highway and away from a certain man.
“Oh, great, ready for some more driving.”
“He was a nice guy.” The comment caught me off guard and caused me to almost gasp. “You say you didn’t like him, Kay but you know you two had chemistry.”
“How the hell am I meant to react when I have chemistry with a guy I just met and I am on a manhunt for my ex?”
“So you do admit you had chemistry?” my best friend smiled. “Good to see you can identify the spark. There was just something about you guys, the heat was…almost suffocating.”
“Oh please, you are exaggerating!”
“Am I? Am I really?” I turned my attention back to the road, allowing the flow of cars and neighbouring trees to take my mind off things. I really needed to get my emotions and apparently my hormones in check. I felt myself sigh at the realisation that I would never see Alex again. All that ‘sexual tension’ as Mads would put it was gone for good. We were on two different paths and just happened to cross for lunch. A part of me was surprisingly disappointed at that fact too. I just had to get over it though. I was on a mission to bring my unfaithful ex-fiancé to justice and nothing was going to get in the way.
We decided to stop for the night in a hotel complete with pool and air-conditioning. Thankfully Mads and I had packed light so it was fairly easy to carry everything up the stairs as the lift was unavailable due to unknown circumstances. Mads had announced she was stuffed from driving and was hitting the sack early. Unfortunately, for me, I couldn’t sleep. I had too much thinking going on in my head. I resolved to take a walk to try and clear my head. I scribbled a note to Mads in case she woke up and freaked out that I was gone. She was the kind of person that worried a little too easily sometimes. Stealthily moving down the stairs and through the hallways I reached the outdoor area leading to the pool. I glanced at my watch and wasn’t shocked to see it was midnight already. The night air was fairly still and held no comfort. Without noticing I had reached the pool and was thankful to find it completely deserted. I didn’t need to explain myself for being there at this time of night. A thrilling thought entered my mind at that point. The pool looked extremely inviting but I had left my swimmers in the room and didn’t particularly want to go back and get them.
“Just do it, Kay.” I said out loud as I carefully peeled off my clothes and kicked them away from the edge. I was now down to my underwear and bra. I grinned broadly as I dived soundlessly into the water. Its coldness was like ice but refreshing and calming at the same time. I swam a few laps to try and warm myself up a little bit.
“Do you always go swimming at midnight in your underwear?” a familiar voice behind me made me freeze in my tracks. I shifted to face Alex and almost cringed. Here I was being adventurous for one of the first times in my life and he had to come and ruin the moment. “The water that cold huh?” I followed his eyes to my chest and squeaked with embarrassment. Crossing my arms tightly over my breasts I frowned at him.
“What do you want Alex?” Before he replied he jumped in the pool, only dressed in a pair of black boxers. He bubbled up to the surface only a few centimetres from me. I backed away from him as he continued to move closer. I cursed in my head as I hit the pool’s edge. There was no more room for escape. “What are you doing?”
“I was just seeing how perky you were…up close.” He rested a hand against the edge beside me and smirked. I held myself tighter under his piercing gaze.
“Is this you trying to hit on me?”
“And what if it was?”
“Get your hands away from me, perv.” I whispered forcefully as I shifted to towards the free side of his human cage.
“Oh, you wanna play like that, do you?” He clasped his other hand down to ensure all my escape routes were diminished. I stared at him hard and waited for his next move. Water tickled down his strong jaw and returned to the pool in small ripples. He looked amazing and he knew it. That smug smile of his making him look just as God-like as he had from the pub.
“So are we just going to stand here for a while?”
“Well I’m quite enjoying my view, how about you?”
“I am older than you, you know.”
“What does age have to do with lust?”
“Excuse me?”
“I know you feel it too. There’s been this tension between us since I saved you from that drunk guy. You can’t fight it any more than I can.” He pointed out.
“I’m not looking for lust in my life.” I counted slowly remembering my actual reason for being in this situation right now. “I think it would be best if you went off and found some young staff member to screw.”
“You really think that little of me, don’t you?”
“I know what lust does to a person and I don’t want anything to do with it.”
“You mean that kiss as a farewell was nothing?”
“I mean, it is nothing now.”
“So it was something then?”
